ADHD Thursdays 5 & 19 October, 2 & 16 November 2017 Halfway Houses Primary School, Danley Road, Sheerness, Kent, ME12 3AP or Fridays 6 & 20 October, 3 & 17 November 2017 MIDAS Centre at Meadowfield School, Swanstree Avenue, Sittingbourne, Kent, ME10 4NL 09:30 12:00 A four-part workshop about Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity (ADHD) for parents and carers of children and young people with a diagnosis or a noticeable difficulty. In this four-part workshop we will: Explore the causes and effects of ADHD and address some of the many misconceptions and myths surrounding this contentious label Consider the role and implications of medications Consider strategies and interventions to support learning and social development Explore positive approaches to behaviour management including sanctions and rewards Consider what good practice looks like for children with ADHD in the home and in the community The content of the workshops will be the same at both locations; parents should choose the location that is most convenient for them. Numbers are limited and therefore places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. One parent or carer must commit to attending all four workshops. Another parent or carer (or member of staff from the child s school) is welcome to join any or all of the above. 4 Sleep Easy Thursday 23 November 2017 MIDAS Centre at Meadowfield School, Swanstree Avenue, Sittingbourne, Kent, ME10 4NL 09:30 11:30 or Thursday 23 November 2017 Halfway Houses Primary School, Danley Road, Sheerness, Kent, ME12 3AP 12:30 14:30 Sleep problems can be a persistent and severe problem for children and young people with learning disabilities. Improved sleep can lead to reduced stress within the family and improved educational outcomes for the young person. In this workshop we will: Introduce participants to a range of sleep problems in children and young people with additional support needs Identify possible causes of sleep difficulties Consider behavioural interventions to improve them Provide an opportunity to share ideas with parents and carers facing similar challenges Presented by Katie Skinner, Pupil Wellbeing Manager and Specialist Teacher, Meadowfield Sleep Scotland Sleep Counsellor This workshop is free to attend 4

Participants will gain an understanding of Autism and the strategies and interventions to support children and young people who have a diagnosis of ASD. 7 Emotional Regulation Thursday 19 April 2018 MIDAS Centre at Meadowfield School, Swanstree Avenue, Sittingbourne, Kent, ME10 4NL 09:30 11:30 Or Thursday 19 April 2018 Halfway Houses Primary School, Danley Road, Sheerness, Kent, ME12 3AP 12:30 14:30 Emotional regulation can be difficult for some children to learn, but is an important skill for life. In this workshop we will focus on developing an understanding of why some children struggle to recognise, regulate and understand their own emotions and behaviours. Participants will be introduced to the 5 Point Scale and consider how it can be used at home, at school and in the community. In this workshop we will: Discuss some of the reasons why children can struggle to recognise, regulate and understand their emotions Consider how we can support and teach emotional regulation Consider how a 5 point scale works in practice and how it can help children to learn to identify, regulate and de-escalate their own behaviours and emotions in challenging situations Presented by Katie Skinner, Pupil Wellbeing Manager and Specialist Teacher, Meadowfield This workshop is free to attend 7

For those who experience the frustration of not being able to communicate effectively, Makaton can really help. This workshop provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme. In this workshop we will: Learn a small core vocabulary of everyday signs that are relevant for children and young people with additional needs Consider hints and tips for effective signing in school and at home Presented by Becky Kenny & Sophie Cartwright, Specialist Teachers, Meadowfield, Makaton Regional Tutors This workshop is free to attend 8

9 Siblings and Friendship Thursday 12 July 2018 MIDAS Centre at Meadowfield School, Swanstree Avenue, Sittingbourne, Kent, ME10 4NL 09:30 11:30 or Thursday 12 July 2018 Halfway Houses Primary School, Danley Road, Sheerness, Kent, ME12 3AP 12:30 14:30 Having a child with an additional need can cause strain and difficulties for some families. Often parents worry about the impact of their child s need on their siblings and other family members. As well as providing an opportunity to discuss worries and difficulties with other parents and carers and to share ideas and tips about maintaining successful family life, in this session we will: Consider strategies to foster positive family relationships Discuss the support available to siblings and families in the local community Look at the impact of social communication difficulties on family life and strategies that can support this Presented by Katie Skinner, Pupil Wellbeing Manager and Specialist Teacher, Meadowfield This workshop is free to attend 9

10 Success on the Spectrum Following advice and feedback from parents and carers we have developed an exciting new support programme. This programme is designed for parents and carers of children and young people aged 7-18 with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This programme is designed to:- Increase understanding of ASD conditions and their impact Develop an awareness of potential sensory sensitivities and their impact on everyday life Consider brain development and its impact Support parents and carers to use and understand strategies they can use to support children and young people Support the development of healthy relationships Create an opportunity for participants to meet with other parents and carers and share experiences This programme will run on the dates below, from 9.30am 12.00pm at The MIDAS Centre, Meadowfield School, Swanstree Avenue, Sittingbourne, Kent, ME10 4NL:- Thursday 11 January 2018 Thursday 18 January 2018 Thursday 25 January 2018 Thursday 1 February 2018 Thursday 8 February 2018 Numbers are limited and therefore places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. One parent or carer must commit to attending all 5 sessions. Another parent or carer (or member of staff from the child s school) is welcome to join any or all of the above.
