Our annual volunteer appreciation event is just around the corner and we are excited. With the help of the Redwood County Advisory Council I have been working hard to plan a special event for you our wonderful volunteers. Back by popular demand is the yummy Dad s Belgium Waffle feed. Can t you just smell them now? Music will be provided by The Neverly Brothers. The event starts at 5 PM at St. Catherine s Church in Redwood Falls and waffles will be served till 6 PM. Following the dinner, a program will follow and door prizes donated by stations and local businesses will be given away. Volunteers enrolled with our program and recording hours should have received a bright yellow postcard in the mail inviting them to attend the event. If you or someone you know does not receive an invitation please contact our office as soon as possible. We are looking forward with great excitement to seeing all of you, as together we celebrate the volunteer work you have done this year. Joint Powers Board Make sure to wear your pin to the Volunteer Appreciation Event. We hope you proudly wear your pin every time you volunteer. 2 National Service Day On April 4, 2017, A.C.E. of SW Minnesota volunteers visited the board meeting of the Redwood County Commissioners as part of National Service Recognition Day. Lon Walling, County Board Chair of Redwood county proclaimed the day as National Service Recognition Day and encouraged residents to recognize the positive impact of National Service Programs in our county, to thank those who serve; and to find ways to give back to our community. The proclamation states As a County Commission, we work hard every day to make life better for our constituents and strengthening the spirit and commitment of the volunteers who serve our county is just one of our many goals. We are grateful for the dedication and sacrifice of these citizens who are helping make our great county stronger, safer, and healthier A.C.E. of SW MN volunteers shared information about their volunteer work throughout the county. Commissioners thanked the volunteers for their hard work and dedication. Counties are increasingly turning to National Service programs like A.C.E. as cost-effective strategy to meet county needs. Why Didn t I Get Invited to the Volunteer Appreciation Night? We are asked this question many times. We know there are lots of people volunteering and doing great things. But to receive an invitation for the Volunteer Appreciation Night volunteers must do the following: 1. Complete an Enrollment Form with the A.C.E. of SW Minnesota Redwood County office. 2. Actively record hours monthly on the station timesheets where you serve. Or you may call, send or our office with your hours by the 5 th of each month. You will find a sheet to record your hours at the end of this newsletter. 3 Redwood County Volunteers in Action Redwood County Advisory Council Thank you to the Redwood County Advisory Council who helped with the preparing of the postcards for the Volunteer Appreciation Event. Also serving on the Advisory Council is Sandy Gustad but missing from the picture. Sign and Symptoms of Stroke: Act Fast! Wednesday May 10, :30 a.m. Redwood Area Community Center Presenter Marley Braun, RN and Nicole Paulson, RN Redwood Area Hospital Learn more about what stroke is, what the risk factors for stroke are, and lifestyle modifiers to prevent stroke. You will also learn symptoms of a stroke, what to do if you have stroke like symptoms, and about Redwood Area Hospital s Telestroke program. Classes are free. 5 Volunteers Are You Looking for a New Volunteer Opportunity? If you are interested in any of the following volunteer opportunities call A.C.E. of SW MN Redwood County at Celebrate Redwood Falls committee is looking for volunteers to help on the night of Night Falls on May 5 & 6. Volunteers are needed to help with set-up and tear down for the event on Friday & Saturday. Strong men & women needed to load trailer with generator, haul picnic tables, and other items needed for event, string lights, etc. Sell food/concessions (walking tacos & cotton candy) in the parking lot from 7:30 11:00 pm. Help with sales of glow sticks and necklaces; collect money from bus ride, etc. and other general help. Please call Laura Kohler at to volunteer. Good Morning Telephone Reassurance caller is needed in the Redwood Falls area. Calls are made from your own home on Saturdays between 8 AM & 10 AM. Calls are to senior citizens who enjoy a friendly visit and to check that everything is okay. Training is provided. Call our office at to volunteer. Johnson Park Place is looking for a volunteer to read to residents at their assisted living facility. Volunteer would chose books to read to residents and read to them on Wednesday afternoon for about one hour starting at 2 PM. Call Johnson Park Place at The Special Olympic Area 8 Track & Field event will be held on May 6 at the Redwood Area Community Center. Volunteers are needed from 8:45 am 1:45pm. Set you own hours and volunteer for the amount of time you have available. Volunteers are needed to man volunteer check-in station and give out shirts, serve lunch, assist getting athletes in right lane, run stop watch at event, help with measuring distance at throwing events, door monitors and traffic controllers, help with awards, and people to come and cheer on participants. 6 Reporting Your Hours Reporting your hours is important to us. Did you know you can report your hours several ways. If you are volunteering at a station that is registered with us you can record your hours on their Station Timesheet.
