Each will have two parts: Receptive portion (250 pts): The instructor will sign some sentence/questions, and you write the answer down on your test paper. Expressive portion (150 pts): You and your partner will sign a teacher-assigned dialogue using computer using imovie (MAC) or using capture program on PC and save it in QuickTime, MPEG4, AVI, Windows Media Video (WMV) format on your USB driver or using YouTube. If you give me your USB driver, please make sure that it has your name on it is due so I may know whom it belongs to. They are due on the same day as you are taking the receptive test.

YouTube Instructions: First go to and you will need to sign in/create an account to be able to upload a video. Once you are signed in you will see an upload link/button at the top of the page. Press this button and then it will ask if you want to upload or record from your webcam. So you can either upload a video you have already taken and saved or you can record directly from this site (you will need a computer with a webcam). If you hit the record link/button, you can then start recording. Once you have recorded the video clip, you then publish it. It will automatically upload to YouTube. At this point you can name your video, tag it, describe it and choose from public, unlisted, and private. I would select unlisted since you are sending the link to the professor and only your professor will be able to view your recording. Once you select unlisted it will provide the link to send to your professor. If I receive link as private, I will take 50% off when I receive your unlisted YouTube. After I receive private YouTube, I ll be sending to let you know that I received private (private is you only will see no one else that included me.) Written portion on the final exam (50 pts): involving multiple choice and true/false. Be on time for each exam. If you come in late, quietly take a seat and begin on whichever part instructor is on. Questions that you miss, because of your being late, will count against you. Student Workbook Assignments (50 pts) These assignments are CRITICAL in helping you remember what you have learned and will greatly help you in learning ASL as a second language. As we complete each unit, I ll be collecting your workbook assignments; that is, your answers on a sheet of paper labeling each part/section clearly. No late assignments are accepted for any reason. Reading Articles (30 pts): You will read several articles along with in class discussion. Also you will receive several questions handout for you to type your answers. Here are the follow lists of the articles available during class, Canvas or online. Article # 1: Clarifying a Misconception Article # 2: Audism: Our Reality, Our Battle Article # 3: Switched at Birth: Beyond Silence Article # 4: Lydia Callis Article # 5: Want Some Nasty with your Latte? & Taylor Swift and the Deaf Kids: How a Nasty Prank Brought a Windfall Article # 6: Minnesota School for the Deaf: Celebrates Its Sesquicentennial Receptive Translations (60 pts): One of the main components in this course is to increase your receptive skills and notice more layers of the language. When writing a translation, you need to write it in the first person because you are the storyteller. When you complete a translation activity, please look more closely at the use of Non Manual Behaviors to glean a deeper meaning. Use the instruction sheet for RTs that was provided. These need to be typed and read on the due date. RT # 1: Final Exam (SN DVD in unit 14 at the end in The Story Corner ) RT # 2: Shrove Tuesday (ASL online) RT # 3: The Ball (SN DVD at the end of unit 16 under storytelling ) RT # 4: Cooking Stories-Lasagna RT # 5: Exploring a Cave (SN DVD in unit 13 at the end in The Story Corner ) RT # 6: Places to See in Seattle (SN DVD at the beginning of unit 17) STEP 1- Watch for comprehension: Watch the signed story or conversation several times (5-6) to get the general idea of what it is about. Do not stop or rewind as you watch. Simply watch to challenge yourself- each time you watch it, you will understand more and more. STEP 2- Write a ROUGH-Draft English Translation: Watch the story again pausing, rewinding and writing an English translation. Use complete sentences. Leave blank spots where you do not understand what is happening or you see unknown vocabulary.

