2 STRASBOURG Costal Osteosyntheses System* Applicability: Chest wall trauma and reconstruction Indications: Trauma Surgical stabilization of single, multiple and comminuted rib fractures after chest wall trauma. Dependent on the severity of the injury, the implant system offers basically two different yet combinable implant choices: 3D rib clips with six or nine segments to stabilize single fractures in various locations. Implant bridges consisting of two or more rib clips lined up on a connecting bar to bridge and stabilize several rib fragments, especially in comminuted fractures. Reconstructive Surgery Chest wall defect bridging after tumor removal or related reconstructive surgery of chest wall defects.
3 Material: Titanium six good reasons which speak for this implant material The implants of the Why Titanium? - System are made from pure Titanium. 1. Titanium has an extraordinary tissue compatibility and resists corrosion from exposure to air and the biological environment. Therefore, Titanium is especially suited for long-term implants and can, according to today s knowledge, remain indefinitely in the body. 2. Conventional implant steel loses its body tolerance because, during shaping, bending or manipulating, small hairline cracks appear on the surface. This is the cause of corrosion, as well as metal deterioration and adverse tissue reaction in the implant site. By contrast with implant steel, the dense, strong oxide layer of pure Titanium renews itself spontaneously in the biological environment, even after bending and shaping. Therefore, the Titanium implants remain chemically inert and corrosion-free. Material-related damages to the tissues are almost impossible. 3. Because of the better pliability of Titanium in comparison to conventional implant steel, the Titanium rib clips and Titanium connecting bars can easily and precisely be adapted to the contour of the ribs. 4. In contrast to steel implants, Titanium implants will rebound only minimally after bending. Consequently, the rib clips can be anchored tightly to the ribs and resist loosening. 5. Allergic reactions caused by pure Titanium are extremely rare. 6. The use of pure Titanium as osteosynthesis material produces useful images on Computer- and MRI-Tomograms since Titanium reflects significantly less than steel.
