2 Welcome I am delighted to extend a very warm welcome to Bath for all attendees of the 2013 International Scientific and Clinical Meeting on Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). This three-day meeting has been organised by members of the Pain and the Sympathetic Nervous System (PSNS) Special Interest Group of the International Association for the Study of Pain with organisational support provided by Aesculap Academia. I would particularly like to acknowledge the efforts of Dr Jenny Lewis, Dr Andreas Goebel, Dr Roberto Perez and Mrs Aynsley Pix. The stimulating programme has been designed to meet the needs of clinicians and academics with an interest in CRPS, be that novice or expert. It includes plenary lectures from leading scientists and clinicians in the field, as well as poster sessions and workshops to enable more informal discussions. Please consider becoming part of this programme by submitting an abstract for the poster and oral presentations. As CRPS encompasses such a wide range of signs, symptoms and impacts on both central and peripheral mechanisms, the topics covered in this meeting are appropriately diverse. They range from considering the relationship between pain and body perception, as discussed by our keynote speaker Professor Giandomenico Iannetti on our scientific day, through to the diagnosis and management of persistent CRPS on day two of our clinical programme. The inclusion of a debate between central and peripheral theorists should stimulate plenty of discussion in between. The host city of Bath, has been intrinsically linked with healthcare since the Roman times when the sick came to bathe in the warm mineral waters. The Roman Baths are still a fascinating tourist attraction and our conference social programme includes a visit there. However, it is probably the stunning Georgian architecture for which Bath is best known. As an example of this, we are delighted that our meeting will be held in the beautiful surroundings of the Assembly Rooms, considered to be the most noble and elegant of any in the kingdom when they were completed in Visited by Charles Dickens and a regular venue for Jane Austen and her many fictional characters, the Assembly Rooms were the hub of Georgian society. Here the residents of Bath shared their daily news and kept abreast of world events. It is therefore a very fitting place for exchanging ideas and knowledge to advance our care and understanding of those with CRPS. I do hope we shall see you in Bath for three wonderful days of networking, science, clinical guidance and discussion on and around CRPS.
