Rhribal2001@yahoo.com We are a month away from the end of the Society year. It seems like the time has really flown by. I hope everyone is wrapping up a very successful year. Please make sure all Chapter officers and Committee Chairs have input PAOE points on-line for all the hard work your Chapter has done this year. All points must be entered by July 15, 2013! I want to thank all the current Chapter Presidents for all their hard work. It has been my pleasure working with all of you this year and I wish you much success in your personal, business and ASHRAE endeavors. I also want to welcome all the incoming Chapter Presidents. We had a great Presidents-Elect training meeting last month with 11 of our 13 Chapters represented. We also had all but one of our Regional Officers in attendance. Thanks to all of you for making this a successful event and I wish you a great Society year. As the year ends, I also want to thank Rob Laneve RVC-CTTC for his great service to the Region the last three years and welcome Jim Arnold who will become our RVC-CTTC next year. We also want to welcome Ted Kussow, RVC-MP and Sonya Pouncy, RVC- GGAC who will join the Regional team next year. Finally, I want to thank Rich Zbin our current ARC for all his help and support. Please provide Rick all the support you can as he becomes our DRC for the next three years. There are a couple of very important events coming as we go through the Summer. First is the Society Summer meeting in Denver, Colorado, June 22 to 26 (please see the ASHRAE website for details). On Monday, June 24, we will have our Regional Dinner in Denver at Appaloosa Grill. Once again, we will have a combined dinner with Region VI. For additional information see the Region V website or contact Rick Zbin. I hope to see many of you at the Summer Meeting and Regional Dinner. Secondly, I hope everyone is planning to attend the Region V CRC in Columbus, OH on August 8 thru 10. They are planning a great event and Chapters need to make sure they have all officers and committee chair attend. Finally I want to thank all our Chapters and Regional Officers who have helped and supported me over my three year term as your DRC. It has been my pleasure and honor to represent Region V. I have enjoyed working with the CRC Committees and meeting with many of our Chapter members over the last several years. This is a great hard working Region and I know I am leaving it in good hands with Rick and all the Regional Officers. I wish the Region much continued success and I will continue to serve the Region and ASHRAE as requested. I hope everyone has a great summer and as always, please contact me or any of the Regional Officers if we can be of help or if you have ideas or concerns. Thank you for all you do for your Chapter, the Region and Society. Thank you for allowing me to serve.

2 Page 2 REGION V NEWSLETTER June 2013, Volume 4, Issue 11 Region V ARC by: Richard Zbin, Region V ARC/Webmaster First, I would like to thank all of the people that attended president elect training in Fort Wayne last month. The president elects were treated to a full day of what to expect during their year as president. I would like to remind the president elects to have their CIQ's filled out so Society knows whom to contact during their year as president. I would like remind everyone about this year's Chapters Regional Conference in Columbus, Ohio in August. Go to the Columbus chapter's website for more information and to register. They are trying to make this year's CRC family friendly with an event at the Ohio Historical Society Museum that is priced with the family in mind. Check it out and make your plans early. I will continue with this newsletter coming out quarterly (September, December, March and June) during my term as DRC and ask the chapters to submit articles and pictures to both the newsletter and regional website to s hare with the region. If you have any articles, please submit them to me or any regional officer. The articles need to be in my hands two weeks in advance of the newsletter publishing date. Do not forget to attend the regional dinner on Monday in Denver at the Summer meeting in June. Check out the regional website for location and time and registration information. A good time, good food and great freinds is always had at the regional dinner. Finally, I would like to thank Lee Millies for his work as DRC. Resource Promotion Committee Report by: Derek Crowe, RP RVC As of May 28, 2013 Region V has raised $76,000 for ASHRAE RP! This is 14% above last year s pace. With continued success of our chapter RP golf outings this month, we will meet or exceed our goal of $115,000! The following chapters lead our region. 3 Page 3 REGION V NEWSLETTER June 2013, Volume 4, Issue 11 Membership Promotion Committee Report by: Ted Kussow, RP RVC Hello, as your new RVC for Membership Promotion I am looking forward to meeting all of the MP chapter chairs at the upcoming Centralized Training Sunday, June 23rd at the 2013 Annual Conference in Denver and at the CRC in Columbus, OH. Please note that it is recommended that chapter chairs attend both the Centralized Training and the CRC. To assist with that, the Region will reimburse mileage for the MP chair to attend the CRC if the MP chair also attends Centralized Training. In order for MP chairs to be on the mailing list from ASHRAE all chapter presidents need to submit the CIQ for the chapter by June 1 st with the MP chair position. This will help get the information to the chairs on the Centralized Training. We are approaching the end of the ASHRAE calendar where we usually see an uptick in membership growth. Please do what you can to help this growth occur by reaching out to delinquent members and emphasizing the benefits of ASHRAE. The Handbook for 2013 is Fundamentals which is a popular one. I will be checking PAOE and let me know what I can do to assist you in your efforts as I am still learning this role. Chapter Technology Transfer Committee Report by: Rob Laneve, CTTC-RVC Another ASHRAE year almost done?...unbelievable! The ASHRAE year is coming to a close and as we complete one year, it is time to plan for the next year! For starters, Region V will have a new CTTC RVC because my three year term as RVC comes to a close on June 30, Mr. Jim Arnold will be your new CTTC RVC for Region V. Jim is from the Columbus Chapter and is eager to take over the reigns. On April 26, I attended the Region V President Elect meeting in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It was great to see and meet the incoming Chapter Presidents for the year. During the meeting I provided a brief overview of the responsibilities of their Chapter CTTC Committee Chairman and I also had the pleasure of introducing our incoming CTTC RVC Jim Arnold. We look forward to seeing each of the Chapter CTTC Committee Chairs at the 2013 Region V CRC on August 8-10, 2013.in Columbus, OH! (At the 2012 CRC we only had five of our thirteen chapters represented at our CTTC training, so for 2013, let s give Jim a warm welcome and have all 13 represented.) For the year, we have received three Technology Award applications for our Region V competition. These have been submitted by the Western Michigan and Detroit Chapters. Judging will take place over the upcoming weeks and results will be published the first week of July. Thank you to all chapters that utilized the Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Program this year! We recently conducted our Society CTTC DL Sub-Committee meeting and once again have a great line-up of DL s for the year.. please take advantage of this great program! As we close out the ASHRAE year, please remember to update your CTTC PAOE points! Thank you to all chapters for their work during the past three years as I functioned as your CTTC RVC. I appreciate everyone s efforts to utilize our DL Program, complete their PAOE points, and implement great programs that offered value to our members. I wish each Chapter continued success. And finally, remember to make plans for your Columbus trip in August!

