Understanding the mechanisms of interaction between Electromagnetic energy generation, consumption, and exposure and organic life A presentation at the Royal Society, 27 November 2007 by Roger Coghill MA (Cantab, C Biol MI Biol MA(Environ Mgt) Coghill Research Laboratories, Lower Race, Pontypool, Gwent, NP4 5UH
Coghill Research Laboratories Founded in 1981 (over a quarter century ago!) Situated on a 5 acre Pontypool site for 17 years Specialises in bioelectromagnetics: Fully equipped and staffed by graduate chemists, physicists, biologists and IT professionals Carries out cellular and epidemiological studies Maintains a large database of scientific papers and journals relevant to the field Publishes peer reviewed papers, books and CDs Manages European Biology and Bioelectromagnetics (a fully peer reviewed journal)
Scope of the talk Planetary/global influences Extremely low frequency (ELF) mechanisms RF/MW bioeffective mechanisms
Part One: Planetary/global influences 1. Schumann Resonances ( SR ) 2. Ozone depletion (the UV problem) 3. Global warming (the IR problem)
1. Schumann Resonances ( SR ) Oscillations in the cavity between the ionosphere and the earth s surface caused by magnetic storms arising from sunspot influences. First discovered by Nikola Tesla in 1905 and defined by Schumann in 1952 at the mean frequency of 7.83 Hz. A relationship between sunspot density and influenza pandemics has been established by at least three separate studies (Hope Simpson, 1978, Hoyle and Wickramasinghe, 1990: Lyons and Murphy, 1990).
The sunspot cycle and influenza pandemics Source: Hoyle and Chandrasinghe, 2000
La influenza: the influence We were able to verify the appearance of influenza in [Sardinian] shepherds who were living a long time alone in solitary open country far from any inhabited centre. This occurred at just the same time as influenza appeared in the nearest inhabited centres. (Magrassi, 1949)
The SR signals and human health The SR signals are actually observed by experiment to emerge at several frequencies related to brain waves. They range between 6 and 50 cycles per second, with daily variation of about ±0.5 Hz. The strongest of the seven resonances is 7.83 Hz, in the alpha brainwave range. If the rise in resonance continues, this primary resonance, the Earth pulse, changes from sub band low alpha (7 10 Hz) to subband high alpha (10 12 Hz), perhaps influencing our ability to relax deeply, balance and integrate our mind/body connection. It could influence REM sleep and dreaming. If it continues to rise, it will breach the threshold into "fast" beta activity. Low beta (12 15 Hz) is associated with lack of focused attention, and can even indicate attention deficit disorder.
Perturbing the SR signal Removal of this signal has been associated with serious ill health among astronauts, so NASA now includes an SR signal in spacecraft. The physical condition of early Astronauts deteriorated severely whilst in Outer Space, away from the Schumann Resonance. The problem was solved by introducing the "Schumann Simulator" into all space shuttles, a magnetic pulse generator mimicking the Earth's frequency. This demonstrates the simple fact that we cannot be healthy if disconnected from the "natural biological frequency. (Ludwig, cited in Life Technology CD) For review of health effects see N.J. Cherry, Schumann Resonances, a plausible biophysical mechanism for the human health effects of Solar/Geomagnetic Activity. Nat. Hazards 26 (2002), pp
EMFs also perturb the SR signal As the pineal gland is affected by changes in the Earth's magnetic field, so is our hormone production. In particular, melatonin, an important neurohormone and oncostatic (cancer suppressing) agent, is not produced in the absence of the Schumann Resonance in outer space and its production is throttled in the presence of electromagnetic pollution. Many studies confirm adverse effects on melatonin synthesis when the SR signal is altered in intensity and frequency (see Weydahl et al., 2001 for review)
Schumann Resonances and global temperature The amplitude (i.e., intensity) of the Schumann's resonances is not constant, and appears to be extremely dependent upon tropical (and hence global) temperature. Indeed, preliminary results seem to indicate that a mere one degree increase in temperature correlates with a doubling of the SR. Hence global warming could also increase the SR signal frequency with adverse health consequences.
Schumann resonances and EMFs The late Neil Cherry in 2003 reported a study of sunspots and human health in Thailand*, which has a quiet EMF environment, showing that the overall death r ate correlated with sunspot intensity. Other studies have correlated increased sunspot intensity (GMA) with lowered melatonin levels (Bardasano et al 1989, Burch et al., 1997). * Natural Hazards 29: 1 11, 2003
The SR signal and brain rhythms One vital role of the SR signal is in synchronising the circadian and ELF brain rhythms. The late Lewis B. Hainsworth first recognised the relationship of brain wave frequencies to the SR signal, imparted this awareness to Robert O. Becker, and to Harvard neurologists as early as (see Nexus Magazine, 10(3): April May 2003) Note: the 50/60Hz fields in homes expose residents to over a million times higher than the SR signal strength.
SR signal health effects Cherry (2002) reported significant correlation between high sunspot numbers and Suicide Cardiovascular stroke Cancer (leukaemia, breast cancer) Other studies report a correlation between GMA and multiple sclerosis (Gerasimov, 2003). Note: all these conditions are associated with lowered melatonin levels (e.g. Sandyk and Awerbuch, 1994)
