4 Postgraduate Programmes This department is a one of the leading training centres for in-service training programme in MD Radiology conducted by PGIM. Contact Information Tel radkandy@gmail.com Objectives Clinical Appointment in Radiology - Peradeniya (24 hours/ per month x 6 months 144 hours) At the end of this appointment the students should be able to, 1. describe the imaging modalities available and state the indications, advantages and disadvantages of each modality. 2. describe the preparation of patients for various imaging modalities and different imaging examinations, such as Ultrasound scan, abdomen & pelvis, Barium enema, Angiogram and IVU. 3. Fill up all the cages of a requisition form of a radiological examinations. 4. Identify the anatomical structures of chest radiograph (PA & Lateral) and assess the cardiac size. 5. Identify a normal CXR from abnormal CXR. 6. Interpret common CXR abnormalities such as cardiomegaly, pneumonic consolidation, Pleural effusion, lung collapse, pneumothorax, bronchial neoplasm (primary & metastatic), atrial/ ventricular septal defect, heart failure, pericardial effusion, pulmonary tuberculosis. 7. Interpret common AXR abnormalities such as intestinal obstruction, perforation of bowel. 8. State the indications for Ultrasound examinations from head to toe and describe and identify common abnormalities such as renal or gall bladder calculi, hydronephrosis, liver metastases, lymphadenopathy, IUP, uterine fibroids and adnexal mass. 4
5 9. Identify radiological anatomy of vascular system and describe common pathologies such as stenosis, occlusion, aneurysm or arteriovenous malformation. 10. Describe common abnormalities seen on IVU such as calculi, hydronephrosis and carcinoma, polyps on barium enema and barium swallow examinations. 11. State the applications and limitations of various imaging modalities available for diagnosis of human diseases. Teaching, learning stratergies to achieve the above objectives - 1. Small assignments / learning activities students will find out the information of various investigations carried out in the department of radiology under the heading such as indications (by taking a brief history and clinical and biochemical results on BHT/ clinic notes), preparation, procedure, findings, complications under the guidance and supervision. The above results are taken down by the students and will be corrected by the teacher. Above will be followed by a group discussion to consolidate the knowledge gained and shared among the whole group. 2. Small group discussion on selected topics identified by the teacher or as requested by the students. 3. Undertaking assignments such as measurement of cardiothoracic ratio on Chest X-ray, filling up dummy X-ray requisition forms, entering reports of patients under going Ultrasound examinations to familiarize with the terminology in department record books, which are written and signed by the registrar or the specialist. 4. Writing up few reports of X rays with common abnormalities such as pneumonia, cardiomegaly, heart failure, intestinal obstruction, perforation, renal calculi etc. to consolidate the knowledge acquired, under the strict supervision of the teacher. 5. Film viewing sessions on selected topics in the department of Radiology. Assessment At the end of the module, an OSPE will be conducted to evaluate the knowledge gained. Dr. P.B.
