Unless otherwise stated programmes are provided free of charge and paid for by Carers Services: where there is a small charge, it is paid on arrival. At the end of the booklet is an application form that can be used to apply for places on any course. 3 EMERGENCY FIRST AID A 3 hour course This course has been specifically designed for Carers to cover key areas that family carers need to learn. The course will be practical and give Carers the chance to discuss their particular needs. This session covers: Dealing with incidents Basic resuscitation Heart attacks and strokes Burns, scalds Poisoning, choking Shock, bleeding, fractures and management of the unconscious casualty. Date Tuesday 4th September 2018 Time 10:00am - 1:00pm Venue Paignton Library, First Floor, Room 10 A handbook will be provided for each participant that covers the key course information. The Course is free to carers (NB: This programme is not available to staff working in agencies or paid carers). PAGE 3
4 MEDITATION & RELAXATION A 5 week course. 1.5 hours per week This is a weekly class providing the space to practice simple techniques to nurture oneself. It will offer a range of tools for personal use that include: Breathing and meditation exercises Methods for deep relaxation and unwinding Practices for integrating, centering and grounding The group will be led by Penny Rouvas, who has worked in health and education for over 15 years. The session is suitable for ALL. Mats will be provided (chairs will also be available for those who need them). Please bring a blanket to cover yourself during relaxation. 5 DOLS TRAINING (DEPRIVATION OF LIBERTY SAFEGUARDS) New course. One session, 3 hours This session aims to help Carers to understand what the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards are all about by providing an opportunity to discuss: Why the safeguards are in place Who the safeguards effect and why How a deprivation of a person s liberty can occur The legal position should a person become deprived of their liberty How the safeguards provide a legal framework to protect people who are deprived of their liberty. How the process of protecting people who are deprived of their liberty is likely to change in the future. The session will be facilitated by a member of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Team based within Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust and will enable you to ask questions about how the safeguards are implemented locally within Torbay. 6 EXERCISE FOR BETTER HEALTH An 11 week supervised gym programme The course will include an eleven week supervised gym programme with a trained fitness instructor, aimed at all levels of fitness. A tailored programme will be put together to establish regular physical activity, to improve health and wellbeing. Each course will have a small group of Carers. There will be a 10 charge for this course. Please pay at reception on arrival and take your receipt to the gym area. Participants will have an individual fitness assessment prior to starting the programme with the Fitness Instructor. Programme 1 Friday 14th September - 16th November 2018 Time Venue First session please allow 2 hours meet and greet, induction - health summary and programme (10:00am - 12:00pm) Thereafter 10:00am - 11:00am Torbay Leisure Centre, Penwill Way, Paignton PAGE 6
7 NAIL & FOOT CARE AWARENESS / DIABETIC FOOT HEALTH A 2.5 hour course The session will provide the practical skills of nail trimming, filing techniques with the appropriate equipment and advice on how to take care of your feet. This session covers: General foot health education, including skin care and footwear advice Enable Carers to carry out general foot inspections and recognise any problems The role of podiatry, including why social nail care does not require treatment from a qualified podiatrist Provide Carers with a better understanding of how diabetes can affect the feet Enable Carers to recognise the low risk to at risk of ulceration feet What to do when you recognise a problem How to access Podiatry if a problem develops Date Thursday 2nd August 2018 Time 2:00pm - 4:30pm Venue Paignton Carers Centre, Paignton Library, The Drummond Suite, Carers Services, First Floor PAGE 7
8 LEGAL WORKSHOP FOR CARERS A 3 hour course The aim of this workshop is to explain and offer expert advice on two important legal issues that Carers need to consider when planning for the future: Mental Capacity Act 2005 This introduced new arrangements for making decisions when people have difficulty doing so themselves. It will affect people with long term illnesses or disability, mental health problems, and their families, Carers and health and social care agencies. It will cover situations where decisions need to be made in relation to finances, property, health and welfare. These changes will be explained with particular attention to Power of Attorney and Assessment of Mental Capacity. Wills and Trusts Making provision for the future is an issue for many Carers, concerned that the person they care for gets the right support and protection they need in the future. The benefits of making Wills and the different types of Trusts will be explained. The programme is FREE to Torbay Carers. Refreshments will be provided. The workshop will include presentations on the law, practical advice and the opportunity to ask questions. 9 HOPE - A COURSE FOR CARERS & THEIR CARED FOR A 5 week programme 2 hours per week What is HOPE? HOPE stands for Help Overcoming Problems Effectively. It is a licensed programme that helps people who are living with and whose lives are being affected by a long term condition achieve What matters to them and their Carers. What can HOPE do for you? It aims to help you to achieve some of the following positive outcomes and to: Feel more able to support and share your experiences with others to help you feel less isolated Feel reassured and able to recognise your own potential and enhance your happiness and quality of life Feel more confident in dealing with emotional issues such as anxiety, anger, depression and uncertainty Increase your ability to handle stressful situations Discover how to use relaxation techniques to refresh your mind and body Learn how to make plans and achieve goals that are important to you that can help you make changes for the better Use the skills from the course to improve and self-manage your life We will cover: Managing fatigue, getting active/feeling good, goal setting, gratitude diary, managing stress and communication. 10 STRESS & TIME MANAGEMENT A 3 hour course Caring can be very stressful, so we have put together a 3 hour course that will look at some common causes and signs of stress and how you might cope with stress more effectively. 11 MANAGING HEARING AIDS One session, 1 hour This session will provide you with a basic understanding of hearing aids and maintaining them. Areas covered in the course: General ear education Beginners guide to hearing aids How to insert hearing aids correctly Enable Carers to carry out maintenance Help to identify problems and what to do to resolve it How to access the Audiology Service Where to find additional help Date Wednesday 14th November 2018 Time 2:30pm - 3:30pm Venue Paignton Carers Centre, Paignton Library, The Drummond Suite, Carers Services, First Floor PAGE 11
12 TEDDY BEAR MAKING WORKSHOP FOR THE CONFIDENT SEWER A 5 week programme 2.5 hours per week This sewing workshop is only suitable for those who are confident about using their own sewing machine and can sew autonomously. You will need to decide on which bear you would like to make and order online at: If you do not have access to a computer then please contact Natalie Townsend on: (01803) to organise a time to come in and access an NHS laptop. The kit includes the pattern, fur and everything you need to make your beautiful bear. Bring your sewing machine and your bear pack and together you will be instructed and guided throughout the process of making your bear. 14 YOGALATES A 5 week programme hours per week This course offers a fusion between yoga and pilates to enhance complete fitness, strength, flexibility, relaxation and well-being. The course fee includes a voucher for coffee in the restaurant. Dates Tuesday 18th September 16th October 2018 Time 10:30am - 12:00pm Venue South Devon College, Level 3 (3.007), Long Road TQ4 7EJ Cost A one off payment of 10 to be paid on arrival, this will also include a cup of coffee from the restaurant. FALLS AWARENESS FOR CARERS A 2.5 hour session for carers of older people Run by Jane Reddaway, Occupational Therapist and Clinical Specialist Falls This session covers: The problems of falls in older people and dispelling the myths Helping those who attend to understand the ageing process and how this increases a person s risk of falling Information about fracture prevention and osteoporosis Introducing the falls register Exploring possible strategies to reduce falls/fractures in the future Date Thursday 1st November 2018 Time 10:30am - 1:00pm Venue Paignton Carers Centre, Paignton Library, The Drummond Suite, Carers Services, First Floor PAGE 14
