1 NEWSLETTER Dear Members, What an exciting start to 2011 The Allied Health Professional Bill has just been passed by the Parliament and Singapore is at the forefront of hosting WCPT 2015 congress, the physiotherapy equivalent of the Olympics. These are the results of the hard work put in by our predecessors. They had pushed and failed for both legislation and the previous bid to host WCPT 2011 Congress. With unwavering determination, SPA persevered and learnt from its previous setbacks, picked itself up and fought on valiantly to see through our dreams. 2 President s Message on Allied Health Professional s Act Dear colleagues, Last week, marked the end of a journey that started back in the mid 1990s. After almost 2 decades of tireless dedication and hard work by the many councils before me, the Allied Health Professions Bill was finally passed in parliament last week. This is a historical milestone for the physiotherapy profession in Singapore. As we celebrate this milestone, we should also thank the many people who made this possible including all our past Councils and especially Dr Wong Wai Pong who chaired the committee and were instrumental in the passing of this Bill. I see this Bill as an endorsement of our good work and contribution to the society as a profession. More importantly, it solidifies our status as a Healthcare Professional in Singapore. Moving forward, SPA will continue to work towards the development of the profession in Singapore and focus our attention on Continuing Professional Development and Post Graduate Education. We have the support of the Ministry of Health in this new journey and are in the midst of exploring with a couple of tertiary institutions the possibility of a locally based post graduate program. I foresee that that the next two years will be busy and exciting as we try to gear ourselves up for this journey. SPA would like to invite everyone on this journey, from the Physiotherapy Student to the Practicing Physiotherapists with Post-Graduate Certification to join us in our quest for a locally based postgraduate Physiotherapy Program. We need everybody s support to push this forward so that we may realise our dreams together. Lastly, on behalf of the SPA council, I would like to congratulate you for attaining the deserved recognition and thank you all for representing the profession with pride. Here s wishing you and your loved ones a Happy, Healthy and Hearty New Year Low Hsien Chih President Singapore Physiotherapy Association 2

5 World Physiotherapy Day 2010 A Pictorial 5

6 World Diabetes Day th November marks World Diabetes Day Session. Although having diabetes is definitely not something most people will rejoice about however on this day, many people from the Diabetes Society of Singapore (DSS) as well as the public from all walks of life came together to celebrate how the management of diabetes has advanced, saving many diabetics from the detrimental complications of this disease. SPA was honoured to be invited to such an important occasion. It is even more heartening to know that the theme, Take control of diabetes. Now has revealed the essence of the current direction of managing diabetes. The growing acceptance of exercise as a preventative arm in diabetes is encouraging. This can be seen as with a 2.5 kilometres walk from the Yio Chu Kang stadium mark the opening of a whole day of activities. After the warm up, conducted with the help of our NYP student volunteers to guide the public in the stretches, the enthusiastic crowd decked in a sea of blue shirts started their walk. Vivian Lim from KTPH shared with the participants on her expertise with diabetes management, Too Sweet to Be Good - Preventing Diabetes with exercise, and did a live demonstration of various calisthenics exercises that could be done as a home exercise program. Everyone had an enjoyable time sharing with the public on the benefits of exercise and empowering them with exercises to try and start their little step in increasing their daily physical activity. For Vivian, it was a humble step in increasing the awareness of the importance of physical activity in leading a healthy lifestyle. 6
