2 Taking inspiration from Nature: Biomimicry and Bioflavonoids from propolis Propolis is a mixture of substances secreted by plants in order to protect their buds from several exogenous factors like: weather bacteria and microorganisms oxidizing agents ultraviolet radiations Polyphenols The chemical composition of propolis: 4-6% Resins -3% Beeswax, vegetable waxes, oils 3-7% Essential oils, volatile substances 3-7% Sugars 3-5% Polyphenols (Bioflavonoids and Phenolic Acids) Phenolic acids Aglycon bioflavonoids Glycosides The polyphenols portion is the one which is responsible for the protection from exogenous agents. Our research has focused precisely on that part, investigating on possible similarities between the positive effects registered in the vegetable kingdom and the cosmetic efficacy (Biomimicry concept). Flavocare : what is it? FLAVOCARE, standardized extracts from propolis in which the bio-active polyphenolic combination (phenolic acids, aglycon bioflavonoids, glycosides) is preserved, has been obtained through a high efficiency patented process, combining selective extraction and standardization (M.E.D. - Dynamic Multi Extraction). Among the polyphenols there are Apigenin, Chrysin, Galangin, Pinocembrin, Pinobanksin, Quercetin, which represent more than 5% of the total composition (analysis performed with double titration in HPLC-ESI-MS and UV-FolinCiocalteau). 3 3 Cosmetic efficacy: Flavocare has been tested by means of in-vitro tests as well as in-vivo tests In-VITRO Test: Bacterial Inhibition Flavocare Hydroglyceric has been tested on some bacterial strains at different concentrations to determine respectively MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) and MCB (Minimum Bactericidal Concentration). In-VITRO Test: Anti-inflammatory Activity The anti-inflammatory activity has been evaluated regulating the pro-inflammatory marker (TNFalpha) in: Non-treated cell cultures (negative control, CTR-) Cell cultures in which an event of acute inflammation is induced (positive control, CTR+) Cell cultures in which an event of acute inflammation is induced and treated with Flavocare at the same time p<, 8 8, -9,6% TNFAlpha pg/ml 6 4 5, 5,8 CTR- CTR+ Flavocare,5mg/cm Flavocare has an effective impact on cell culture induced inflammation of human fibroblasts, reducing the release of TNFalpha pro-inflammatory cytokine (monitored through Elisa s essay) and demonstrating a high anti-inflammatory activity. 4 4 In-VIVO Test: Deodorizing Power The deodorizing power, suggested by the encouraging results of the bacterial inhibition tests on the Staphyloccocus Hominis strain, has been evaluated through in-vivo SNIFF TEST. Test protocol consists on observations at 8h and 4h from the application of one deodorant micro-emulsion containing,5% Flavocare hydroglyceric on a panel of subjects. 5 5 In-VIVO Test: Reduction of acneic lesion This cosmetic activity, inspired by the bacterial inhibition tests on the Propionibacterium Acnes strain, has been evaluated in-vivo through daily applications (morning/night for 8 days) of an emulsion containing 4% of Flavocare Hydroglyceric. Tests has been conducted on 34 volunteers of both sexes (7 of them constituted the control group who was treated with the placebo), in the age range 8-4 with Acne-Prone Skin. Three different evaluations has been performed: Acneic lesions evaluation, Sebometric evaluation (Sebometer sm85), High resolution picture with,5 light normalization. For the acneic lesion evaluation the IGA-FDA Acne Severity scale was used.
