2 Everything Matters: Inside Nationwide Children s July 2012 Everything Matters: Inside Nationwide Children s July 2012 Megan Shock Editor :: Brentine Stevens Graphic Designer :: Brad Smith Photographer :: Dan Smith Photographer Megan Shock Editor :: Brentine Stevens Graphic Designer :: Brad Smith Photographer :: Dan Smith Photographer 10 years ago, we made a promise to the community. We kept it. And you helped make it all possible. Our Grand Opening weekend of events was fun and inspiring. More than 7,000 employees and their families took advantage of the beautiful weather and joined us for the Staff Celebration Picnic. From face painting and jugglers, to story time and hospital tours, we had activities for everyone. The following day, more than 4,000 people joined us for our Community Celebration Day. And we didn t let bad weather on Monday stop our celebrations. Despite the rain, the Dedication Ceremony for the new hospital was the icing on the cake of our celebration events. More than 1,000 patients, families, local community leaders and Nationwide Children s staff came together to mark the occasion. Sophie Sheridan, a patient whose family shared her story at the 2008 groundbreaking ceremony, joined us again to open the ceremony. Former and current patients and Nationwide Children s employees took the stage to introduce the ceremony s speakers and share their wishes. My wish is that no one has to fight cancer no more. -Cayden Beau Hefner Max Damron, a 14-year old who has spina bifida, explained, What I like about this hospital are the hot nurses, before introducing Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman. And 5-year-old Cayden Beau Hefner, a leukemia patient who you might recognize from our Every Gift Matters campaign, closed the ceremony by sharing, My wish is that no one has to fight cancer no more. You may remember Cayden Beau Hefner from the 2011 Holiday Campaign. Beau, who is battling cancer, receives treatment at Nationwide Children s. And as a Miracle Mile Patient Champion, Beau will be cheering on his mom during the Nationwide Children s Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon this October. FPO To watch a video of the Dedication Ceremony, visit NationwideChildrens.org/Inside-Nationwide-Childrens. It s not too late to share a wish! 3 Columbus just expanded its role as a medical research leader. The foundation for research at Nationwide Children s Hospital can be traced back decades, but the first dedicated facility, the Wexner Institute for Pediatric Research, opened in Since then, The Research Institute has expanded to include 12 Centers of Emphasis and more than doubled the number of principal investigators (since 2001). Our scientific faculty publishes more than 500 studies in medical and scientific journals each year. We re home to more than 900 clinical studies. Our third research building is more than bricks and mortar. It is evidence that we are home to research worth investing in, research that changes children s lives. It s more room for big ideas. More room to expand our impact on child health. For children in central Ohio and throughout the world. Best of the Best For the first time, Nationwide Children s Hospital has been named to U.S.News & World Report s Honor Roll list for the Best Children s Hospitals rankings. Ranking seventh on this prestigious list, we are one of only 12 children s hospitals nationwide to earn this best of the best national distinction. In addition to the Honor Roll distinction, Nationwide Children s has once again ranked in all 10 specialties. This is the seventh straight year that Nationwide Children s has been recognized by the U.S.News listings. This distinction is a testament to the quality and dedication of our talented staff. You are at the heart of our continued success and exemplify excellence at every level. Your commitment to outstanding patient care, research and teaching is the constant force that will continue to advance Nationwide Children s. View the full results online at USNews.com/ChildrensHospitals or in the August issue of U.S.News & World Report, available on newsstands in August. Nationwide Children s rankings include: #5 in Cardiology and Heart Surgery #5 in Gastroenterology #6 in Pulmonary #9 in Nephrology #10 in Neurology and Neurosurgery #11 in Urology #12 in Diabetes and Endocrinology #13 in Neonatology #23 in Cancer #36 in Orthopedics Did you know? The Research Institute at Nationwide Children s is nationally ranked in the top 10 for NIH research funding. We re also home to the first Centers for Disease Control and Prevention injury research center for children. We operate the nation s first pediatric and adult congenital heart research and training program. We have the world s only comprehensive perinatal feeding disorders research program. We are the data coordinating center for the Autism Genome Project. Web Exclusive!
