8 TEACHING Classes Taught Currently at Western Illinois University Cardiorespiratory Physiology (KIN 566:Graduate) A study of cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory physiology and their relationship to disease and disease prevention. Identification of the various risk factors and strategies for disease intervention. This course is designed to prepare students for certification with the American College of Sports Medicine at the level of exercise test technologist or exercise specialist. Exercise Stress Testing (KIN 440) This course is designed to provide an in-depth study of the theories, concepts, procedures, and techniques of exercise stress testing. Physiology of Exercise (KIN 391) A study of the physiological responses to exercise including acute effects, training adaptations, and health related benefits. Specific topics covered include exercise metabolism, neurological and endocrine regulation of exercise, cardiovascular and respiratory physiology, environmental influences, and ergogenic aids. At Texas A&M International Univerisy 2006-present Advanced Exercise Physiology (EDFS 5301:Graduate) This course is an in-depth study of physiological aspects of exercise. The physiological adaptations occurring with acute and chronic training, different environmental conditions and disuse will be discussed. Exercise and Chronic Disease (EDFS 5307:Graduate) This course presents an overview of the benefits of fitness and exercise programs for special population. The goal is to introduce a variety of special populations and discuss the ways in which exercise may benefit these individuals. Emphasis will be placed on the physiological benefits of regular physical activity. Exercise Physiology (EDFS 3300) This course provides a continuation of basic and advanced exercise physiology principles intending to develop student s knowledge of the physiology of human performance, energy metabolism, physiological responses and adaptations during and after exercise the environment on physical performance. Adapted Physical Activity (EDFS 4305) The course deals with the identification of problems within the psychomotor domain and the development of strategies for remediating these problems. Page 8 of 10

9 First Aid and CPR (EDFS 2325) This course trains students in American Red Cross First Aid/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation(CPR)/Automated External Defibrillation (AED) procedures, including ways to prevent back injuries, heart attacks, slips, trips, falls, and workplace violence. Also emphasized are ergonomics and stress management. Upon completion of the course, student will earn a three-year American Red Cross First Aid/AED certificate and a oneyear CPR certificate. Athletic Training (EDFS 2303) This course introduces the student to the basics of Athletic Training. The student will learn prevention, care, and evaluation of athletic injuries. Taping, bracing, environmental stress, etc will be discussed. Health and Movement (EDFS 2316) This course introduces the student to the development and process of movement skill acquisition in children and methods to provide movement and health practices in the classroom. Other classes taught Exercise Physiology Laboratory Responsibilities: Gave hands-on instruction over materials that coincided with the lecture portion of the class including properties of skeletal muscle strength, evaluation of anaerobic and aerobic capacity, thermoregulation during exercise, lung capacity, glucose response to exercise, body composition, blood pressure measurement, estimation of maximal aerobic capacity, and physical fitness assessment Beginning Tennis Responsibilities: Prepared syllabus and lesson plans, gave instruction on tennis technique, wrote quizzes and exams, and assigned grades Exercise for Fitness Responsibilities: Prepared syllabus, lead exercises, lectured, wrote quizzes and exams, and assigned grades Beginning Racquetball Responsibilities: Composed syllabi, prepared lesson plans, and taught basic racquetball skills of stroke, serving, and wall play Advanced Racquetball Responsibilities: Composed syllabi, prepared lesson plans, and helped to refine racquetball skills. Introduced advanced skills, strategy and free ball plays. Page 9 of 10

10 Exercise Physiology Responsibilities: Lectured on topics including skeletal muscle contraction, exercise and environmental conditions, glucose response to exercise, and development of coronary heart disease. Wrote quizzes and exams, and assigned grades. Text: Brooks, G. A., T. D. Fahey & T. P. White (1996). Exercise Physiology(2nd Ed.).Mountain View, California: Mayfield Publishing Company Exercise Testing and Prescription Programming Responsibilities: Presented lectures and laboratory experiences on pre-exercise screening, common assessment procedures for components of fitness, interpretation of the assessments and their use in prescribing exercise programs for apparently healthy individuals as well as special populations. Discussed normal and abnormal responses to acute and chronic cardiovascular and resistance training exercise. Text: American College of Sports Medicine. ACSM s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription Philadelphia: Lipincott Williams & Wilkins. Page 10 of 10
