1 ALIMENTARY SYSTEM MODULE Academic Year Study Guide
2 Alimentary System Objectives By the end of this system, students should recognize the followings: 1. The histological structure of the three major categories forming the digestive system. The structure of human tongue, lips, salivary glands, larynex, esophagus, small intestine, large intestine, liver & exocrine and endocrine glands of the pancreas. 2. The structures of the anterior abdominal wall and the areas of the abdomen and the position of the organs in relation to each one. The surface anatomy of the different organs including stomach, duodenum, liver, spleen, kidneys ureters, and large intestine as well as the surface anatomy of the blood vessels. The aorta and its branches and the inferior vena cava. 3. The digestion and absorption of the gastrointestinal tract and understanding the overall functions of the gastrointestinal system and list the principal digestive enzymes, their precursors, their substrates and the products of the action of the enzymes. Also regulation of gastrointestinal function concerning the operation of the gastrointestinal tract and its associated glands in addition of the structure and innervation of the gastrointestinal tract. 4. The different types of inflammations and tumors affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Inflammations and tumors of the salivary glands, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. Also bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract, inflammatory and neoplastic diseases affecting the liver, gall bladder, pancreas and peritoneum. 5. Common liver function tests and biochemical changes in liver diseases. The diagnosis of different liver disease & how to follow up patient with a liver disease. 6. Drugs used to treat three common medical conditions involving the gastrointestinal tract; peptic ulcers, diarrhea and constipation..the indication, adverse effects as well as contraindication pattern of each drug.
