2 Bereavement in the school community Professional development A death, or life-limiting illness - be it of a parent, a pupil or a member of the school staff - can have a significant impact on the whole school community. Current educational guidance recognises that schools have a vital role to play in promoting emotional health and wellbeing, safety, and community cohesion, and we know from the children and young people we have supported at Child Bereavement UK over the last 22 years, that the way the school manages can have a significant impact on their long-term outcomes. With the right help and support, most bereaved pupils will not need professional help; what they do need is the understanding of familiar and trusted adults. Schools are well placed to provide this support and with some training and guidance, your school s ability to do so will be greatly enhanced. This booklet highlights some of the training, support and resources Child Bereavement UK offers to help give your school s staff the skills and confidence they need to offer appropriate support to children and young people in their care. 3 Training workshops Training workshops In recognition of the important role schools can play in improving outcomes for bereaved children and young people, our experienced facilitators offer a range of training workshops specifically designed to help those working in the education sector. Our workshops aim to improve understanding of and to provide guidance on how best to support bereaved pupils. Our workshops are run throughout the year across the UK.
