48 th Annual General Meeting The 48 th AGM was held on 30 th May 2012 at Nanyang Polytechnic. Quorum was reached and Mr Dinesh Verma gave a presentation on SCORES program: An Innovative spinal pain management programme. The AGM proceeded after the presentation and various committees from the council 2010/12 rounded up by sharing their work for FY The climax of the AGM was the election for the next council, the election was carried out smoothly and a new council was formed. Read on to find out your new council members. Message from the outgoing President Dear friends and colleagues, I am sure that you have heard by now that with the last AGM, a new council has been formed. I would like to use the opportunity as the outgoing president to thank every single one of you on behalf of my council. Special thanks to those who have supported our association during our term in office. We believe that like us, you share the undying belief that a strong association is necessary to keep our beloved profession and community moving forward in Singapore. A new council brings with it fresh ideas and vigour and I hope you will show the new council even more support for the initiatives and programs that they will be organising. Finally, the Congress is just around the corner and I warmly invite you to join us in the biggest event of our local Physiotherapy calendar. It has been my honour to serve you and no matter where I am and what I do, I will never forget the opportunity that you have given me to lead the profession that I so love. Yours sincerely, Hsien Chih Out going President Singapore Physiotherapy Association 2
Message from the new President Dear Members As you may be aware that we concluded the election of the New working council for SPA during the last held AGM on 30 May I take this opportunity to communicate with you as the newly appointed President of Singapore Physiotherapy Association. Although I may not have been taking a front line active role with SPA during the past few years but working with SPA and supporting its activities has always been in the background. Having served the SPA during the past decades as Council member, Hon Treasurer and Hon Secretary to the association I am well familiar with our combined vision and Scope. Myself and my team will work hard to meet these defined objectives. During the term, we will try to bring some Positive changes and I hope that will give greater strength to the Association. We shall be spending next six weeks to take over the responsibilities from exiting committee members and soon will roll into action. One immediate key challenge will be to increase the membership. As without members, Association has no existence. TOGETHERNESS IS STRENGTH. Our new council, as you may review at the SPA website, is a good mix of young and Senior Professionals. This will provide great energy to the functioning of council that has some uphill tasks ahead while being guided by senior members in the council. Next two years will be Challenging and exciting for us. We are planning for the National congress to be held in Sept 2012 and in 2014, we shall be celebrating 50 years of SPA. I would invite entire Physio community to stand together and celebrate this great moment. I also thank the members of the outgoing council who served the term for the past two years with full dedication and commitment and special thanks to Mr Low Hsien Chih, Past President who graciously accepted to be still part of the new team and will continue to function as Hon Secretary to the Association. I request all the members to come forward with full support to the association, its activities, its cause as SPA is for us and our combined benefits. Yours Sincerely, Dinesh Verma President Singapore Physiotherapy Association 3

Know your Council members This is the first of the 3 series that we are featuring Know your council members. This issue we introduce the executive committee of the council also known as the exco. The Exco as slated in the Association Constitution is made up of the President, Vice President, Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer. The Exco oversees the operations, plans and directions of the Association. Mr Dinesh Verma President ( ) Singapore Physiotherapy Association Editor: Hi Dinesh, congratulations and welcome on board to serve as the president of the Association. Can you tell us more about yourself? Dinesh: I m a physiotherapist and I ve gone into business and management. I m currently the Chairman of V2U Healthcare and a director of Physio Asia Therapy Centre (Singapore). I used to serve as a exco member of the Association in the 90s, I stepped down and focus on developing my business and now I m back again. Editor: Can you tell us why do you want to come forward to serve as the president? Dinesh: The nomination came as a surprise, but deep down there is this push to come forward to serve. The profession has given me much and I think it s apt to come forward to contribute to the growth of the Association and the profession. Editor: How can you serve as the president to your best abilities? Dinesh: I will strive to provide clear direction and leadership to the Association. My experience as an entrepreneur will come in handy. In addition, my networks within the Asian region will add to the advantage of knitting the regional associations closer and facilitating the uplifting of the profession. Editor: That s very encouraging, we will hear more from you again and thank you for the opportunity to talk to you and get to know you better. 5
Know your Council members Know your Council Ms Vivian Lim Vice President ( ) Singapore Physiotherapy Association Editor: Hi Vivian, welcome on board to serve as the vice president of the Association. Can you tell us more about yourself? Vivian: I m a senior physiotherapist at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital Health for Life Centre where I help manage people with chronic disease especially those with diabetes. I graduated from NYP and went on to do my degree conversion in University of Sydney, NSW. Editor: Can you tell us why do you want to come forward to serve as the vice president? Vivian: I ve been involved with Association s activity like volunteering in the World Diabetes Day as a speaker. I do see the need for the profession to do more in enhancing public s health and has a passion for it. When the opportunity came to serve, I m willing to step out of the comfort zone to contribute to the physio community. Editor: Thank you for stepping out of the comfort zone, any last words to the members? Vivian: This council is relatively new and we have a lot to learn and explore. Please do give us your support as we seek to grow the profession. It will be an exciting journey as we will be celebrating our 50 th anniversary when our term ends and also not forgetting 2015 is a big year for all of us; WCPT Congress is coming to our shore. 6
Know your Council members Mr Low Hsien Chih Hon. Secretary ( ) Singapore Physiotherapy Association Editor: Hi Hsien Chih, welcome on board to serve as the Hon. Secretary of the Association. Can you tell us more about yourself? Hsien Chih: I m now an Operations Manager in Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital. Even though I m not a full time physio, but I remain a physio at heart and considers all my fellow physios members as my extended family. I used to work in NUH as a paediatrics physio and that remains my special interest. Editor: Hsien Chih, we know your passion for the profession. Having served as the previous council as the president, what are the key challenges that the Association faced? Hsien Chih: Membership is one of the key areas that we have identified. We have already starting to see the decline in numbers from the last AGM report. We all know that the strength of the Association lies from the numbers and the active participation from our members. We have achieved much from our strong membership, but to push the profession to another level requires the Association to do more to outreach to non-members and actively engage members. Editor: Hsien Chih, last question. Can you tell us something that we don t know about you? Hsien Chih: I m an avid sports fan and I m an Arsenal supporter. I spend most of my time outside work at home keeping order in a household that include my wife and my 2 kids. Know your Council members Know your Council members 7
Know your Council members Ms Yong Limin Hon. Treasurer ( ) Singapore Physiotherapy Association Editor: Hi Limin, welcome on board to serve as the Hon. Treasurer of the Association. Can you tell us more about yourself? Limin: I m a rehab manager at Bright Vision Hospital and have been working as a physio for 12 years. I ve a strong interest in Geriatrics Rehabilitation as I liked to work with the elderly. I m also involved with the Association s Geriatrics Chapter. Editor: Can you tell us why did you decide to step up to serve in the council? Limin: I ve always been an advocate for physiotherapy since I started work. I have always been quietly supporting the Association by being a member and attending AGM and vision planning. The opportunity came for me to stop being a back bencher and to come forward to do something more concrete for the profession. I guess it s the passion that prompted me to take the first step forward. Editor: Thank you for your passion and we look forward active contribution to the council. 8
