3 INVITATION COMMITTEES Dear friends and colleagues, We are very pleased to welcome you to the 4 th London-Innsbruck Colloquium on Status Epilepticus and Acute Seizures, which will be held in Salzburg from April 4 6, The previous colloquia (London 2007, Innsbruck 2009, and Oxford 2011) were highly successful, and these biannual colloquia have become a popular feature of the international epilepsy calendar. The meetings have successfully rekindled interest in Status Epilepticus, and have followed in direct lineage the traditions of the Marseilles Colloquium held in 1962 and the two Santa Monica meetings on this topic held in 1980 and This fourth colloquium will be held in the beautiful surroundings of Salzburg, and will bring together scientists, academics and clinicians in what will be a most innovative and exciting programme. The conference will focus on current basic and clinical research in status epilepticus, clinical aspects and new therapies with the aim of stimulating thought and discussion and improving treatment and outcome in this devastating condition. We do hope you will be able to attend and we look forward to personally welcoming you to what should be an instructive, interesting and enjoyable event. With best wishes Eugen Trinka and Simon Shorvon Colloquium Chairs Eugen TRINKA, Salzburg, Austria Simon SHORVON, London, United Kingdom Faculty Aigner Ludwig, Austria Battaglia Giorgio, Italy Bauer Gerhard, Austria Baulac Michel, France Baumgartner Christoph, Austria Beniczky Sándor, Denmark Bharucha Nadir E., India Bialer Meir, Israel Bleck Tom, United States Blümcke Ingmar, Germany Boison Detlef, United States Cash Sidney, United States Cock Hannah, United Kingdom Cole Andrew, United States Cross Helen, United Kingdom Dalmau Josep, United States Ferlisi Monica, Italy Feucht Martha, Austria Helbok Raimund, Austria Henshall David, Ireland Hirsch Lawrence, United States Hocker Sara, United States Hussain Aatif, United States Janigro Damir, United States Kaplan Peter, United States Kapur Jaideep, United States Kellinghaus Christoph, Germany Kramer Günther, Switzerland Kullmann Dimitri, United Kingdom Leppik Ilo E., United States Loddenkemper Tobias, United States Lowenstein Daniel, United States Mott David, United States Nabbout Rima, France Newton Charles, Kenya Perucca Emilio, Italy Pitkänen Asla, Finland Pressler Ronit, United Kingdom Rogawski Mike, United States Rossetti Andrea, Switzerland Schmutzhard Erich, Austria Singh Gagandeep, United Kingdom Silbergleit Robert, United States Walker Matthew, United Kingdom Wasterlain Claude, United States Wijdicks Eelco, United States Winkler Peter A., Austria 4

Politically, Austria is a democratic republic with the prime minister as the head of the government and parliamentary elections every five years. The formal head of state is the president, who has more representative duties than political power. The country is divided into nine federal states; Salzburg is the capital of the same named state (Salzburg). German is the spoken language, but most Austrians speak English, and third languages like French and Italian are very common. Austrians pride themselves with their hospitality, cuisine and traditions. LOCAL TIME: GMT +1 About Salzburg Salzburg has acquired international fame as city of Mozart and the Salzburg Festival. But it might also interest you to know that Salzburg is capital to the province of the same name and that it is home to 150,000 inhabitants, making it the fourth largest city in Austria. Salzburg s compact layout is one of the city s most attractive features. Vital transport hubs such as the train station and W. A. Mozart International Airport are all within easy reach, which help to make Salzburg the perfect event destination. Salzburg is known for being the city of Mozart. It sits on either side of the Salzach River and in the Salzburg basin. The city was re-founded as a bishopric on Roman ruins (Iuvavum). Salzburg achieved immense wealth from mining and trading of salt. It became a bishopric residence of architectural splendour during the reigns of Wolf Dietrich and his successors. The city of Salzburg - and especially its historic city centre is in fact one of the loveliest places in Europe, winning international acclaim in 1997 when it was designated a world heritage site by UNESCO. The Old City with its variety of building styles is a true architectural delight, also a result of the city s strict preservation laws. A walk through the countless narrow streets (the most famous being the Getreidegasse, Judengasse, Goldgasse, Kaigasse, Linzergasse and Steingasse) features buildings from the Middle Ages, Romanesque, Baroque and Renaissance periods as well as the elegant classical burghers houses dating from the monarchy. 16
10 Hardly any age failed to leave its architectural imprint on Salzburg. Since much of the Old City is a pedestrian zone and relatively small, it is ideal for walking and window shopping it only takes about 20 minutes to walk from Nonntal (the southern end) to Mülln (the northern end). Those in a hurry can take a taxi whereas those with time to spare can indulge in a Fiaker ride, an oldtime horse and buggy creation, for a leisurely tour of the city. The city s most famous squares include Residence Square with its splendid fountain, the neighbouring Old Market, University Square, as well as Mozart Square with the memorial of the city s genius loci. Language The official language of the congress is English. No simultaneous interpretation facilities will be provided during the conference. TRAVEL TO SALZBURG Salzburg Airport can be reached from all venues in the city of Salzburg quickly and easily. Munich Airport is located only 180 kilometres from the city of Salzburg. And also the perfect train and motorway connections ensure a smooth arrival. By plane Salzburg s W. A. Mozart Airport is located only four kilometres from the city centre, a fifteen minute journey by taxi or bus. Used by many international airlines and low-cost carriers, Salzburg is directly accessible from cities such as Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hannover, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn, Frankfurt, Leipzig- Halle, Amsterdam, Vienna, Paris, London, Manchester, Stockholm, and Zurich. As well as its own airport, Salzburg is also connected to Munich Airport by shuttle bus. Official Carrier Austrian Airlines has been nominated official carrier for our Colloquium. Book your online on and save 15% on all applicable fares! To do so, simply enter the following code in the evoucher/gutschein field on the Austrian homepage booking engine: LON13 Terms and Conditions: Booking period: from now until April 6, 2013 Valid for flights to Salzburg and/or Vienna and return as of March 28, 2013 until April 13, 2013 (final date for return flight) on OS flight numbers. By train Salzburg main railway station is located in direct proximity to the conference venue (300m) and at a 15 min walk from the city centre. Being close to the German border means that, Salzburg has outstanding Eurocity, Intercity and ICE connections to cities across Europe. You can also catch a local or suburban train to Salzburg from most towns in the region, As a border station to Germany, it has an important role and excellent Euro- City, Intercity and ICE connections to Austria s neighbouring countries. By car 18 The Western motorway from Vienna (A1) and Tauern motorway (A10) from southern Austria as well as the motorway coming from Munich (A8) connect the city of Salzburg and all regions of Salzburg. All venues and hotels in the city and province of Salzburg can be reached by car. Please remember to purchase a toll sticker if you drive to Salzburg by car. For further information please see:
