There s lots we can do ourselves to help prevent heart disease, but cardiovascular (heart and circulatory) disease is still one of the UK s biggest health threats. You ll want to be reassured that should you be affected by cardiovascular disease you already have the right cover and the necessary support in place to help you get through it. 3 WHAT IS CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE? Cardiovascular disease is the collective name for diseases that affect the heart and the circulatory system. These include familiar conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), heart attack and cardiac arrest. HEART ATTACK, CARDIAC ARREST OR HEART FAILURE? These are conditions which are often confused, but are quite different. Heart attack: this is when the blood flowing to the heart becomes restricted and as a result a portion of the heart muscle dies. It s often accompanied by chest pain, although not always. The heart can continue to pump even though it is damaged. Cardiac arrest: when the heart stops completely and blood is not pumped to the rest of the body, which can lead to unconsciousness. The heart itself is not damaged. Cardiac arrest can be caused by an irregular or fast heartbeat. Heart failure: your heart still beats but it can no longer pump blood around the body effectively because it has become too weak or too stiff. This can lead to breathlessness, fatigue and swollen legs. It can t be cured but it can be improved by lifestyle changes and a number of different treatments. THE AORTA AND ARTERIES A lot of the conditions we cover are for blocked or damaged arteries. Arteries are part of the body s circulatory system and carry oxygen rich blood around the body. The aorta is the biggest artery in the body and runs directly from the heart down the body. Arteries can become blocked with fatty deposits (cholesterol), or get weakened and enlarged (an aneurysm), or stiffen and become too narrow.

5 WHY PROTECT FROM OLD MUTUAL WEALTH? That s why our comprehensive cover comes as standard with all new policies and you and your children are covered for the most serious heart conditions as well as a number of less severe conditions. FULL PAYMENT OF YOUR COVER We pay out the full amount of cover for 12 different conditions related to the heart and circulation. A heart attack is probably the most familiar condition, and the one people worry about the most, which is why we keep things simple: we pay out for any heart attack, whatever the severity. The other 11 cardiovascular conditions we cover are: Aorta graft surgery replacing a damaged main artery Cardiac arrest when the heart stops Cardiomyopathy a disorder of the heart muscle Coronary artery bypass grafts heart bypass surgery Heart failure when the heart cannot pump blood effectively Heart transplant Heart valve replacement or repair Peripheral vascular disease blocked arteries in the legs Primary pulmonary arterial hypertension a narrowing of the arteries in the lungs causing high blood pressure Pulmonary artery graft surgery surgery to replace the artery from the heart to the lungs Structural heart surgery surgery to correct a defect in the structure of the heart. ADDITIONAL PAYMENTS OF UP TO 25,000 For those heart related conditions which are more easily managed and have less of an impact on your life, we pay up to a maximum of 25,000 each, or 25% of your cover if lower, without reducing the full amount of your cover. These are: Aaortic aneurysm a bulge in the aorta Coronary angioplasty treatment to unblock arteries Heartbeat abnormalities treated with a pacemaker You can find the full details of what s covered in our Guide to the illnesses covered. CHILDREN S COVER You also have the peace of mind that your children are automatically covered for the same wide range of heart conditions as adults. COVER FOR CONGENITAL HEART CONDITIONS We cover your children for some congenital heart conditions (conditions that develop before a baby is born) if: they develop after the cover starts, or they develop before the cover starts, but you are not aware of the condition when you take out the cover. Common congenital conditions such as problems with heart valves and holes in the heart, which require surgery to treat them, are covered and the money can be paid to you before the surgery takes place to give you the option of paying for private treatment. Although money will never take away the worry of your child being unwell, it can help with the financial pressures such as having to take unpaid time off work to look after your child, or the additional travel and hospital parking costs. 6 EXTRA SUPPORT Our Protect critical illness policy includes a range of additional benefits as standard and at no additional cost. Two in particular could help if you are diagnosed with heart condition. THERE FOR YOU Our There for You service can provide the kind of support that you may not get as part of your treatment, by connecting you with a RedArc specialist nurse adviser. They have the time to listen when you need some support and have the knowledge to answer your questions and help you prepare for what lies ahead. You will receive one-on-one ongoing support with the same nurse adviser for as long as required. The RedArc nurse adviser can also help you: arrange any appropriate therapy or counselling get the most out of other support services and charities create a Get well, stay well plan to get you back on track The diagnosis of a heart condition can affect your immediate family too, so if they need some support, your nurse adviser can help them too. ADDITIONAL CARE BENEFIT Our Additional Care Benefit can give you an additional financial boost if an illness, such as heart failure, leaves you with permanent physical symptoms. It pays 50,000 or an amount equal to your cover if lower and could be used to cover the cost of professional care, alterations to your home or to help cover lost income.
