1 FIT Annual Meeting 2017 Growing our Early Intervention Community Agenda Day One Wednesday June 21, :00-9:30am Sign-in/Packet Pick up 9:30-10:15am Plenary session: Welcome-FIT/DOH, Ambassador/Registry Jeanne DuRivage, FIT Program Manager Ballroom Jim Copeland, DDSD Director Cathy Riley, Open Space Guidelines 10:15-10:30am Break 10:30am-12:00 Plenary Session: Keynote Speaker, Ellen Pope, OTD, OTR/L Ambassador/Registry Ballroom Strengths Matter: How to Embrace the Assets of the Children and Families You Serve Rather than focusing on delays, deficits and disabilities, practitioners should describe children and families by honoring their strengths, capabilities and successes. Using research from social work and positive psychology, practitioners will learn about ways to identify children s and family s many assets and strengths and use them to support successful interventions. 12:15-1:30pm Lunch (plated lunch) Ambassador/Registry Ballroom 1:30-2:45pm Early Childhood Evaluation Program (ECEP); How to Support Families with the Referral Question of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) -Part 1 Presenter: Dara Zafran, PhD This session will discuss ways to streamline the ECEP referral and wait time. Come learn about updates in the ECEP referral process and take home program copies of our new forms. Fun experiential activities will include how to discuss ASD with the family, review scoring of M-CHAT and practice writing up the M-CHAT results to include in CME reports and Individualize Family Service Plans. 1 P age

2 Understanding the Impact of Vision on Development and Considerations for the Assessment of Children who are Blind or Visually Impaired Presenters: Cindy Faris, MA, ECSE/L, TVI/L, DS III, Andrea Montano, MA, OTR/L, DSIII, Julie Maner, MA, PT, COMS, Luanne Stordahl, MS, DSIII Registry Room The impact of vision loss on the development of a child will be discussed as well as areas of the Infant-Toddler Developmental Assessment that are problematic for visually impaired children. The Oregon Project for Preschool Children Who are Blind or Visually Impaired, Skills Inventory, birth to six years, will be discussed as an assessment tool that can provide additional information. The ABC s of the Pyramid Model & How to Adapt it to Early Intervention Presenter: Krystal Chavarilla B.S. Early Childhood Education, Lead Family Service Coordinator/Developmental Instructionalist II, Community Education Coordinator, Aprendamos Intervention Team We grow and learn through the positive and meaningful relationships that we build with our programs, families and children we interact with on a daily basis. In collaboration with the NM Pyramid Model Trainings and Early Intervention providers, a variety of projects, activities and strategies have been created to use in your community to support the understanding of social/emotional development. This presentation will include hands-on and interactive approaches with materials to use in your programs. When Parents Have Learning Difficulties Presenter: Mette J. Pedersen, PhD Ivory Room This session includes discussion of the types of challenges presented when a parent has a learning difficulty, including cognitive disability, and possible criteria to consider when offering support, service coordination, and specific guidance to a family. Case studies will be used to identify challenges and possible resources. State, national, and international resources will be shared. A Dialog about Home Visiting in NM and how it intersects with EI Services Presenter: Joe DeBonis, MA, LCPP, IMN-E(IV) In this session you will learn more about home visiting services in New Mexico and how they compare to and align with early intervention services. 3 Expanded Core Curriculum for Birth to Three: Using a Routines Based Model to Teach Expanded Skills to Children with Visual Impairments Presenters: Andrea Montano, MA, OTR,L, DSIII, Luanne Stordahl, MS, DSIII, NM School for the Blind and Visually Impaired Registry Room The Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) is an essential part of the visually impaired student s education. The ECC teaches expanded skills that are necessary for students with visual impairments to have success in school and throughout their lives. This presentation will explore what the ECC looks like for our very youngest learners; children aged birth to three years old within the context of routines-based services with families. Collaborating with the New Mexico School for the Deaf Presenters: Kristi Halus, MA, DSIII- Assistant Director, Early Intervention and Involvement, Joanne Corwin, MA, DSIII- Director, Early Intervention and Involvement, Emilie Wilding, MA, DSIII- Deaf Mentor Program Coordinator, NM School for the Deaf Children who are deaf or hard of hearing need service providers with specialized training and expertise. Come and learn the many ways NMSD can support your agency as you serve these infants and toddlers, from initial hearing screenings through transition. Fun with FIT KIDS: Beyond the Basics Presenter: Jason Lavy, MBA, NM FIT Ivory Room This presentation will cover how to export data to Excel and manipulate data for better/useful reporting. Coaching Families in Early Intervention Presenter: Ellen Pope, OTD, OTR/L Telling or asking? Doing or reflecting? Charging in or waiting? Which of these strategies do you use in your practice? In this session, you will learn and practice the basics of coaching in early intervention, which includes asking, reflecting, listening and waiting. Coaching is an evidence based adult learning strategy consisting of planning, observing, modeling, and reflecting. Presenters: Randi Malach, M.Cl.Sc. CCC-SLP, DSIII, Director/Abrazos, Amy Pickard, LCSW, DSIII, Early Intervention Director/NAPPR, Grace Coca, BA, Director/LifeROOTS Inc., Karen Burrow, MA, Director/Alta Mira Specialized Family Services, Clarissa Franco, BSW, DSII/FSC, Director of EC Services/La Vida Felicidad, Kathey Phoenix-Doyle, MA, DSIII, Ex.Director/La Vida Felicidad Experienced provider agency managers will share strategies and lessons learned that helped them to be successful in their jobs. Open Space (4 concurrent sessions) Provider hosted sessions on topics generated by program staff. Each group discussion will be facilitated by a volunteer host. Each group will capture the main points of their discussion on a flip chart that will be displayed in the main meeting room. 5 Early Intervention After NICU Discharge: Where Should We Begin? Presenters: Tara Dupont, MD and Gerri Duran, MS. OT/L, FAOTA In this session participants will receive information about frequent diagnoses and conditions that infants and their families experience while in the NICU. Developmental and social implications for these experiences will be discussed. Helping Grieving Families Presenter: Jennifer Barol, LCSW Early intervention providers will often find themselves working with a family who is experiencing a loss. Many grieving families find their profound bereavement compounded by a lack of help and resources during a very painful time.
