ACADEMIC SENATE ITEMS The Policy for Temporary Suspension of Courses was approved to be forwarded to the Academic Senate with one correction. Discussion Items No items to review Action Items 1. Policy for Temporary Suspension of Courses The Policy for Temporary Suspension of Courses will be discussed at the Academic Senate meeting on November 20, VIII. ANNOUNCEMENTS Meena Singhal, Dean of Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and the Library was introduced. Family statements may be included on courses in Art, Dance, Kinesiology, Music and Theatre. Family statements will include courses from the Santiago Canyon College (SCC) catalog; courses not offered at SCC will not be listed. Within the Rancho Santiago Community College District, a student can make four attempts at a family of courses; W (Withdrawal), D (Passing, less than satisfactory), and F (Failing) are considered attempts. Craig Rutan will work with Monica Porter from Santa Ana College to ensure that family statements are built correctly in Datatel. When grouping courses into a family, faculty are asked to review course content and consider how it may be similar or differ between courses. The Joint Curriculum and Instruction Handbook will be available the first Curriculum and Instruction Council meeting in the spring. The Board of Trustees meeting will take place at Santiago Canyon College on October 22, 2012 at 4:30pm. A reception will precede the meeting in SC 105. Cindy Swift and Nahla El Said will be presenting to the Board on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Craig Rutan, Danni Martino, Corinna Evett and Michael DeCarbo attended the Area D meeting at San Jacinto. Meetings next spring and fall will take place at San Bernardino Valley College and Imperial Valley College respectively. Issues discussed that may impact SCC include: Curriculum created by grants does not have to go through the curriculum approval process. It is important to develop a process that includes grants.

24 Page 24 of 41 Course Identification Numbering System (CI D) deals with course to course articulation. Hopefully, CID descriptors will be articulated to General Education Breadth. A greater emphasis is being placed on major preparation. Typically, the first courses cancelled are the ones with the lowest enrollment and these tend to be major prep courses. It is important to educate all college faculty and staff on the importance of major preparation at all community colleges. Apprenticeship courses and programs will be included on the next agenda. Jamie Robison will be at the Curriculum and Instruction Council meeting to present and answer questions regarding Apprenticeship Carpentry. Guests representing some of the other trades may also be in attendance. November 19, 2012 is the last agenda for first readings. Please be sure to get your courses and programs in the technical queue within two weeks or they will not make it on to this year s agendas. The Quadrennial list for 2013 will go out in December Please keep in mind that the deadline for 2013 quadrennials will be May Santa Ana College (SAC) approved that the routing of courses going through the curriculum approval process will cease beginning spring The meeting was adjourned at 3:45pm.

26 Handouts Page 26 of 41 Policy for Temporary Suspension of Courses The colleges of the Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD) strive to offer a complete schedule of courses that is reflective of all of the items listed in each college s catalog. Unfortunately, there may be circumstances that do not permit the offering of courses for an extended period of time. To ensure that students are provided with the most accurate information possible, courses that will not be offered for at least two (2) years will be marked as on hiatus until with an end date listed. The procedure for establishing hiatus status for courses is as follows: 1. Either an administrator (Division Dean or Vice President of Academic Affairs) or a discipline faculty (Department Chair or Coordinator) makes a formal request of the college s Curriculum and Instruction Council to temporarily suspend a course or group of courses in a specific discipline. This request needs to be shared with all affected groups (department chair, discipline faculty, and the division dean) prior to the submission to the Curriculum and Instruction Council. The following items must be included in the request: a. Courses that will be temporarily suspended. b. List of programs where these courses are listed. c. Rationale for why these courses are being temporarily suspended. d. Date when the Curriculum and Instruction Council will review the suspension to return the courses to active status. e. Affirmation that students may take other available courses if the courses designated for suspension status are needed to complete a program. 2. The Curriculum and Instruction Council will review the request to determine whether this temporary suspension will prevent students from completing a program of study. If an approved program of study cannot be completed without the proposed courses, the request for suspension will be denied. 3. If any state approved program drops below 18 units without the courses that have been submitted for temporary suspension, then the request will be denied. 4. Once the request is approved, the college catalog will add on hiatus until at the end of the catalog entry for each course that has been suspended and in each of the programs in which that course is listed. 5. A two year suspension may be extended for one year for a maximum suspension of three years. After three years, the courses must be reinstated or permanently removed from the college catalog. 6. Suspension is not allowed for an entire program of study. If an entire program is being considered for suspension, please refer to the Program Discontinuance Policy listed in AR6134.