4 Page 4 REGION V NEWSLETTER June 2013, Volume 4, Issue 11 Student Activities Report by: Russell Marcks, RVC Student Activities Another academic year has come to a close and the students have gone home. But that does not mean our work for the year is done. In fact, it s a nearly perfect time to get ready for next year! First, as your chapter schedules next year s program, work with your student branch faculty advisor(s) to determine which scheduled topics would be of interest to them and their students. Perhaps they will even be discussing those topics in the classroom. Coordinating a student night with the local branch is a good way to generate both student and faculty advisor interest and perhaps increase student membership. In previous newsletters, I ve addressed the importance of K-12 outreach and the upcoming potential of a high five for K-12 outreach by the chapter officers. As your chapter s SAC, I recommend you coordinate these two K-12 outreach activities with your incoming President. Establish a plan for K-12 classroom visits and other activities including those for your chapter officers. In direct support of K-12 outreach, I recommend you begin (if you haven t already) by contacting the STEM coordinator for your local middle school or high school. If you start in your own community, even if it is only at a single school, it will not be so overwhelming. Begin with your local school, develop a process, and expand. This works equally well for ANY chapter member who wishes to become involved in K-12 outreach. You may also wish to talk to technology professors at local colleges, whether or not they have a student branch, about preparing a submission for next year s undergraduate grant. The goal is to make local colleges aware of the grant award and to let them know the grant is not necessarily for research projects. In today s economy and reduced educational funding, it is a great way for a school to develop student designed/built trainers. This grant submission is due in the fall. It is not a difficult submission, but does require a budget. As such, it is a good time to begin thinking about such submissions. You should also be aware of the fact that three Region V schools have submitted an ASHRAE Senior Project for judging. These are Ferris State (Design Selection), University of Cincinnati (ISBD), and Purdue University (Design Calculations). All submitted projects are of very high quality and are something of which the design team and the sponsoring chapter can be proud. These projects will pass through regional judging by June 2. Finally, PAOE is due by July 15. Please login and update your points. Amongst all of the line items for which you can receive PAOE points, there is one in particular to which you should pay attention. Prepare a letter, signed by the chapter president and sent to the Dean of the college where you have a student branch. The letter should recognize the work of your Student Branch Faculty Advisor. More important than PAOE points, the faculty advisors truly appreciate this recognition. The CRC is fast approaching. If you haven t yet registered, please do so now by visiting I have a full agenda planned for the CRC and look forward to seeing you then.

5 Page 5 REGION V NEWSLETTER June 2013, Volume 4, Issue 11 Region V History by: Devin Snowberger, Region V Historian Good day to you all: I would like to remind all chapter historians that there is still time to update your year s activity on your timelines and submit for PAOE. Also, keep in mind the CRC is coming up in August and a few of our chapters have a lot of awards to update. What s YEA and what s YCC? Region V YEA Representative by: Roxanne Scott, YRC Region V YEA is an acronym for Young Engineers in ASHRAE, it represents the demographic of ASHRAE members that are 35 years old or younger that are not student members so, this group includes young professionals - whether just out of school or establishing an early careers in our industry.
