1 Resource for Dental Care A WINTER 2013 Oklahoma Statewide Listings A message to those in need of care Individuals requesting this guide typically have two issues a dental problem that cannot be ignored combined with scarce financial resources. A guide with a purpose This guide is published by the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Oral Health Foundation to: 1. Help those who cannot afford dental care find free and low-cost resources 2. Help referral sources assist those in need to find care 3. Connect free and low-cost programs to one another to leverage their limited resources and multiply their efforts and results Join our list The best way to stay current is to join our list. Each quarter we ll automatically a new issue to you. To subscribe, go to A message to our providers Thank you for your efforts to serve those in need! Please review your listing and notify us of any changes so we can update it in our next issue. Did you know our Foundation provides grants to dental health related programs that meet our criteria? Learn more at To ensure the accuracy of these listings, this document expires March 31, For the latest version, go to or call Published quarterly by: of Oklahoma Oral Health Foundation Terrisa Singleton, Foundation Manager 16 NW 63rd Street Oklahoma City, OK OKC Metro: Toll Free: ext foundation@deltadentalok.org The providers listed in this directory care about you and your situation, and they do all they can (given limited resources) to meet the tremendous need for free and low-cost dental services throughout Oklahoma. There are two types of clinics/programs listed free and low-cost. If you have some financial means, the nonprofit low-cost clinics provide dental services at lower than average or sliding scale fees and the waiting period for an appointment is short. Free clinics and programs provide services at no cost and are made possible by volunteer dental professionals and support staff. As you can well imagine, the demand for these services is great, but the supply of volunteers is limited. Patience and perseverance are keys to receiving care, because most have long waiting periods for restorative services (such as dentures and fillings). However, every effort is made to provide timely care to those in pain and at risk for infection. Calling more than one organization and becoming familiar with their processes will increase your likelihood for treatment. We sincerely hope this directory helps you find the dental care you need. Other options available for those in need Did you know that SoonerCare covers all routine and diagnostic dental costs for qualifying Oklahoma children? For information, see the SoonerCare listing in the Statewide section of this guide. If you re employed but your employer doesn t provide dental insurance, you may find s Patient Direct discount program, PPO Choice Advantage or PPO Point of Service programs to be a good option for you. For details, call (OKC Metro) or (Toll Free) or visit www. DeltaDentalOK.org. Copyright 2012 of Oklahoma. WINTER 2013 Foundation News from of Oklahoma This year marks of Oklahoma Oral Health Foundation s 15th year of supporting dental health and education programs throughout the state. We have several major announcements coming soon, beginning with the initial list of 2013 grant recipients (see page two). If you are not already following us on Facebook, please go to www. facebook.com/ddokfoundation and like our page so you ll be among the first to receive the news! Foundation Recognizes Oral Health Hero The Foundation is pleased to name D. Michael Spradlin, DDS, of Tulsa as the recipient of its first Oral Health Hero Award, a new program to recognize the contributions of volunteer dentists across the state. Spradlin was honored Dec. 17 at the Mother Teresa Dental Care Center of Catholic Charities of Tulsa where he volunteers. The Foundation s superhero, Captain Supertooth, was on hand with a spare cape to help honor his fellow Dr. Michael Spradlin and DDOK s Captain Supertooth oral health hero. After retiring from private practice, Spradlin began serving as a volunteer dentist and clinic administrator for Mother Teresa Dental Care Center. Since leading the effort to set up the clinic in 2009, he served nearly full-time administering the program, recruiting and scheduling other volunteer dentists and hygienists, and treating patients. He contributed more than 1,400 volunteer hours last year alone. Volunteer dentists are the lifeblood of charitable dentistry and our new Oral Health Hero Award is a small way for us to recognize and thank them, said John Gladden, DDOK president and CEO. Dr. Spradlin serves as a shining example of the dedication and passion of the many volunteer dentists in Oklahoma. When asked why he volunteers, Spradlin said, This morning I delivered a set of dentures for a lady. After setting and adjusting the dentures, I handed her a mirror. And she looked at herself in the mirror and tears started coming down. She cried. Donations allow us to do such things as this that are so personally rewarding for both us and the patients. It s just worth it. 1

4 Oklahoma Dental Association TWO DAYS OF FREE DENTAL CARE FOR THOSE IN NEED Feb. 1-2, 2013 Lawton, OK Great Plains Coliseum at Comanche County Fairgrounds 920 S. Sheridan Road No appointments First-come, first-served Doors open at 5AM each day Fillings, extractions, cleanings, limited root canals Dentures not available Oklahoma Mission of Mercy (OkMOM) PATIENTS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What age groups will be treated? All ages will be seen. However, dentures/partials will not be available. If I am under 18, do I need a parent or guardian present? Yes. My entire family needs to be seen. Is that possible? Yes, but all children under 18 MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian. How do I qualify? There are no qualification criteria. We will treat as many patients as we can based on the number of volunteers we have. Our goal is to treat the first 1,000 people (approx.) each day. Is there anything that would disqualify me from treatment? Each patient will undergo a simple medical exam at the start of your OkMOM experience. Some things that could prevent you from being treated include: having a fever at the time of treatment; uncontrollable, abnormally high blood pressure; or excessive bleeding in the past. Do I need insurance/payment? No. This is a completely free event. Because of the generosity of our volunteer dental professionals, we will not be filing insurance or charging patients for services performed. Can I pre-register/set an appointment? No. All OkMOM services are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. How early should I arrive at OkMOM? The doors will open at 5AM. From our previous experience we expect people to begin lining up much earlier than 5AM. Please keep the following in mind: Patients will not be allowed into the clinic building before 5AM. Line will form in a separate building. If you decide to stand in line, it may be very cold. DRESS APPROPRIATELY. Collapsible chairs, blankets, and sleeping bags will be allowed. However, you will not have a chance to return them to your car and will need to carry them with you throughout the day. No tents. Security and restrooms/portable toilets will be available. OkMOM is not responsible for lost or stolen items. What time will the clinic doors close? Once 1,000 people have entered, we will close the doors to any new patients for that day. How long will it take? Be prepared to stay all day. There is no possible way to predetermine how long it will take for an individual patient to complete the waiting and treatment process. Please note: Once you have entered the building for treatment you will not be allowed to leave and re-enter for any reason, including smoking or retrieving medication or other items from your car. What should I bring to OkMOM? We recommend the following: List of current medications; one day supply of medications; baby supplies for a full day (diapers, formula, etc.). Bring these items with you in line; do not leave them in your car. Can someone come with me while I am being treated? You are welcome to bring a friend or family member with you to OkMOM. They can stay with you while you are outside in line but we will require them to go the family/friends waiting area as soon as you enter the building. You will be able to meet them AFTER your treatment. Will breakfast/lunch be provided? We will serve free breakfast and lunch to all patients inside the clinic waiting for treatment. Food and drinks will not be allowed on the clinic floor. Will there be translators? Spanish translators; signers for the hearing impaired. Is there a limit as to how much treatment I can receive? Due to limited supplies, time and volunteers, we are limited to the amount of treatment we can provide each individual. When you enter our clinic, one of our volunteer dentists will meet with you and determine your treatment plan. Our first priority will be to treat your critical dental needs at the discretion of your dentist that day. (Dentures/partials not available. Root canals available for anterior teeth only and on a limited basis. Wisdom teeth extraction available on a limited basis.) Where do I park? There will be ample free parking designated. Please copy and distribute this flyer to those in need of dental care they cannot afford. To volunteer or for more information, go to:
