December 18, 2008 Rocky Point Carrier Joins the Club District Manager David Fields congratulates Rural Carrier Mary Tompkins on her Million Mile Award. Rural Carrier Mary Tompkins was Mid-Carolinas District s first inductee into the Million Mile Club for Fiscal Year Tompkins was recognized for the noteworthy accomplishment during a recent ceremony at the Rocky Point (NC) Post Office. Mid-Carolinas District Manager David Fields and (A) Manager, Post Office Operations Bob Brooks congratulated Tompkins on more than 30 years of driving with no preventable accidents. Fields noted that few carriers achieve this milestone. To drive for more than 35 years is a big deal; to do so safely is especially commendable. You are definitely part of an elite group, remarked Fields. Tompkins, who was joined at the ceremony by her daughters, Bonnie and Cindy, and her sonin-law, Mike, says the miles went by quickly for her because she loves her job. This is the icing on the cake. The real reward is just being able to do my job. Rocky Point Postmaster Darlene Parrow says she wasn t surprised when she received notice of Tompkins award. Mary is the kind of employee every Postmaster wants. She s safe, dependable and her customers love her. She really is one in a million. Now, Tompkins has the award to prove it. ###
March 2, 2009 Blacksburg SC Carrier Has Reasons to Celebrate District Manager David Fields, Sr. joins Blacksburg Postmaster Angela Greene, Retired Postmaster John Batchelor and POOM Rodney DeFlumeri in celebrating City Carrier W. Campbell Martin s Service Award and Million Mile Achievement. Campbell Martin said he wanted to end his career with a perfect day on the street, and by most counts, his morning in the office was a good way to start. Martin was honored for earning the Million Mile Award, an achievement attained by few carriers in the Postal Service. The Million Mile Award is bestowed on carriers who have delivered mail for at least 30 years and had no preventable accidents. Martin is only the fifth carrier this year to receive a Million Mile Award in the Mid- Carolinas District. District Manager David C. Fields, Sr. congratulated Martin on his achievement and heralded his accomplishment. According to Fields, You are joining an elite group, and I hope you realize how significant this award is. Thank you for doing your job and doing it safely. Fields also presented Martin with his Service Award commemorating 36 years of service. When Fields asked what Martin had planned for his first day of retirement, Martin replied, I just want to sleep in. Fields was joined by District Safety Manager Stephanie Harris, Blacksburg Postmaster Angela Greene, Manager, Post Office Operations Rodney DeFlumeri and Retired Blacksburg Postmaster Frank Batchelor, who hired Martin 36 years ago. Martin said he was humbled that so many Postal leaders took time out of their schedules to honor him because it s just a privilege to do his job. I took this job to be a servant to our customers, and it feels pretty good to be recognized for doing that. ###
April 16, 2009 Mooresville Carrier Joins The Club District Manager Dave Fields congratulates Rural Carrier Glen Parker on his Million Mile Award. When Mooresville (NC) Rural Carrier Glen Parker decided to retire from the Postal Service after nearly 29 years of service, he thought he would leave with little fanfare. But, Postmaster Doris Reed had other plans. Reed had already received notification that Parker was the Mid-Carolinas District s latest inductee into the Million Mile Club. The Club consists of employees who have driven for 30 years or one million miles with no preventable accidents. District Manager Dave Fields was on hand to recognize Parker during a recent ceremony and bestowed praise on Parker s distinguished service. Fields congratulated Parker on a successful career. It is a true distinction to earn the Million Mile Award because it represents the highest standard of safety in driving. Out of nearly 5,000 employees who drive in our District, this is only the sixth Million Mile Award this year. That s a tremendous feat. Fields also presented Parker with his Service Award acknowledging 29 years of government service. Parker plans to spend time with family and cultivate his nursery during his retirement. ##
May 27, 2009 Roseboro Honors Million Mile Murry Pictured (l-r): David Mills, Cathy Collins, Joy Bullard, Murry Bullard, David Fields, Sr. and Bob Brooks. By all indications, Murry Bullard is a man who appreciates consistency. Not only has Bullard served as a Rural Carrier for nearly 32 years, each of those years was spent at Roseboro Post Office where Bullard began his career as a substitute carrier. In keeping with his consistent nature, Bullard s wife of nearly 45 years, is also a carrier in neighboring Autryville. Bullard s reliability has undoubtedly been a factor in achieving one million miles of driving without a motor vehicle accident. His feat earned him the National Safety Council s Million Mile Award, along with a plaque and pin. Bullard will also be in the running to represent North Carolina and compete for the National Best Safe Driver of the Year Award. Mid-Carolinas District Manager Dave Fields presented Bullard with the award, stating, I appreciate you performing your job consistently and safely, day in and day out. When our customers think of the Postal Service, they think of the employees they see. And you re doing a great job representing our organization. Officer-in-Charge Cathy Collins also recognized Diana Lewis, Elise Doan and William Cain with Safe Driving Certificates. ##
June 17, 2009 Eutaw Carrier Drives A Million Safe Miles Maged Aziz, David Mills, David Fields, Sr. and Charles Miller present Lorenzo Watson (center) with his Million Mile Award Fayetteville s Eutaw Station had cause for celebration recently when two city carriers were recognized for their safe driving habits. City Carrier Lorenzo Watson received the ninth Million Mile Award this Fiscal Year in the Mid-Carolinas District. Out of nearly 5,000 carriers in the District, Watson is now part of a select group. Watson has worked in several Fayetteville offices, but Eutaw will likely be his last stop before retirement. Watson prays before leaving every day, and for nearly 30 years, he has safely driven approximately one million miles without a preventable accident. That accomplishment earned Watson recognition from District Manager Dave Fields and a plaque from the National Safety Council. Fields thanked Watson, stating, Your awareness to safety reflects positively on you and our organization. Thanks for your commitment. Manager, Post Office Operations Maged Aziz, HR Manager David Mills and Postmaster Charles Skip Miller congratulated Watson on his achievement. Fields and Miller also presented General Clerk Sandra Lewis with her 35-year service pin during the ceremony. ##