STEP 3- Come in for Help: If you have blank areas in your rough-draft, come in and ask me about them and I will help you. You will get the right answer if you do- you have no guarantees if you ask someone else. Do NOT discuss the story or your translation with anyone. Let them get their own A- HA! moment! If you do this project right, your own skills will grow by leaps and bounds! Copy Sign Story (40 points) One of the main components in this course is to increase your expressive signing skills. At least a week before the assignment is due I will review the story with the class, and clarify the expectations and goal of the activity. You will record yourself performing the story on your own time and submit your project by 2PM on due date. You will be graded on: replicating the story exactly how it is signed, taking on the personality of the character, replicating the actions of the character, role shifting, your fluency, use of classifiers, and accuracy of story sequence. There will be opportunities to practice this in class. You may use MAC computer or PC with a capture program and save it in QuickTime, MPEG4, AVI, Windows Media Video (WMV) formats on your USB driver or use YouTube. If you give me your USB driver, please make sure that it has your name on it is due so I may know whom it belongs to. Deaf Ninja- Austin Andrews Road Runner Nat Wilson and Clyde Vincent Objective: Why are we doing this? 1. To practice and improve your expressive skills. 2. To learn what fluent signing feels like. 3. To enhance your appreciation for Deaf stories and Culture. Task: How are we doing this? 1. You will be given a Copy-sign narrative to watch and memorize, then reproduce on video. You will have some class time to work on this project, but it is intended for you to do on your own. 2. You may choose to gloss this story on paper, but this is not necessary. Remember that gloss is a tool only and not a language. This is a homework assignment, you will want to rewind and watch over and over. To be sure you understand everything. As you watch, try to sign along with the story on video. As you memorize, the story, pay special attention to how the signer uses space and what non-manuals are used. 3. You may be given an opportunity to perform this story for a small group first and receive feedback from peers before doing your final story on your portfolio video. We have peer feedback forms to use to help you give one another valuable feedback about how to improve your project before turning it in for credit. 4. Self Evaluation of your story: Once you have had peers evaluate your Copy Sign. You may do a Self Evaluation and set goals for yourself improvement. 5. Record your final story and WATCH IT BEFORE YOU TURN IT IN. This is difficult for most students, however it will be the best way to be sure that you are turning in your BEST work and final project. Lab Assignments (35 points) Each student will have 7 pictures and they will have to describe it in front of the camera. Canvas is a great tool to uploaded or record from there. It can be up to 500 MB video clip to Canvas. You will submit the video clip there. Please make the file in quicktime or MPEG-4. There are four processes of learning ASL in Lab: 1. Each student will read instructions and determine how to sign in ASL. Make video-recorded to practice demonstrate at their best effort. 2. Each student will view the instructor s video and the instructor will acts as an ASL model.

3. Each student will sign and compare their first and second try videos. Students will answer (self or peer) assessment report. Your Lab s Tips: 1. Set up the scene (where? Outside? In-doors? Landscape if important) 2. Identify important details (things that are important to the story or punch-line. Do not explain un-essentials. 3. Narrow these details down to the main point (punch-line or thing of interest). 4. USE CLASSIFIERS! USE CLASSIFIERS! USE CLASSIFIERS! 5. SHOW don t TELL The different purposes of viewing ASL videos are: learning ASL examples from ASL instructor, improve receptive skills, improve ASL comprehension, and increase ASL grammatical skills. The grading will be based on: ASL sign production, ASL grammatical features, non-manual signals, overall signing fluency, and strength and weakness. This will be the guideline to be used on comparing the first and second videos. Practice Logs (20 points) Practice sheet: Quite a few class activities this quarter require work outside of class. You will need to keep a log of your practice sessions with your fellow classmates (only). The practice sheet is due twice per quarter. With 2 practice sessions per week, the focus needs to be using the language (not just chatting), reviewing class concepts and preparing for assignments. Each entry on the practice sheet needs to include who you worked with on the correct date. You do not need to write any additional information. There is one requirement: It is a no voice practice time for at least 20 out of the 30 minutes. Everyone needs to work on this to help each other obtain this