5 National Watermelon Day! National Aviation Day! Valerie Gill, LPN Resident Service Director Flu Season The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends annual flu vaccines for everyone 6 months and older. Flu activity can begin as early as October and continue as late as May. Some flu symptoms include: high fever, joint and muscle pain, generalized weakness, warm and flushed skin, red watery eyes, headache, dry cough, sore throat and watery discharge from the nose. In addition to getting a flu vaccine, good prevention habits include: avoiding close contact with people who are sick, staying home when you are sick, covering your mouth and nose, washing your hands, avoiding hand contact with your eyes, nose and mouth, and cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces. Antiviral drugs can be used to treat flu illness and prevent serious flu complications. Treatment with antivirals works best when begun within 48 hours of getting sick, but still can be beneficial when given later in the course of illness. Home remedies can include taking warm showers, increasing fluids, hot chicken soup, bed rest, and over-thecounter analgesics. Take care and be well!
