Calf pneumonia continues to be a costly disease. Pneumonia costs farmers money. Estimates vary between 82 per affected suckler calf and 43 per affected dairybreed beef calf, with costs rising significantly when retreatments are required. Some of the costs are highly visible, but many are hidden. It is these hidden costs that really drain profits, especially 9 mortality 6 Additional labour costs 24 reduced growth over the whole growth period of an animal. Reduced weight gain, increased labour and costs of treatment all take their toll. 24 treatment Typical costs per sick calf (Costs vary from outbreak to outbreak) Reference: 1. Andrews AH. BCVA Spring Vol. 8, Part 2

Lung damage compromises the growth performance of UK calves. 2 Out of 645 finished cattle from 15 different UK farms, 48% of animals had lung consolidation. Cattle with more lung damage invariably grew less well for their age than those with less lung damage, and carcass grades were also poorer. Number of consolidated lobes Grams Lung consolidation has a proven association with up to 202g reduction in daily live weight gain (DLWG). Reference: 2. Association between lung lesions and grade and estimated daily live weight gain in bull beef at slaughter. P. Williams, L. Green. 1, November 2007 BCVA.

Bacteria are a key cause of pneumonia. Calf pneumonia is widespread and complex. Many factors contribute to its onset, including poor ventilation, underfeeding, stress and the mixing of age groups, but ultimately the disease results from bacteria and viruses infecting calf lungs. Between 2011 and 2013, vets sent over 1000 samples to UK laboratories for pneumonia investigation. According to the data analysis, in calves under six months of age the bacterium Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica was the most common pathogen implicated in the various disease outbreaks No. of calves (aged <6 months) Mannheimia SPP Pasteurella multocida Histophilus somni Trueperella pyogenes RSV Mycoplasma bovis IBR PI3 Reference: 3. VIDA data from 2011 to 2013 on calves under 6 months of age

Bovilis Bovipast RSP is the only combined vaccine to help protect against the key bacterial and viral causes of pneumonia in calves: Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica RSV Respiratory Syncytial Virus PI3 Parainfluenza 3 Virus

Reduce antibiotic treatment. Calves vaccinated with Bovilis Bovipast RSP require significantly fewer antibiotics during the first 190 days of the rearing period. 4 Animals vaccinated with Bovilis Bovipast RSP needed 15% fewer antibiotics than those that were not vaccinated. This trial demonstrates that vaccination significantly reduced antibiotic usage on farm, reinforcing that prevention is better than cure. Less antibiotic usage clearly means saving in treatment costs. 15% fewer antibiotics Reference: 4. H.A. Vahl, H. Bekman and J. van Riel. Report of the Veal Calf Vaccination Study with Bovilis Bovipast, Published by the Dutch Product Board Livestock and Meat (PVV) - Jan 2014.
