9 Keynote Speakers Professor Mark Bayley MD FRCPC Dr Mark Bayley is a Professor in the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, Canada. He is the holder of the Saunderson Family Chair in Brain Injury Research, Senior Scientist and Medical Director of the Brain and Spinal Cord rehabilitation Program at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute of the University Health Network. Dr Bayley has a strong research interest in implementation science, in particular, how the best scientific evidence is implemented into practice and how to measure its uptake by clinicians. He has authored a number of clinical practice guidelines and led expert panels. Examples of his work include the Canadian Stroke Best Practice Guidelines ( the INCOG-International Cognitive rehabilitation guidelines, the Evidence Based review of the Acquired Brain injury Rehabilitation ( the Ontario Neuro Trauma Foundation (ONF-INESS) best practice guidelines ( Best Practice Guidelines for the Management of Persistent Symptoms after Mild Traumatic Brain injury ( He also has extensive experience in implementation activities in his role as evaluation leader for the Ontario Stroke System, principal investigator of The Stroke Canada Optimization of Rehabilitation by Evidence Implementation Trial (SCORE-IT), the Viatherapy smartphone app for stroke recovery ( and the Rick Hansen Institute SCI HIGH project that develops indicators for Spinal Cord Injury Care. He is also actively involved in the evaluation of technology and novel models of rehabilitation care, designed to enhance neurological recovery after brain injury using randomized controlled trials including, the Getting on with Life after Stroke and the EVREST (Efficacy of Virtual Reality Exercises using Wii gaming technology in Stroke Rehabilitation) and the Evaluation of the Myndmove Functional Electrical stimulation device for arm recovery. Dr Peter Thomas Peter is the Director of Policy and Operations at the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI). He has extensive experience in science policy, strategy, and government relations. 10 Abstracts Wednesday 7 June HMRI Medical Research Week Seminars Implementing Evidence into Practice in the Age of Alternative Facts Prof Mark Bayley, University of Ontario, Canada A review of knowledge translation and implementation science and what clinicians and researchers can learn from marketers, behavioural economists and even politicians about changing practice. The gap between publication of new evidence and implementation into practice is estimated to be about 17 years and of that only a portion of the evidence is implemented into practice. While not all evidence is worthy of implementation, there remain significant challenges finding strategies that are consistently effective for changing clinical practice when necessary. Knowledge translation and implementation is highly context specific and therefore must result from a thoughtful planned process that is tailored to the situation. This presentation will review the evidence behind current approaches for implementation and some of the challenges in the research in the field. By the end of the presentation, participants should be able to: 1. Discuss the key steps in a model for implementing knowledge into practice. 2. Name at least 3 sources of barriers to implementation of evidence into practice. 3. Discuss some implementation strategies based on implementation research and behavioural theory including those derived from the fields of economics and marketing that could be adapted to increase the uptake of evidence in practice. Supporting the Health and Medical Research Continuum Dr Peter Thomas, Director of Policy and Operations, AAMRI There are significant changes that are set to affect how health and medical research is structured and funded in Australia. The first is the $20 billion Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), and the second is the Structural Review of NHMRC s Grant Program. The MRFF is set to deliver around $1 billion in additional health and medical research funding by 2021, effectively doubling the Australian Government s annual investment in health and medical research. The NHMRC Structural Review has the potential to change how investigator-led research is supported. These changes provide immense opportunities, but careful consideration and planning is needed to ensure maximum benefits can be realised. Ensuring funding duplication is avoided, support reaches the highest quality projects, and developing a strong research pipeline from lab-based discoveries through to the development of new drugs and treatments for patients are just a few of the policy areas that need careful consideration. This paper explores these issues and looks to see what policy issues need to be addressed to ensure strong health and medical research continuum in Australia. NEWCASTLE FORUM 7-9 JUNE
11 Abstracts Thursday 8 June CRE Forum Keynote Walking Through the Valley of Death Between Research and Practice and Living to Tell About It Prof Mark Bayley, University of Ontario, Canada A review of experience implementing stroke evidence into practice There are over 1000 randomized control trials in the field of stroke rehabilitation but many important research questions remain and unfortunately much of this evidence has not been implemented into practice. Two valleys of death have been identified where medical research stalls: the first from basic science into human studies and the second from human trials in to day to day clinical practice and health policy. This presentation will review a number of initiatives to implement stroke rehabilitation research in the Canadian and international context. These initiatives include: building consensus as to research and knowledge translation priorities, the challenges of synthesizing rehabilitation evidence into guidelines that are user-friendly, examples of integrating research to practice clinics locally, executing a large pan-canadian cluster randomized implementation trial and strategies that have been used at a population level in Canada to change stroke system performance. By the end of the session participants should be able to: 1. Discuss how stroke research evidence can be improved and how evidence can be synthesized and tailored in a way to make it easier for clinicians to use. 2. Identify some implementation strategies that have been evaluated in the stroke rehabilitation context that could be adopted in Australia 3. Name 2 or 3 strategies that could be used to influence health system leaders and funders support for best practice implementation NEWCASTLE FORUM 7-9 JUNE
12 Abstracts Friday 9 June Concurrent Open Workshop Starting with the End in Mind: A Workshop to Promote Integration of Knowledge Translation and Implementation Principles into all Research One of the challenges of knowledge translation is that researchers in stroke rehabilitation need to consider how the evidence that they are developing will ultimately be used. This workshop is designed for researchers who are interested in improving the uptake of their research and also better understanding the field of implementation science. NB: Researchers are encouraged to bring one or two examples of their research underway that could be used as specific content to work through the workshop exercises. During the workshop, participants will: 1. Use a framework to identify barriers to implementation of their research ideas and innovations. 2. Identify the target users of the knowledge they are developing and the changes in the target users behaviour that are necessary for successful implementation. 3. Develop some implementation science research questions including: a. Selecting some qualitative and/or quantitative strategies for evaluating the extent of implementation; and b. Selecting potential feasible methodologies for acquiring data to answer these questions. NEWCASTLE FORUM 7-9 JUNE
