3 WHAT IS CANCER? Abnormal cells that divide and grow in an uncontrolled way are known as cancer. If they multiply too much they can cause a growth known as a tumour. Some cancers may also spread from the original body tissue in which they started to other areas of the body creating a secondary tumour; a process known as metastasis. You may also hear the words malignant and benign used to describe tumours. BENIGN TUMOURS A benign tumour is a non-cancerous growth that does not spread to other parts of the body. They can still be serious but are often easier to treat. ABNORMAL CELLS MALIGNANT TUMOURS Malignant tumours are cancerous and have the potential to spread to other parts of the body and may therefore also be referred to as invasive cancer. Not all cancer is life threatening, especially those described as cancer in situ, non-invasive, low grade or pre-malignant. These are cancers at a very early stage which have not spread to other parts of the body ABNORMAL CELLS

Our comprehensive cancer cover comes as standard with all new policies and covers you for the most serious cancers as well as a large number of less severe cancers. FULL PAYMENT OF YOUR COVER Our main cancer definition pays out the full amount of cover. It covers you if you are diagnosed with a cancer described as a malignant tumour and it has spread to other tissue in the body. ADDITIONAL PAYMENTS OF UP TO 25,000 If a cancer does not meet the severity required to pay the full amount of cover it may still be covered by the additional payments under our Protect plan. These pay up to a maximum of 25,000 each, or 25% of your cover if lower, without reducing the full amount of your cover. They cover specific cancers such as: low grade prostate and testicular cancer ovarian tumours early forms of skin cancer cancers in situ of the bladder and larynx It also covers any cancer in situ that requires surgery to remove it no matter where it is in the body. CHILDREN S COVER You also have the peace of mind that children are automatically covered for cancer from birth until the age of 22. Although money will never take away the worry of your child being unwell, it can help with the financial pressures such as taking unpaid time off work to look after your child, or the additional travel and hospital parking costs. THERE FOR YOU Our There for You service can provide the kind of support that you may not get as part of your treatment by connecting you with a RedArc specialist nurse adviser. They have the time to listen when you need some support and the knowledge to answer your questions and help you prepare for what lies ahead. You will receive one-on-one ongoing support with the same nurse adviser for as long as required. The RedArc nurse adviser can also help you get the most of other support services and charities as well as arranging any appropriate face to face therapy or counselling. A diagnosis of cancer can have a huge effect on your immediate family too, so if they need some support, your nurse adviser can help them too. ADDITIONAL CARE BENEFIT Our Additional Care Benefit can give you an additional financial boost if an illness leaves you with permanent physical symptoms. The benefit provides 50,000, or an amount equal to your cover if lower and could be used to cover the cost of professional care, alterations to your home or to help cover lost income.