Senior Plant Manager Scott Raymond presented Lee with his plaque and pin, remarking I m amazed at your ability to log so many miles and remain safe while doing it. We recognize the tremendous difficulty navigating in Charlotte s traffic. It s quite an accomplishment, and I m honored to recognize you today. District Manager David C. 15 August 7, 2009 Laurel Hill Carrier Is One In A Million District Mgr. Dave Fields, Peggy High and Rural Carrier Clarence High celebrate the carrier s Million Mile Award Laurel Hill Post Office has a history of celebrating successes, and the evidence hangs on several walls inside the Office. Each plaque represents accomplishments of the employees of Laurel Hill, and each plaque bears the name of Clarence High. Recently High added another accolade by becoming the Mid-Carolinas District s latest inductee into the Million Mile Club. District Manager David C. Fields, Sr. presented the Rural Carrier with the National Safety Council s Million Mile Award for one million miles of driving with no accidents. Fields commended High, saying, It s always an honor to recognize employees who represent the Postal Service with excellence. To drive 35 years without an accident requires diligence and dedication, and it s a privilege for me to be here today to celebrate your accomplishment. High says he can t take all the credit. I have to thank my customers for being there for me and the great people I ve had the pleasure to work with all these years. They ve made it possible for me to do my job well. I ve just been blessed. High also thanked Peggy High, his wife of 40 years for being by his side. She deserves an award, too. Fields also presented High with his 35-year service award. Postmaster Dennis Johns, MPOO (A) Craig Kinlaw and HR Manager David Mills joined Fields for the presentation. ##
September 2, 2009 Carrier Earns Safe Driving Award Despite Hazards District Manager Dave Fields presents Jean Gurganious with a Safe Driving Award from National Safety Council Letter carriers face many challenges in the course of their deliveries. Rain, sleet and snow are often quoted as obstacles, but many will tell you that dogs can be just as dangerous. Rural Carrier Jean Gurganious would add logs to her list. Logs? Indeed, log trucks are a frequent hazard faced on the rural roads in Ivanhoe NC, but Gurganious has a trick to handling them, I just move out the way. Those -- and other safe driving techniques -- earned Gurganious a Safe Driver of the Year Award of Honor for the Capital Metro Area. The National Safety Council (NSC) gives the awards for deserving drivers who have achieved 15 years and 100,000 miles of accident-free driving. Gurganious is one of only 46 drivers in the Mid-Carolinas District to receive the award this year. Postmaster Lela Robinson submitted Gurganious s name for the recognition, and District Manager Dave Fields personally presented the certificate. Fields thanked Gurganious for her dedication to safety, stating This is one of the best parts of my job, being able to recognize the people who go out every day and deliver the mail safely. (A) Manager, Post Office Operations Robert Brooks and Human Resources Manager David Mills thanked PM Robinson for nominating Gurganious and for the emphasis on safety throughout the office. ###
September 15, 2009 DSI Practices What He Teaches David Fields, Sr. joins David Mills, Aileen Livingston and Laura Brown in honoring Michael Hart for safe driving Driving Safety Instructor (DSI) Michael Hart evaluates postal employees driving habits on a regular basis. He corrects unsafe behavior and offers pointers for improvement. When he provides guidance to drivers, his knowledge is based on more than just his training. It s from experience because Hart has always practiced what he teaches. During his twenty-five years with the Postal Service, Hart has maintained a safe driving record. In recognition of this accomplishment, District Manager Dave Fields recently presented Hart with a 25-year Safe Driving Award from the National Safety Council. Fields also recognized Hart s 25 years of government service. We appreciate everything you do for us, and we look forward to another presentation in five years. Safety Specialists Laura Brown and Aileen Livingston also thanked Hart for being a valuable member of the Safety team. Brown said, What you do for safety in the city of Charlotte is invaluable. HR Manager David Mills agreed, The DSI plays an important role in promoting safe driving among our work force. ##
September 15, 2009 Driving Safety Instructor Joins Another Elite Group Skip Miller, Dave Fields, Dave Mills and Maged Aziz congratulate Roger Williams (center) on his Million Mile Award As a part of the Marine Corps, Roger Williams was accustomed to being one of the few and the proud. When he became a Driving Safety Instructor, Williams joined another small group of employees dedicated to coaching, observing and evaluating drivers in the Postal Service. Recently, Williams was admitted into yet another elite group when he was inducted into the Million Mile Club. District Manager David C. Fields, Sr. presented Williams with the National Safety Council s Million Mile Award in recognition of his thirty years or one million miles of accident-free driving. Fields thanked Williams for his dedication to safety, stating, We appreciate your efforts in raising safety awareness among our drivers. You ve been instrumental in helping the district reduce its motor vehicle accident rate. Williams also received his 30-year service award and plans to retire on October 1 to pursue his next career as an antique dealer. Williams says he ll miss the Post Office. I ve worn several hats, doing everything from farming to hunting, but I really take pride in wearing my postal uniform. Williams also looks forward to taking care of a few items his wife Wanda noted on his honey-do list. Safety specialist Laura Brown, Fayetteville Postmaster Skip Miller, HR Manager David Mills and Senior MPOO Maged Aziz joined Fields for the presentation. ##
