1 Introduction Badmaev - Arthritis General Description This has been used as a useful antiarthritic formula as well as in the inflammatory conditions of soft tissue and muscles (fibromyalgia). This formula has been used not only to alleviate the symptoms of the disease, but primarily to stabilize the disease process. It has herbs and minerals with anti-inflammatory action (e.g. phenolic compounds, boswellic acids, salicylic compounds,) and pain relieving action (e.g. azulenes, gallotannins). In addition it contains herbs and minerals which normalize the lymph and blood circulation in the affected joint and the soft tissues (e.g. aloe wood, boswellia). The latter mechanism has traditionally been referred to as augmenting the local defense system, and it has been credited for stabilizing the progression of arthritis, particularly rheumatoid arthritis. The described augmenting mechanism restores local homeostasis, provides better nutrition to the tissues, and ultimately prevents the breakdown of the tissue components forming joint, therefore, preventing a major cause of joint disfigurement and limited mobility. One of the important ingredients of this formula is Lactobacillus sporogenes in the dose of 100 million spores per tablet. Lactobacillus sporogenes was first described by the Russian scientists in the 1930 s as an aerobic, heat resistant, spore-forming bacteria producing the beneficial L (+) lactic acid. Lactobacillus sporogenes proliferates within the gastrointestinal tract and produces lactic acid. The lactic acid lowers the ph and prevents the growth of harmful bacteria such as Salmonella and E. Coli. Furthermore, it is well recognized that many chronic inflammatory conditions, like rheumatoid arthritis, have profoundly altered gastrointestinal flora. This alteration leads to inflammation, injury of the gastrointestinal mucosa and leakage of the septic content of the gut into the blood stream. This mechanism nicknamed, leaky gut syndrom, is held responsible for the chronic inflammatory conditions including arthritis. Thus Lactobacillus sporogenes administration, is helpful in restoring the normal balance in the intestinal flora and alleviating the course of arthritis. The other important component of this formula is the mineral zinc in the traditional form of zinc bashma. Zinc bashma provides a bioavailable mineral which effectively prevents the free radical damage to the tissues involved in the inflammatory process. Administration of zinc bashma is particularly important since zinc is not readily available from food due to its interaction with chelating substances such as phytic acid, oxalic acid and fibers present in food and medicinal plants.
