2 Selecting the prper IC Attachment 1. The use f nly tw IC Attachments is usually recmmended. Mre than tw attachments may prvide excessive retentin. The attachment will prvide mechanical retentin and requires a rest seat that will prvide a mechanical stp (reciprcal arm n the abutment tth). 2. Size f the IC Attachment is gverned by: The vertical height f the abutment. The female is psitined apprximately 1mm belw the height f cntur (FIG A). On shrt teeth, the anterir attachment wuld be indicated. The prximal cntur f the abutment. If substantial undercuts are present due t tilted tth r a prnunced height f cntur (FIG B), it is suggested that yu d the fllwing:»reduce the prximal surface f the abutment tth until the lng IC attachments can be used. A B Fabricatin Prcedure Tth Preparatin 1. Examine the study mdel t determine the path f insertin (FIG 1). 1

3 The female shuld be psitined ver the ridge and in the center f the lng axis f the abutment tth (FIG 2); slightly belw (1mm) the survey line (FIG 3) If a substantial undercut exists (FIG 4) it may be necessary t utilize the lnger IC Attachment r pssibly re-cntur the prximal surface f the abutment tth. 4. If access t the prper psitin f the female is difficult, then place the female slightly lingually (FIG 5). NOTE: the small size f the special IC cntra-angle culd facilitate access. 5. Begin the preparatin with a #5 rund bur (FIG 6). 6. Use a small inverted cne bur t prvide slight undercuts fr cementatin (FIG 7). 7

4 Cementatin 7. The female may be cemented with cmpsite, plycarbxylate cement, r resin cement. Best results have been bserved with plycarbxylate cement. D NOT use Zinc-Oxyphsphates r ZOE cements as they have prven t be nn-cmpatible with the IC ally T simplify handling f the IC female during cementatin, heat sme gutta percha and place it int the cavity f the female. With a warmed ball burnisher, pick up and seat the female in the preparatin (FIG 8). 9. Hld the female in place with a mylar strip until the cement sets. 10. When the female is seated prperly, there shuld nt be any metal extensins beynd the tth's cntur (FIG 9). NOTE: If the female is t be cemented int a cast crwn, use the sizing bur and inverted cne bur by hand in the wax pattern t create a recess fr the female. After casting, refine the recess and cement the female int the crwn fllwing steps 7-10 under "Cementatin." Partial Denture Fabricatin 11. Prir t taking the impressin fr the master mdel, adapt a small amunt f impressin material int the female (alginate is nt recmmended). Wipe ff any excess material befre seating the impressin tray. This will ensure an accurate reprductin f the female in the mdel. The same technique shuld be fllwed when making the refractry mdel.

5 The IC Attachment eliminates facial clasps. Retentin is prvided by the attachment. Hwever, in free-end saddle situatins, the abutment tth must have a 180º reciprcal actin (nn-retentive) lingual clasp (FIG 10). CAUTION: One f the three illustrated basic designs is necessary t maintain the prper psitin f the plunger D nt slder the male t the partial denture framewrk. The male shuld be retained and supprted in the partial denture by resin nly. Hwever, the framewrk can be waxed t include struts r lps arund the male (FIG 11). The area behind and immediately gingival t the male shuld be kept free frm the framewrk. This will allw access fr adjustments r repairs at a future time. 14. If the framewrk design shwn (in Fig 11) is desired, the fllwing prcedure is recmmended: a. Prepare the master mdel fr duplicatin b. On the master mdel, psitin the male perpendicular t the female with the plunger f the male passively engaging the female (n cmpressin f the plunger). With the male in this psitin, lute the plunger t the female with sticky wax. The sticky wax shuld als serve t blck ut the plunger area. Blck ut the area beneath the male cylinder (FIG 12), then take the impressin fr the refractry mdel. c. Pur the refractry mdel. The resulting representatin f the male will allw the framewrk t be waxed as desired. d. Cast and finish the frame in a rutine manner. e. Psitin the finished frame back n the master mdel. f. With the male in passive psitin and the plunger blcked ut, secure the male t the frame with self-curing acrylic. There shuld be n vids in the acrylic behind the male. Such vids culd allw the male t slide away frm the female. g. Cmplete set-up and try in. h. Prir t prcessing, blck ut the plunger f the male with Rubber Sep. i. Cmplete prcessing in a rutine manner. Optin using plastic husing--lute the plunger t the plastic husing. Remve the plunger and cast the framewrk with plastic husing. Cld cure the plunger int the prsthesis using the cast husing

6 If the struts and lps (FIG 11) are nt t be fabricated, the fllwing prcedure is recmmended: a. On the refractry mdel, the framewrk is waxed such that the area gingival t and behind the intended psitin f the male is free frm framewrk cnstructin. b. The frame is cast and finished in a rutine manner. c. With the finished frame n the master mdel, psitin the male perpendicular t the female with the plunger f the male passively engaging the female (n cmpressin f the plunger). With the male in this psitin, lute the plunger t the female with sticky wax. The sticky wax shuld als serve t blck ut the plunger area. d. Secure the male t the frame with self-curing acrylic. There shuld be n vids in the acrylic behind the male. Such vids culd allw the male t slide away frm the female. e. Cmplete set-up and try in. f. Blck ut the plunger f the male using Rubber Sep. g. Cmplete prcessing in a rutine manner. Rebasing 1. Vaseline r a similar lubricant can be used ver the male plunger t aid in insertin and remval. 2. When taking a rutine wash impressin, guide the patient t a passive clsure. When seated, the rest(s) shuld indicate the riginal passive psitin f the partial. 3. Remve any excess f impressin material frm arund the male plunger. 4. Blck ut the plunger using Rubber Sep prir t rebasing. 5. Rebase in a rutine manner. Servicing 1. Retentin adjustments r replacement f the male can be dne in the labratry r chairside. 2. Adjustments fr retentin are made by psitining the male frwards (t increase retentin) r backwards (t decrease retentin). This is dne by remving the acrylic behind the male and repsitining the male as desired. Applicatin f heat t the acrylic in the area f the male will facilitate repsitining. 3. Fill the vid behind the male with self-curing acrylic. 4. The same prcedure is used when the male is t be replaced with a new male attachment. T0012.REV.00
