4 UNDERSTANDING DYSLEXIA Monday 16 th January :30-12:00 In this workshop parents and carers will be: Given an opportunity to understand some of the difficulties that children and young people with dyslexic type difficulties can experience Introduced to some of the approaches that can be used to help This workshop is suitable for parents of pupils in mainstream schools with dyslexic type difficulties. 5 MAKATON Tuesday 17 th January :30-11:45 Aim: This introductory workshop provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme. Over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton symbols and signs, either as their main method of communication or as a way to support speech. Workshop Content: This workshop includes hints and tips for effective signing in school and at home. Participants will learn a small core vocabulary of everyday signs that are relevant for children. 6 EXPLORING STRATEGIES FOR CHILDREN WITH SPEECH & LANGUAGE DIFFICULTIES IN EARLY YEARS Tuesday 31 st January :30-11:30 In this workshop parents, carers and professionals will be: Provided with the opportunity to share experiences and difficulties that young children with speech & language difficulties experience at home and in Early Years settings Introduced to a range of strategies to support the development of speech & language difficulties skills in young children Encouraged to consider how to use rewards to motivate and engage young children Signposted where to go for help and consider how to make best use of the services available Given the opportunity to meet other parents and carers facing similar challenges and share ideas This workshop is intended for parents to attend with a professional from the Early Years Setting that their child attends. 7 EXPLORING THE USE OF ipads AND APPS Tuesday 7 th February :00 15:00 Children and young people with SEN can sometimes be particularly engaged and attracted to ipads and apps. In this session parents and carers will be: Introduced to some useful settings and tools to support use Given the opportunity to explore a range of free and purchased apps looking at how these can be used creatively Able to meet other parents and carers to share ideas and experiences This workshop is suitable for parents of SEND children with an interest in ipads and technology. 8 STARTING THE AUTISM JOURNEY Tuesday 21 st February :30 12:30 Workshop Objectives: A supportive and informative introductory session for parents going through the process of a diagnosis for their child or for parents whose child has been recently diagnosed. To gain greater understanding of Autism and the Autism Spectrum and what this might mean for you and your child. To identify your child s strengths and difficulties; becoming an expert on your child To provide some useful strategies to support your child s needs To support you as a parent on the start of this journey Workshop Content: What is Autism/ASD? 9 UNDERSTANDING & MANAGING ON-LINE SAFETY Wednesday 8 th March :00 15:00 In this workshop parent/carers will be: Introduced to on-line safety and the vulnerability of children with SEND. Offer some practical ideas and suggestions for ways to manage on-line risks. Sign post ID to tools to help keep children safe. 10 BASICS FOR BEHAVIOUR Monday 24 th April Workshop Objectives: This workshop will give parents of children at a mainstream primary school the opportunity to: Reflect on their own practice in relation to positive behaviour management at home Explore interventions that can be used within the home to promote positive behaviour. 11 OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANCE DISORDER (ODD) Monday 15 th May :15 14:25 Workshop Objectives: In this workshop parents and carers will be: Introduced to Oppositional Defiance Disorder Explore interventions and ideas for managing within the home This workshop is suitable for parents whose child has been diagnosed with Oppositional Defiance Disorder. 12 AUGMENTATIVE & ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION WHAT IS IT? Thursday 18 th May :00-15:00 In this workshop parents and carers will be: Introduced to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Shown a range of low and lite tech AAC resources and ideas Encouraged and inspired to look at ways of using AAC with their child/children Able to meet other parents and carers and share ideas This workshop is suitable for parents of children who experience difficulties with their communication. 13 SURVIVING THE SUPERMARKET Monday 22 nd May :30-12:00 Children and young people with SEN can find certain events tricky and distressing. Going shopping, preparing for school, going to bed, going on holiday, having visitors in the house and going to other people s houses are often times of anxiety and stress for the whole family. This session provides an opportunity to share concerns and consider practical strategies that may be helpful. Problem solving approaches that enable us to have a positive focus, are often easier when we work alongside others who have experienced similar situations. 14 ASD & SENSORY INFORMATION Thursday 25 th May :00-15:00 In this workshop parents and carers will be: Introduced to sensory integration difficulties and how these impact on some individuals with ASD Presented with some successful ways to help support individuals experiencing sensory integration difficulties Shown ideas for introducing simple sensory diets Encouraged to meet other parents and carers and share experiences and ideas This workshop is suitable for parents of children with ASD who experience sensory integration difficulties. 16 EXPLORING SOCIAL COMMUNICATION DIFFICULTIES & MAKING VISUAL RESOURCES Tuesday 4 th July :30-14:45 In this workshop parents and carers will be: Exploring what we mean by communication and a chance to get to grips with some common speech and language terms Exploring different special educational needs e.g. Autism/Down Syndrome and the benefit of using visuals Introduced to a range of strategies and resources that can be used within the home environment Given the opportunity to create some personalised visual resources to take away This workshop is suitable for parents of children who experience difficulties with their communication. Bookings & payment need to be received at least two weeks in advance 16
17 CANCELLATION CHARGES Workshop Cancellation Charges Most of our parent workshops are free to parents and carers. We do respectfully request that cancellations are made with more than 48hrs notice so that staff can be notified. Where charges apply these are to cover costs to Ifield SMILE, such as providing external presenters, lunch and/or resources. There will be no charge for cancellations made with more than 48hrs notice. Please note that non-attendance or cancellations made within less than 48hrs notice will be charged the full amount. 17

19 ASD PARENTS SUPPORT GROUP Ifield SMILE hosts a support group for the parents, carers and families of any child or young person with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Asperger's Syndrome/Social Communication Difficulties. You do not have to be a parent or carer of a child or young person attending Ifield School. This will be an opportunity to share your experiences, challenges and successes with others and to support and learn from other parents' expertise and experience. Support group sessions, 09:30 11:45am on the following dates: 4 th October th November th January st March th May th July 2017 Guest speakers will be invited according to the needs of the group. Facilitated by Claudia Goodman Gravesham Specialist Teaching & Learning Service This support group is free to attend, if you wish to attend any meeting, you will need to book in advance.
