1 Thank you for joining us this year! Inside this issue you will find upcoming meeting and event dates, exciting and enriching opportunities, and an overview of the new CESA leaders. This year we are really interested in making CESA about YOU, so please, join us!

2 What is CESA anyway? Mission Statement: To promote educational development, personal growth, and networking among students and faculty of the Counselor Education Department. WHO: You, that s who! A portion of the tuition fees for all Counselor Education students is use to help support CESA. Therefore all Counselor Education students are automatically members! As such, you have an opportunity to have a say in what CESA is all about. Also, CESA is overseen by a committee of up to four student officers and a faculty advisor. New officers are elected every year in order to allow more Counselor Education students the opportunity to be actively involved and to ensure fresh ideas and direction. WHAT: CESA s mission statement is as follows: To promote educational development, personal growth, and networking among students and faculty of the Counselor Education Department. With the help and input of students and faculty, that is exactly what we set out to do. At least twice a year, CESA sponsors a free event for all Counselor Education students. These events usually consist of lectures, discussions, and presentations by working counseling professionals and professional association members. WHERE: Virtually all CESA meetings and events are conveniently held on the Northeastern Illinois University campus. Speakers and presenters are encouraged to come and meet with students on campus. The CESA bulletin board lists all upcoming meetings and events. The bulletin board is located just outside the Counselor Education office (LWH 4073). Also, if you sign-up on the NEIU Listserv, information about all CESA meetings and events will be ed directly to you. This year CESA will be utilizing Orgsync as well, in order to enable students who are unable to attend the meetings to still be an active part of CESA. On Orgsync we will post the minutes from previous meetings as well as important news and announcements regarding CESA activities and events. Students will be able to interact with CESA officers and other members on Orgsync and provide their input on the direction that the organization is going in. WHEN: CESA holds association meetings 1-2 times per month. These planning and informational meetings are open to all students. The twice annual CESA sponsored events are usually held during the Fall and Spring semesters. Once again, information about the day, time, place, and other important information about these events can be found on the CESA bulletin board outside the Counselor Education office, via the ListServ, and on Orgsync. WHY: Being involved in CESA or with CESA sponsored events is an ideal way to meet other students, members of the faculty, and other counseling professionals. CESA affords students the opportunity to network with counselors active in the profession, and the opportunity to gain real-world knowledge. Also, Counselor Education students who serve as CESA officers have a chance to receive tuition waivers for up to two classes during the year in which they serve. So, serving as an officer is not only performing a service for your fellow students, it can help offset some of your tuition costs. HOW: How do you get involved? Well, that could not be easier. Since all Counselor Education students are already CESA members, all you have to do is contact one of the student officers and let them know you are interested in helping out. Whether you want to volunteer to lend a hand at an event, have creative skills to help produce pamphlets, newsletters, or brochures, want to make suggestions for an upcoming event, or whether you want to serve as a CESA officer, everyone is welcome to join in! So please let us hear from you!!!

3 September 2010 Vol. 2 Issue 1 What to Look Forward To! There is much to look forward to in the coming weeks! We are in the midst of revamping a website/bulletin board, organizing meeting dates/times/locations, and listening to any feedback you have for our organization. In addition, we are planning on having an informal gathering at The Chicago Ale House on Friday, Sept. 17th at 7pm. This is a GREAT opportunity to mingle with your peers. If enough people come, Vince has volunteered to do a little celebratory dance! What You Missed! CESA Graduation Ceremony This year CESA, the graduate college, and the Department of Counselor Education sponsored a congratulatory celebration for the 2010 graduates on July 16th, 2010 in Alumni Hall. The graduating members from all tracts came together to celebrate their accomplishments along with family and friends at this joyous event. Attendees were able to further commemorate their years at NEIU with a CESA t-shirt sold outside the event. An overall success, we look forward to celebrating the upcoming year s graduates as well! 4 Who s Who In Counselor Education There have been some changes to the Department of Counselor Education and CESA since last year, and we at CESA would like to extend out gratitude to Dr. Nan Giblin for all of her work over the last eight years as the Chairperson of the Department of Counselor Education. We would also like to thank former CESA advisor Maria Lopez for the work she has done on behalf of CESA, as well as last year s CESA officers: Danier Piedrahita (President), Kathryn Pusateri (Vice President), Theresa Decker (Treasurer), and Ciemone Rose (Secretary) for all of the hard work they have done on behalf of all of us. We would also like to welcome Dr. Chuck Pistorio as the new Chairperson of the Department of Counselor Education, Dr. Eileen Pembroke as the new CESA faculty advisor and the new CESA officers this year: TJ Velazquez (President), Vince Heneghan (Vice President), Heather Sadilek (Treasurer), and Nicki Hesse (Secretary). 5 On September 30 and October 1, 2010, Northeastern Illinois University s Department of Counselor Education, several other departments at Northeastern, Adler School, and the Illinois Association of Art Therapists are co-sponsoring a conference titled, Art in Response to Violence. According to the conference website, Presenters from the Chicago area, states across the US and many other countries will offer diverse ways of using art and art making to express, communicate and document violence in its many forms. During this dynamic two-day conference, opportunities for exploration of the conference theme will be available via presentations, workshops and open studio as well as an art exhibit. The registration fee for both Thursday and Friday is $35 for students. The fee for only Thursday or Friday is $25 for students. Registrations postmarked after September 15, 2010 and walk-ins may register on a space-available basis with and additional fee of $20.
