The Profession of Athle/c Training Kate Ihle, ATC, NASM-PES
My background I grew up on a farm in Plaza, North Dakota. I graduated in 2011 from North Dakota State University with a bachelors of science in AthleEc Training degree. I have been an athleec trainer for EssenEa Health in Detroit Lakes, MN area for 5.5 years. I do high school outreach to two rural high schools. I am currently working on an MBA with an emphasis in healthcare management from Minnesota State University Moorhead.
What is an Athle/c Trainer?
What everyone thinks...
Defini/on AthleEc trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, muleskilled health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventaeve services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeuec interveneon and rehabilitaeon of injuries and medical condieons. AthleEc trainers work under the direceon of a physician as prescribed by state licensure statutes. (NaEonal AthleEc Trainers AssociaEon, 2016)
What it actually means... AthleEc Trainers can provide a variety of services. Injury evaluaeons PreventaEve taping or bracing RehabilitaEon of injuries Emergency sports care (spine boarding, CPR/AED) First aid Expedited referral to see appropriate physician or healthcare provider. Contact person to answer queseons by student, parent, coach, or healthcare provider
Tradi/onal Job SeIng I currently work in two high schools. Both are small, so I split my Eme between them. High school, college, or professional athleecs are tradieonal se[ngs to find an athleec trainer.
Emerging SeIngs for Athle/c Trainers Military Performance Arts Ballet companies, Cirque Du Soleil Industrial/Manufacturing Caterpillar, John Deere Physicians Office Physician extender, CasEng, DME specialist OccupaEonal Health/Public Safety Police StaEons, Amazon Healthcare AdministraEon Running various departments in a clinic/hospital
Working Environment/Condi/ons AthleEc training room office with supplies and tools to do treatments Court, Mat, Field, Gym, Ice, Team/Season Dependent Weather CondiEons Football Outside, might be 100 degrees, raining, snowing, or -20 degrees. Wrestling Si[ng in a wrestling room or gym Soaball similar condieons to football Hockey on ice or in the box
Educa/on/Training AthleEc Trainers require either a Bachelors Degree in AthleEc Training or an Entry Level Masters Degree in AthleEc Training Upon graduaeon, graduates must sit for a naeonal board of cereficaeon examinaeon. It is a computerized 4 hour exam. Aaer passing the board of cereficaeon exam, paperwork must be filed to work in the desired state of pracece. Every state is different on state licensure.
What is a typical day? This is always a fun queseon, because there truly is no one answer for this. Everyday is different pending Eme of year, pracece Eme, game Emes, weather, number of injured athletes, etc... It s very possible to have a 4 hour work day and a 12 hour work day in the same week. Usually working hours are early mornings, late aaernoons, evenings, and weekends.
Example Day 8am Noon Clinic/AdministraEon Time Reply to s, communicate with parents and physicians about paeents, schedule appointments, plan schedules for the week/upcoming events, finish up any documentaeon 2pm 10pm Secondary School Time Prepare athletes for praceces/games, athlete treatments, communicate any athlete injuries/limitaeons for the day with coaches, afend praceces or games scheduled for the day, documentaeon *No day is the same. If one team praceces before school for the day, then my day is more divided. Or if no games are scheduled for that evening, then I m done when praceces are done. If I ve completed all my of administraeon items early in the week, or its a slow week, my mornings are very open.
Salary This can vary greatly depending on... Se[ng of work professional athleecs vs high school Region of the country I m not ge[ng paid what an athleec trainer in New York City is ge[ng due to cost of living differences. OrganizaEon worked for Different organizaeons pay very differently NATA Salary Survey gives the best prediceons hfp:// post-a-job/25th-percenele
Pros and Cons Pros Ge[ng to see athletes perform at their best Ge[ng courtside/ sideline views of every event When an athlete says thank you for helping me Cons The Hours so varied The pay you don t become an AT expeceng to make bank So much paperwork/ documentaeon
How is Athle/c Training different from Exercise Science or Physical Therapy? Exercise science majors typically go on to be personal trainers. Think weight loss, strength programs, and working in gyms. Physical Therapists work with individuals post surgery to return to normal movement and strength in a joint or body part. They also can correct posture and muscle imbalances with treatments and exercise. They are in a clinic se[ng.
What Classes To Take Now To Prepare Science, Science, More Science Anatomy/Biology/Chemistry/Physics Math Algebra/Geometry/Trigonometry Public Speaking Speech/English
Why did I become an Athle/c Trainer? I really enjoy sports...i m super compeeeve. I wanted to conenue that love of sports aaer high school. I also was very interested in medicine. I thought about being a nurse, doctor, and physical therapist before realizing athleec training could put my two interests together. I get a sideline/courtside view to every sporeng event I cover, doesn t get much befer than that.
Ques/ons?
