2 Biotrak Pin Since 1988, Acumed has been designing solutions to the demanding situations facing orthopaedic surgeons, hospitals and their patients. Our strategy has been to know the indication, design a solution to fit, and deliver quality products and instrumentation. The Biotrak Resorbable Pin System is the next generation in resorbable fixation. It exemplifies the continual efforts of Acumed to design advanced solutions for repairing fractures, performing joint fusions and fixing osteotomies throughout the upper and lower extremities. The Biotrak Resorbable Pin offers several advantages over conventional metallic implants. Patient comfort is improved with less soft tissue irritation from prominent hardware. This eliminates the need for subsequent removal of the implant. A gradual rate of resorption allows for an optimal transfer of support to the bone as it heals. This results in improved remodeling and healing without stress-shielding. Until now the widely recognized benefits of resorbable implants have not always matched the performance of metal implants. Acumed s Biotrak Resorbable Pin System combines advanced implant technology with straightforward cannulated instrumentation. It enables surgeons to treat fractures, fusions and osteotomies with greater efficiency and effectiveness. By combining versatility with excellent fixation, the Biotrak Pin is a great alternative to metal fixation for selected applications. Long-term surgeon feedback has allowed Acumed to develop a superior implant with innovative instrumentation to both ease the surgical technique and increase implantation accuracy. The Biotrak Pin s strength and compression provide excellent fixation while facilitating an earlier return to normal activities for patients. Key Indications Include: Injection molded from 100% poly L-lactic acid (PLLA), Biotrak Pins resorb after the bone is healed. In each application PLLA permits natural, complete bone remodeling after injury by allowing a gradual transfer of stress to the healing bone. This ultimately reduces the risk of stress shielding. 3 Biotrak Pin Features Multifaceted Design The Biotrak Pin incorporates a multifaceted fin design. This feature not only provides gripping strength to facilitate superior fixation, but the additional advantage of compression. The fins also provide protection against shear and rotational forces. Ultimately this eliminates pin protrusion and the subsequent need for removal. Cannulated to Ease Insertion The cannulated design of the Biotrak Resorbable Pin allows for a minimally invasive insertion. All instruments are specifically designed for use with the cannulated Biotrak Pin implants to facilitate quick and easy insertion of the pins. The system consists of a cannulated plunger, cannulated microdrill, cannula, single and double trocar guide wires. Radiolucent Composed of PLLA, the radiolucent ability of the Biotrak Resorbable Pin allows for a more accurate assessment of the healing process by reducing interference with imaging techniques. Headed The head on the pin allows for additional compression to achieve excellent fracture fixation. Multifaceted Fins Fin design facilitates superior fixation and compression while allowing protection against rotational forces. Resorbable The Biotrak Pin is manufactured from 100% poly L-lactic acid (PLLA). This material is completely resorbed by the body in approximately 2-5 years. Radiolucent Radiolucent capacity allows for a more accurate assessment of the healing process. Cannulation Biotrak Pins and instruments are cannulated for.035 guide wires. This facilitates accurate percutaneous and/or arthroscopic insertion.

4 Biortrak Pin STEP 1: Insert Guide Wires Insert multiple guide wires (if possible) to reduce and stabilize the fragment. Place guide wires at pin placement locations. Advance guide wire to the desired pin depth. STEP 2: Determine Pin Length Place cannula over guide wire and measure the depth by the aligned laser marks. Choose the pin length closest to determined depth. STEP 3: Drill to Depth Advance guide wire. Drill the bone through the cannula to the pin length determined in previous step (plus desired countersink depth) by aligning the laser marks on the drill and cannula. STEP 4: Insert Biotrak Pin Place pin on guide wire. Slide plunger over guide wire through cannula to advance pin. Use a mallet to tap the pin into the bone. Use the laser marks on plunger and cannula at the 30 mark to insert pin to the desired countersink depth.

5 Surgical Technique Repeat previous steps to insert additional pins if desired.
