2 Schl Walk fr Diabetes gives schls, students, and crdinatrs a chance t make a difference WHAT IS DIABETES? After yu have eaten yur fd, yur small intestine takes ut the sugar, r glucse, and puts it in yur bld. The glucse is what gives yur cells energy t d their jbs. T get int the cells, the glucse needs insulin. Insulin is a hrmne made by the pancreas. It wrks like a key t pen the cells and let the glucse in. Withut insulin, the cells wuld nt get fed. Diabetes is a disease where the bdy either des nt prduce enugh insulin r the insulin it prduces is nt used prperly. In type 1 diabetes, the bdy destrys its wn insulin-prducing cells in the pancreas. Peple with type 1 diabetes must inject insulin several times per day t stay healthy. Peple with type 2 diabetes may be able t manage their diabetes with diet and exercise alne, r with diet and exercise cmbined with ral medicatins and/r insulin. Yu can als read success stries frm ther schls and use the FUNd-raising Lcker t help students create persnal Web pages and send s t friends and family asking fr their supprt. Recruit an assistant r vlunteer cmmittee. This can make an incredible difference in making the event easier t implement. Yur team can help with setting a fund-raising gal, pre-event planning and prmtin, event day lgistics and pst-event paperwrk. The cmmittee can cnsist f ther faculty members, parents r student leaders. Set a fund-raising gal. Explre the U.S. Games Web site at t make a wish list f physical educatin equipment and/r schl medical supplies that yur schl culd benefit frm. Add up the ttal cst and use this wish list as the basis fr yur fund-raising gal. Remember, yur schl can earn up t 15 percent back fr yur wish list. Determine event frmat. The event frmat is yur decisin. Sme schls break dwn the event thrughut the day int class activities held in the gym r n a schl track. This allws fr a mre efficient walk and fr mre educatinal mments alng the way. If yur event is scheduled near the end f the schl year, hst yur fund-raising campaign at least six weeks earlier s students can get their gifts n event day. T determine an event frmat that is best fr yur schl, cnsider: The number f students r grades participating The layut fr the event, such as schl assembly, class activity r cmmunity-wide event The best event lcatin, such as gym, track r schl neighbrhd The length f the walking rute and the time needed t cmplete it Schedule the event date. Set a date at least six weeks prir t the end f the schl year. Once yu have a date, get apprval frm yur principal! Then call yur lcal ADA representative! Develp a prmtin plan.
