Dance Dance revolution Released in North America in 1998 Uses music, video and a dance pad. The player follows a pre-set pattern stepping in time to the rhythm Has been used in schools for aerobic exercise Can involve significant joint compression
Wii Sport Released in North America in 2006 Designed to use a new form of player interaction from sedentary video games Uses a remote controller that can sense the movement of a players hand. Starting to be used in rehabilitation Primarily uses upper limbs for activity
Wii Fit Released in Japan in 2007 and other markets in 2008 Part of the Wii system Uses a balance board peripheral for yoga, balance games, strength training and aerobics
Reasons we chose the Wii FIT Recent media visibly Marketing for weight loss and fitness Newest on the market of interactive video games Possible use for rehabilitation
It is marketed to promotes fitness and weight reduction which is important for improving BMI. It may not only address general health but may also address joint health by working on balance, strength and flexibility in addition to BMI. But is it safe and beneficial for use with the hemophilia population?
Is The Wii Fit useful for improving the general fitness and joint health of our clients? Can it be useful in the rehabilitation post intra-articular or intra-muscular bleed? We unfortunately are not able to answer these questions but will present our ideas and theories based on our use of the system.
Range of motion Strength Proprioception Muscle balance and/ or imbalance Flexibility Soft tissue contracture
Posture Persistent joint or muscle swelling Balance Ligament Integrity

Wii FIT It is an exercise game developed by Nintendo consisting of activities utilizing a peripheral balance board. Training on the Wii fit is divided into four different categories: Yoga, strength training, aerobics and balance games. New games or activities can be unlocked based on the number of minutes per activity.

No real monitoring of quality of movement False sense of feedback for some exercises System can be tricked Accuracy is unknown BMI is based on adult standards People with joint problems may have difficulty assuming some of the positions
Entertaining Game monitors your participation Holds you accountable Participate with your family Can monitor BMI over time Many of the activities are comparable with balance exercise for PT No high impact activities Alternative for persons who do not exercise
We are not advocating the use of the Wii Fit for rehabilitation or weight control for persons with hemophilia but rather wanted to investigate it due to it s recent popularity It appears to have benefits but further investigation would be needed It does not substitute for physical therapy or regular exercise.
Comparative energy expenditure between sedentary and new generation video games. Study in published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in Jul male and 5 females between the ages of used a monitoring device to measure energy expenditure. Compared X-box 360 to three different Wii games: bowling, tennis and boxing. They concluded that playing new generation video games used significantly more energy than sedentary video game but less than the sport. The energy used in the Wii sport was not of high enough intensity to contribute toward the recommended daily amount of exercise in children.
The Contribution of Upper Limb and Total Body Movement to Adolescence Energy Expenditure Whilst Playing Nintendo Wii. European Journal of Applied Physiology July Energy expenditure, heart rate, upper body and total body movement were assessed in 6 girls and 7 boys ages11-17 years old while playing X-Box 360 and three Wii Sport games: Bowling, tennis and boxing.
Non-dominant upper extremity use, energy expenditure and heart rate were significantly higher during Wii boxing than tennis and bowling. For all active games hip activity best predicted energy expenditure. The physiologic cost of upper body oriented active video games increased when movement in both upper limb was encouraged.
