2 Welcome MESSAGE Dr. O.P. Sharma Organizing Secretary India is a developing nation, wi grossly inadequate medical infrastructure to take care of its vast population. Between e year 1947, when we became independent & now, ere has been an appreciable reduction in e child morbidity & mortality. Apart from heal awareness, availability of medical treatment & oer factors, vaccinations have played a major role in containing diseases/epidemics. The average life expectancy at bir has gone up from 34 years in 1947 to 68 years currently. It has made significant demographic change leading to higher number of elderly close to 8.8% of e total population. Vaccinations are main armamentarium wi pediatricians for children. There are vaccinations for adolescents, adults and now for elderly as per recommendations of WHO. We strongly feel, ere is gross under utilization of vaccines, which could prove eir wor by curbing vaccine preventable diseases/deas. Hence it is time to update e knowledge of vaccines, revise eir indications & do strong advocacy at e level of World bodies like WHO, Government, Scientific Bodies, Medical Associations & Public at large not only in India but also in our neighboring Sou East Asia Region Countries. We propose a meet of experts, vaccine users, vaccine producers & representatives of Government from Sou East Asian Countries & bring out a comprehensive booklet on Vaccines & send ese recommendation for eir proper implementation. I look forward to welcome you.

4 MESSAGE Dr. Satish Gulati Chairperson Organizing Committee President GSI It is a matter of great pride at Geriatric Society of India is hosting a prestigious international event on vaccine advocacy in Sou East Asian continent on November 6 and in Delhi, capital of our country. Vaccination used to be e field of pediatrics in e 20 century and saved e neonates and children up to 12 years of age. Now as e life expectancy has increased, so e need of providing em more prophylaxis against infectious diseases as elderly individuals are more prone because of decreased immunity wi advancing age. Lower respiratory tract infections especially pneumonia of varied etiology, viral infections such as zoster group, septicemias etc are prominent to be covered wi recent vaccination wi influenza vaccine, pneumococcal vaccine and oer routine immunization for tetanus need to be implemented in day-to-day practice to increase e life span of geriatric patients, especially suffering from diabetes mellitus, urinary tract infections malnutrition etc. I, as president of is honorable association wish e two days academic feat a great success and worldwide spread of knowledge of advocacy.
