(Drafting Article). Marcus Manalo, Master's Thesis Committee Chair, "The relationship between motor skill proficiency and physical activity levels - accounting for the mediating effect of exercise identity," Health, Exercise, & Sport Sciences. (Drafting Article). "Balance Impairment and Motor Development Delay in Early Childhood" (Writing Results). Motor skills of young children, are assessed to determine if they are at-risk for motor-delay, and test if balance is an underlying mechanism that helps explain sub-par performance. The relationship between balance and performance in motor skills was subsequently be explored. "Balance Skills of Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder" (Writing Results). This study investigates differences in mechanisms (sensory contributions) underlying posture and behavior (balance recovery and force regulation) between young children (7-14 years) with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) both on and off medication, and typically developing (TD) children. It examines the relationship between balance performance under various sensory conditions and functional motor skills of typical and atypical children alike. "Influence of attentional focus on the learning and performance of a balance task in children and college-aged adults" (Writing Results). "Motor Skill Development of Children At-risk for Obesity" (Writing Results). This study describes the fundamental motor skills of a group of children identified as at-risk of being overweight/obese and explores the relationship between body composition and motor performance. "The Effect of Training on the Development of Throwing in Young Latino and African American Children" (Writing Results). Effects of a three week training program on developmental changes in throwing components (humerus, forearm) and ball velocity among young Latino and African-American (lower SES) children were investigated. "The Relationship between Balance and Fundamental Motor Skills in Early Childhood" (Writing Results). The study explores the relationship between balance and fundamental motor skills in young children. Focus is on low SES group in the community (Lubbock), and investigates the impact of body weight (BMI) on motor and balance skills. Research Interests Fundamental motor skills and balance mechanisms of typically developing children as well as those with motor deficits: including children with cerebral palsy, ADHD, and those at risk for obesity.