goal. Cultural Observation Report: (25 points) Deaf Cultural Community Report Criteria For your 2 hours of cultural observation, you are expected to engage in direct conversation. For each event, you are to observe cultural aspects of Deaf interactions as well as linguistic aspects of ASL. In your report, you must include your feelings when you were present at these events. You are to attend ONE event that includes culturally Deaf people (not oral Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing people). Such activities can be plays with Deaf actors and actresses, signed meetings, and/or sport events at Washington School for the Deaf (WSD). Please note that INTERPRETED events are NOT allowed for your reports. A list of approved activities is attached and the instructor will keep you abreast of any new upcoming events throughout the semester. The Deaf bowling games are not permitted. Bumping into a Deaf person in public unexpectedly and chatting for a short time is not acceptable for your report. If you know of such an activity or event not listed, seek approval from the instructor first. Each report should be one to two typed pages, double-spaced. Late reports will NOT be accepted for invalid reasons. Format of your ASL 221 Deaf Cultural Community Critique Your Deaf Cultural Community critique should follow this format strictly as follows: Format of report: BOLD the titles below before you type your statements in non-bold style. Last Name, First Name ASL 221 Name of ASL Instructor: Event/Activity and Place: Date and Time: Name of Deaf Person(s):

3 impacting facts: Please put each number fact in bold, followed by your impacted information. Please do not write it in just one sentence, but in a phrase to a paragraph for each fact. It should be related to Deaf culture issues, their languages, what is the difference between deaf and hearing culture. For example: #1 Fact: your points. #2 Fact: and opinions/reaction: (at least one paragraph). YOUR opinions/reaction: (at least 1 paragraph) It should relate to Deaf culture issues, their languages, what is the difference between deaf and hearing culture. 7 Pierce College ASL 221 Fall 2013 F = 425 or less Grading scale: (Please note: Lower than 2.0 may not move up to ASL 222) = A (4.0) = A ( ) = B+ ( ) = B ( ) = B- ( ) = C + ( ) = C ( ) = C ( ) = D+ ( ) = D ( ) 64 0 = fail (0.0) FOR YOUR INFORMATION: The instructor will evaluate your skills through the use of tests. It is important for you to understand that grades are weighted. Expressive and receptive skills are primary areas and your ability to produce and understand ASL will be weighted more heavily than written assignments. Student disposition and attitude does count. It is impossible to make grading language proficiency completely objective. Final grades will be influenced by sign production, comprehension, attitude, and disposition. Last Day to Drop Course: See the Fall 2013 schedule of classes for last day to drop or withdraw. COURSE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES 1. No Voicing: You are now in ASL 4. You should be LOOKING FOR opportunities to sign as much as you can with me and with others. If at any time you do not understand what is being taught or signed, please raise your hand and ask- Take charge of your own understanding! In addition, when you are coming in class, it must be absolutely full ASL zone. 2. Cell Phones: No texting during class. Cell phones need to be completely turned off (silent) and in put away during class. If you have a family emergency, let me know before class, and you may leave your cell on the table in front of you. Please leave the room if your emergency call comes in. 3. Attendance/Participation: Class attendance is CRITICAL. This will greatly affect the final grade, so students are cautioned to minimize class absences. After the first 2 absences, the final grade will be lowered by one letter grade for each additional absence. It is necessary for students to attend all their classes and complete outside assignments since language learning is performance-based. Three tardies will be counted as one absence. *Fifteen minutes or more of being late will be recorded as one tardy. 4. Assignment Completion: All homework is due at the beginning of the class. If you are absent that day, you may it to me BEFORE the class hour begins for full credit. Any assignment missed due to an absence must be handed in the day of your return. Late work will be accepted the next class session, but it will only receive ½ possible score, nothing will be accepted after that. 5. Student will be held responsible for their conduct during class and for the work they submit, as outlined in the Pierce College student handbook, which prohibits cheating and plagiarism, disruptive behavior during class (interrupting others; speaking out of turn, and coming to class under influence of illegal drugs and alcohol). Case will be assessed on an individual basis and turned over to the Student Conduct Committee or to the Vice President of Student Services if necessary. 6.
