Introduce yourself and anyone else who will be training, assisting, or observing. Trainees' self-introductions will be in icebreaker exercise below. B. Announce schedule for breaks & lunch; restroom location There will be occasionallo-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch break. Class wi II end at XXX. Restrooms are located... Turn off phones or pagers. You can make calls during your breaks. C. General comments on today's topic, agenda, format ("Learning Objectives" listed below and in student manual.) Today we will be learning about oral health and what makes it such an important part of your clients' overall health. Your clients depend on you to provide or assist with oral care on a daily basis. The things you learn today will help you teach your clients about their own oral health-things that may have a huge impact on their quality of life. You are not required to become a dental expert, but the things you learn today should help you provide better oral care and recognize unusual conditions as you provide your care. As you can see on your agenda, we will have discussions, a slide (or overhead) program with photos, hands-on practice, and a quiz. When you complete all portions of the class, including an evaluation, you will receive a certificate of attendance. Your notebook contains an outline of today's discussions, slides for the oral health section, tip sheets, and the "Oral Health Photo Guide" to help you on the job. We have done most of the notetaking for you, but feel free to make notes in your books as needed.
7 To help you with the new dental terms, you will find a vocabulary. list in the "Resources" section, Rl-l (point it out) of your workbook. Be sure to ask if you are unclear about a term, and be sure to ask your questions as we go through the material. D. Icebreaker Ask participants to introduce themselves, have them describe. their work settings and tell one thing they hope to learn today. Make a list on easel or board (and check at the end of class) to be sure all questions are covered or answered in training. Trainer - Introduction III
8 Oral Health for Caregivers Learning Objectives This course presents information to help you with the daily oral health duties within the Scope of Practice for caregivers. You will learn both the "why" and "how" of oral health problems and what to do when you see an unusual condition. You do not have to be a "dental expert" to understand this information. We hope that today's presentation will increase your knowledge of oral health issues, resulting in better oral health for your clients, for you, and for your own family. In this class you will learn about these topics: ~ What are the special oral health problems of seniors? ~ How is oral health related to overall health? [@ What are the signs of a healthy mouth? An unhealthy mouth? ~ What are the causes of tooth decay and gum disease? What is dry mouth? What can I do to prevent these problems? ~ What are the needs of clients with dentures? When should my client see a dentist? Where can I find dental care in my area? ~ What is the best way to floss and brush? ~ How do I care for a denture? [R) Which other devices can I use to keep my client's mouth healthy? ~ What happens if I notice something unusual in my client's mouth? What will I be able to do for my client? ~ How can I gain cooperation from my client? Trainer - Introduction iv
