1 Topic 01: Muscle Physiology Influence of Exercise on Physiological Characteristics of Muscle Fibers Holloszy JO. Biochemical adaptations in muscle. Effects of exercise on mitochondrial oxygen uptake and respiratory enzyme activity in skeletal muscle. Journal of Biological Chemistry. 242(9): , Gollnick PD, Armstrong RB, Saubert CW IV, Piehl K, and Saltin B. Enzyme activity and fiber composition in skeletal muscle of untrained and trained men. Journal of Applied Physiology. 33: , Gollnick PD, Armstrong RB, Saltin B, Saubert CW IV, Sembrowich WL, and Shepherd RE. Effect of training on enzyme activity and fiber composition of human skeletal muscle. Journal of Applied Physiology. 34: , HPER 6760 Summer 2010 Dr. Cheatham The Players John Holloszy John O. Holloszy was born January 2, 1933 in Vienna, Austria. His advanced education began at Oregon State University where he received a bachelors degree in physiology in He immediately enrolled in medical school at Washington University and completed requirements for a M.D. in From Dr. Holloszy was an assistant resident at Washington University Medical Center. In 1958 he became chief resident at that same institution. He was assistant and associate professor from He received an appointment of full professor of preventive medicine and public health in Currently he is director at Washington University, School of Medicine, division of physiology. His research interests have been effects of exercise on sugar transport into muscle, serum lipids, cardiovascular function, and enzymes involved in energy metabolism in muscle. Over the last few years his research emphasis has involved types of glucose transporters and mechanisms involving glucose transport. 1

2 The Players Philip Gollnick Philip D. Gollnick was born in Amherst, Wisconsin in He received a B.S. from UW Lacrosse in general science/p.e. in 1956, an M.S. in P.E. from Washington State in 1958, and a Ph.D. in biochemistry/physiology from Washington State in He was a faculty member at Washington State in the P.E. department and the Department of Veterinary and Comparative Anatomy ( ) until he passed away in the summer of Dr. Gollnick established an international reputation as the preeminent exercise biochemist by virtue of a series of collaborative investigations with leading physiologists throughout the world. Dr. Gollnick s most notable contributions include the consistent quality of his work, and the number of former students who are now earning their respective niches. Dr. Gollnick published almost 40 chapters in various textbooks, was an invited speaker at international conferences for 20+ years, and published over 100 manuscripts concerning acute and chronic adaptive responses in both human and animal models. The Players Bengt Saltin Bengt Saltin was born on June 3rd, 1935 in Stockholm, Sweden. His professional career began in 1956 when he enrolled in the medical school at Karolinska Institute. While progressing towards his M.D., Bengt was active in research involving physiological aspects of exercise. Bengt continued his educational progress in pursuit of a Ph.D. in physiology under the direction of Per Olof Åstrand. He completed the degree requirements in In 1964, Bengt appeared as first author for the first time on three separate publications. His thesis was one of those publications which was: "Aerobic work capacity and circulation of exercise in man. With special reference to the effect of prolonged exercise and/or heat exposure". Following his Ph.D. work, Bengt was an assistant professor in exercise physiology at Karolinska Institute for three years. His research began to shift modes into muscle metabolism involving muscle temperature and glycogen (3). Bengt was directly involved with twenty two original publications while an assistant professor. In 1968, he received an appointment of professorship in applied physiology at Karolinska Institute. His research emphasis was on muscle metabolites and profiles, perspiration and thermoregulation during different modes of exercise. From , Bengt was a professor of human physiology at August Krogh Institute at University of Copenhagen. A total of eighty nine publications in many aspects of exercise/muscle metabolism occurred during this time. In 1990, Bengt moved back to Karolinska Institute as full professor where he has remained to the present. Bengt Saltin is the author of over 170 original articles and 75 reviews or chapters in books. He is the editor of two scientific books and several texts for pre and postgraduate students, including a textbook in physiology for medical students. Over the past 30 years, Bengt has probably been the most influential exercise physiologist in the world. spare time. 2
