20 July Conference Special Edition In form The Staff Newsletter for Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust Inclusive Coming Together at the Staff Conference 2011 Tuesday 5 July was not only the birthday of the NHS (which came into being 63 years ago under the original NHS Act), it was also the day of the first ever Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust Staff Conference. 150 new Trust staff members from across Shropshire County and Telford and Wrekin made their way to the Park Inn, Telford to help celebrate the new Trust s launch. The energy and enthusiasm at the first ever Staff Conference for the new Community Trust was obvious from the start. A mix of new faces and new names mingled with more familiar names and faces and before long the Park Inn in Telford was filled. The afternoon included four speakers. Mike Ridley, Chairman of the Trust was passionate and clear in talking about what our new Trust is here for, stressing that it s to really focus on community services, and to make sure we are providing the services that we would want for our own families. Ian Cumming, the SHA Chief Executive gave a frank insight into the NHS at the moment and what s going to be happening in the future. One resounding message from Ian was that he felt community health services was the area for potential future growth with much more of a focus on helping people in their own homes and communities than in larger acute hospital settings. Jo Chambers, the Trust Chief Executive gave a very personal and inspiring take on the merger of provider services. Several key themes came out of Jo s speech, themes which not only brought into focus the challenges ahead for us all individually and as a single organisation, but also themes that would help guide us and the Trust forward. Continues on page 2 Highlights in this edition: Staff Conference 2011 Service Showcase Flu Vaccination Call to Action Summary Care Records Update
Jo s Key Themes We have a great opportunity in our new Trust to influence the shape of the future health services in Shropshire. This is our time to make a real difference We are here first and foremost to serve our patients and the wider population to keep them safe, to deliver high quality services and to continually improve these services We want our new Trust to be an organisation that is business aware but still holds true to the caring and compassionate values of the NHS We want our new Trust to be an organisation that everyone wants to be a part of and be proud of, and to make our merger successful We all have a responsibility to make our new Trust be the sort of organisation that people are proud of Staff, through their team leaders and managers, are encouraged to help work out exactly how their individual services help to meet the overall aims of the Trust, our patients and our commissioners. Jo also spoke about the need for high levels of staff engagement and about staff pulling together and working together around a common purpose, because this can significantly improve staff satisfaction, which in turn has been shown to impact positively on patient outcomes. Many team leaders and managers are participating in the evidence based Aston Team Based Working Programme Guest speaker Adrian Webster finished off the conference with his own unique take on inspiring teams and getting the most out of colleagues. Adrian helped energize the afternoon with his humorous and inspirational take on life and work. He provided us with some invaluable tips to inspire us as well as some incredibly funny anecdotes to demonstrate his points. A man with a varied career background, a lot of Adrian s experiences came from when he was a riot police officer. He gave some sometime touching accounts of dealing with people, of going that extra mile, of doing the tiny noticeable things (TNTs) that make all the difference to people, to patients, to colleagues. A rousing round of applause bought the final speaker of the day to a close, and helped remind us all why we work for the NHS and why we do what we do. Visit then click on the Staff Zone and then Training and Development and Staff Welcome Conference 2011 to get access to presentations from the conference; or click here.
Interestingly, one aspect of Jo s speech that seemed to strike a chord with staff, was the importance of each of us giving own individual best to whatever we do, no matter what our role. An extract from a Martin Luther King speech helped to paint the picture in people s minds about what this actually meant If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep the streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, sweep the streets like Beethoven composed music or like Shakespeare wrote poetry and then all the hosts of heaven and earth will have to pause to say here lived a great street sweeper. Jo s Final Conference Thought As well as thanking everyone once again for all your hard work and support in getting us to this incredibly exciting position, I just wanted to reflect on something I touched on at the conference. We know what we do brings real benefits to local people, but we have to balance that with the changing NHS system that we work within and in doing this we will all must make changes, and let go of some of the things that are most familiar to us. As a new Trust we will all have the opportunity to learn and develop together as we build our new Trust and prepare for Foundation Trust status. Everyone has an important role to play in how we respond to the changing NHS and its new challenges. Everyday we support vulnerable families and children; everyday we support troubled teenagers; everyday we support older people that are frail and frightened. What we do matters to people everyday, and I thank you for all that you do for our patients. The launch conference for the Community Trust, which was a great success, was about: new beginnings; being stronger together and serving local people.
