Basic cosmetic functions like hydrating, conditioning, masking and others are combined with an excellent antimicrobial profile. dermosoft products will meet many of your requirements for the improvement of cosmetic formulations and along the way protect the product against microorganisms. With the aid of dermosoft cosmetic products can easily be formulated without traditional preservatives. The product consists of a single active ingredient, Glyceryl Caprylate, which is produced using only plant materials. Glyceryl monoesters have long ago been recognized as versatile antimicrobially active additives 1,2. Glyceryl caprylate has moisturizing and refatting properties. This will help to improve and maintain the moisture and balanced environment of the skin. Furthermore it can help to combat skin impurities thanks to its strong activity against Propionibacterium acnes. Due to its surface activity, it can be used as a co-emulsifier in interesting product concepts like PEG-free oil baths. And finally, in combination with other dermosoft types, the strong antimicrobial activity of can convert most cosmetic formulations in self preserving products with no further need for traditional preservatives. Application has a high efficacy against microorganisms in a broader range of ph compared to many other compounds. In emulsions the raw material can be mixed with the aqueous phase or with the oil phase. The solid material already melts at 30 C. However, preferably it is simply dissolved in the aqueous or oil phase at higher temperatures (80 C). Please make sure when dissolving that the ph is not higher than 7 to avoid hydrolysis. With a recommended use concentration of 0,3 % to 1,0 % can be easily used in emulsions, surfactant based products and hydroalcoholic products. In some cases can have an impact on emulsion viscosity and stability. Please check stability issues carefully. dermosoft GMCY is clearly soluble in surfactant based products and hydroalcoholic products. In aqueous formulations the addition of solubilizing agents or glycols may be necessary. 3 Cosmetic functions Different cosmetic functions are obtained with dermosoft GMCY Hydrating: Glycolic structures are well known skin moisturizers as their free hydroxy groups can bind water molecules 3,4. The proportion of esterified glycerol contained in will contribute to the hydrating properties of the cosmetic product at recommended use concentrations. The short lipophilic chain will penetrate and attach to the lipidic parts of human skin and thus the hydrophilic part of the compound can much better retain moisture in the stratum corneum. Refatting: Due to its amphiphilic structure can also deliver and retain oil components in the upper layer of the skin. The compound works as a link between hydrophilic and lipohilic structures in the skin, thus improving the delivery of oil components to the skin. Anti acne activity: It is well known that acne is caused by several factors leading to spots and impurities on the skin. Among others, the sebum content of the skin, the occlusion of sebaceous glands and the activity of microorganisms are the main factors for this dermatological condition 5. Regarding the microorganisms, mainly gram-positive bacteria are acne causing species and namely Propionicaterium acne is known to play a fundamental role in causing acne. has shown an extraordinary activity against this germ and has therefore been used for many years to support the efficacy of anti acne products. Antimicrobial efficacy: Although may be employed for many of its additional valuable cosmetic functions, the excellent antimicrobial activity is appreciated by many manufacturers for improving the microbiological stability. In most cases it will allow to eliminate traditional preservatives from the product. As can be seen in the challenge tests shown below, in combination with a fungicidal component all relevant germs are eliminated quickly and effectively. For an optimum efficacy the ph of the formulation should be between 4,5 and 7,0. The efficacy can be increased in many formulations by addition of Zn-salts (0,1% - 0,2%), citrate (0,5% - 1%) or lactate (0,5% - 1%). The following figures show how the dermosoft concept makes it possible to formulate microbiologically sound products without any traditional preservatives. All the microbiological tests are done in an independent external and certified laboratory according to the Pharmacopoeia Europea.
