2 Welcome to Wuerzburg The romantic Court Gardens of the Residence The lively university and congress city of Wuerzburg, gateway to the Romantic Road, is dominated by its most prominent landmark, the Fortress Marienberg. Since the foundation of the Wuerzburg bishopric in 742, Wuerzburg has been the religious centre of the region. From 1719 to 1744 Balthasar Neumann built the "palace of palaces," the Wuerzburg Residence, for the art-loving prince-bishops of the Schoenborn family. The Venetian artist Tiepolo painted the vast fresco on the ceiling above the famous staircase, one of the largest paintings in the world. Since 1982 the Residence is listed as an UNESCO World Heritage. 2 / 10

This seminar will provide an overview of the programmes and activities of national and international networks in radiation medicine and of the current knowledge in radiation medicine research and radiation emergency preparedness. The topics presented will range from preventive measures, dosimetry, databases, and nuclear terrorism to acute radiation syndrome and late effects of acute radiation. The seminar aims at education and advanced training, but may as well serve as a basis for international scientific exchange and discussion of experience and knowledge in the field of radiation medicine.