Insights from the Chief Executive The new Trust is now in full swing, and we are already making lots of progress in getting the remaining vacant management positions filled. The Director of Service Delivery role, the only vacant director role, is out to national advert and interviews are due to take place later in August. In the meantime, you will have seen the short staff update announcing the interim appointment of Richard Carroll to the role. I would like to welcome Richard to the Trust, and I know he is getting round to see the great services we deliver across the county. We now have a great opportunity in our new Trust to influence the shape of the future health services in Shropshire. I hope that those of you able to go to the first ever Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust Staff Conference will feel, like me, that it was a really positive event, with lots of enthusiasm. Mike Ridley, the Chair of the Trust, spoke passionately about the importance of community services in the local health economy, whilst Ian Cumming, Chief Executive of the West Midlands Strategic Health Authority and guest speaker Adrian Webster provided different takes on life in the NHS at the moment. I hope everyone who came got something positive out of it. For me, it was a great opportunity to meet many members of staff, to share some of the things that I think are important to the future of our services and why I believe so strongly about our important role in Shropshire s health. I really want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all your hard work that you do everyday whether clinical or non clinical. It s this effort and dedication that makes everything work for our patients. This special edition of Inform also has more in depth feature on the conference so even if you weren t able to come, please take a look. Jo Chambers Chief Executive Service Showcase Each month we will be providing you will a glimpse into the work of some of our services. It s a great opportunity to promote the good work that everyone s doing and it s also an opportunity to communicate important service messages and also making other colleagues across the Trust aware of what you get up to. Read on to find out about the great work the School Nurses have been doing recently.
Incredible Successes The school nursing team offer a wide range of services to schools right across the county, including vaccination programmes through to health promotion campaigns. Below are just two examples of great successes of recent months. Shropshire County Schools HPV Vaccination Campaign 2010/2011 Shropshire school nurses working in partnership with local authority schools and the independent sector continue to successfully raise the profile and uptake of this important vaccination and to meet the challenges involved in delivering all three doses. The schools HPV immunisation programme is nearing the end of its third year. With the catch up programme completed last year, our aim is to immunise at least 90% of the target cohort (girls aged years). To offer the optimum protection against the two most common strains of HPV which cause 70% of cervical cancers, it is important that each young girl takes up the opportunity to complete the three dose vaccine course. Although we have yet to complete this years programme the uptake figures for the end of May 2011 are currently; 1st Dose = 90.9%: 2nd Dose = 90.2%: 3rd Dose = 85.8%. With the continuing drive from all staff and colleagues involved with this positive outcome, we are extremely hopeful that Vital Signs targets will be met as in previous years. Did you know? A range of local health care professionals have worked together to produce the document Guidance for the management of Asthma in Primary Schools. The school nursing team has been working to introduce this into all primary, junior and most recently secondary schools across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin. A big well done to the whole team for their success in this! Want to showcase what you do? If you want to tell people about the great work that you and your team do, or you have something important that you want to tell the rest of your colleagues about your service, then simply drop the communications team a short with details of your service, what you have recently done that you are proud of or a short concise message about what you need people to know words is the maximum that we would expect so try and keep your news concise and snappy. Talking of snaps if you have a photo to accompany the story, then even better! So send your words and pictures to: communications@shropcom.nhs.uk.
Get ready Flu is coming again! It s that time of year again and the Flu season will soon be upon us. We need to protect ourselves, our patients and our family and friends by having our Flu vaccination. Occupational Health will be offering Flu vaccinations from the end of September and to make sure that they can see as many people as possible, at a time convenient to you, they would like to hear from you. If you have a team meeting or another group event and would like us to attend to give Flu vaccinations or if you want to book an individual appointment, please ring Occupational Health on now! Information A patient s Summary Care Record (SCR) contains essential health information about medicines, allergies and adverse reactions taken from their GP record. Once SCRs are created, authorised NHS healthcare staff in urgent and emergency care settings that need the information will begin to view these records when delivering care. By giving these specific healthcare staff faster and easier access to the information through the SCR it will help them to support the effective treatment provided to patients. Local Project Update: Bridgnorth Medical Practice, Drayton Medical Practice and Radrook Green have all successfully completed the upload of Summary Care Records in April 2011, with approximately 42,500 records created and with under 500 patients (less than 1.2%) choosing to opt out: All practices held local information awareness raising sessions in and around the practice, supported by members of the Project Team. The feedback from patients has been extremely positive some of the comments made were: I think it s a marvellous idea. Due to problems with my medication in the past, I now carry a summary of my medication around with me Good idea as I can never remember the names of the pills that I am taking. I have no problem with having a Summary Care Record as I think it s a good idea but my wife feels differently and she has chosen to opt out Further information is available: on the Connecting for Health Website (CFH) or you can contact Gill Richards Project Manager Creating Excellent Communications what to look out for We are working on developing communications that help you stay up to date and well informed. Inform the new staff newsletter will be coming to you regularly; as will as an improved Team Brief A new interim website is up at we are already working on a new site Staff updates will also be distributed when appropriate A possible intranet solution is also currently being trialled We will be asking you for your opinions and help in developing our internal communications, so watch this space. In the meantime, if you have any questions, then please contact communications@shropcom.nhs.uk.
