1 1 Inside The Tweed Loop Issue 7, Spring 2010 Welcome to the Spring 2010 edition of the Tweed Loop. This past year, 2009, has been an extremely busy year for the Foundation and its membership might prove to be an even busier year! In this newsletter we will look back at 2009 and look ahead to Please read it carefully so that you, as a Foundation member or interested party, can appreciate all the many things that the Charles H. Tweed International Foundation does for its members and for the specialty of orthodontics. Mark your calendars for upcoming events. AAO meeting Tweed Foundation Reception Ap r i l 30, :00p m Gr a n d Hy a t t, Wa s h i n g t o n 28th Biennial Meeting October 22-25, 2010 Westin La Paloma, Tucson upcoming events The Business of the Foundation The Foundation s Board of Directors continues to manage the Memorial Center in a very frugal manner. The Board authorized Nancy Netherton to do repairs on the fence that separates the Foundation property from the property to the west, to update some areas in the lecture hall and to keep the place in excellent repair. Nancy has done a great job of getting these things accomplished. The Secretary/Treasurer examines the property when he is in Tucson for the Tweed Course, and he always makes a list for Nancy. Nancy gets the job done. You can be proud of your Foundation s Memorial Center. It continues to remain the garden spot of Broadway. The Foundation s financial status is strong due to our endowment fund. It has not earned as much as it has in past years, but we re managing. The Board of Directors, in cooperation with the Secretary/Treasurer, is attempting to be extremely frugal with the funds that we have at our disposal. We must keep the property in great shape and service our membership. Membership service consists of mailings, updates about Foundation activities, this newsletter and the Tweed Profile. Of course, the Foundation also sponsors the Tweed Study Course. Your Foundation is active, busy and is a contributing force in orthodontics. You can be proud of what it is doing. A Look Back at 2009 September, 2009 Course The September 2009 Course was completely subscribed with 128 students. These students were from all over the world as is true with every course. The enclosed photographs of the 2009 Course should bring back fond memories to many of you of the time you spent in Tucson at the tables. Course Director Klontz continues to put together a great staff for each and every course and the September course was no exception. Japanese Tweed Pre-Tucson Course - For the past twelve years, Dr. Klontz has gone to Japan each Fall to help our Japanese instructors present a Pre-Tucson Course. This group teaches Japanese University students the fundamentals of wire-bending, etc. and prepares the student prior to his/her attendance at the Tweed Study Course. The enclosed photographs of the Japanese pre-tucson course attest to the hard work that goes on in order to prepare Japanese students for the Tweed Study Course. Dr. Klontz is to be congratulated for the many years he has done this. His efforts have definitely paid off because there is a great Japanese Tweed Orthodontic Association and students who come to Tucson from Japan are always well prepared for the hard work that must be done to successfully complete the Tweed Study Course. Because Dr. Klontz is ageless, he will probably continue to do this course for the next 25 years!

Chinese Tweed Meeting - At the invitation of Tiamin Xu, Chairman of the Department of Orthodontics at Peking University, Jim Vaden and honorary academic member, Lysle Johnston, were lecturers at

Vaden was helped with the wirebending day by William Jiang, Haiping Lu, Jimmy Teng and a group of excellent young people who have taken the Tweed Study Course.

In conjunction with the Chinese Orthodontic Society Meeting, there was a special meeting of all former Tweed Course participants and people who were interested in the Tweed Study Course.

4 Chinese Tweed Meeting - At the invitation of Tiamin Xu, Chairman of the Department of Orthodontics at Peking University, Jim Vaden and honorary academic member, Lysle Johnston, were lecturers at Peking University as well as at universities in Xian and Shanghai and at the 9th Annual Chinese Orthodontic Society Meeting. While in Sanya, at the Chinese Orthodontic Society Meeting, Dr. Vaden presented a two-day course for interested participants. The first day consisted of a wire-bending experience and the second day consisted of lectures on Tweed-Merrifield philosophy, the extraction, non-extraction dilemma, etc. Dr. Vaden was helped with the wirebending day by William Jiang, Haiping Lu, Jimmy Teng and a group of excellent young people who have taken the Tweed Study Course. William, Haiping and Jimmy have, of course, been instructors at the Tweed Study Course in Tucson so these gentlemen arranged for their colleagues in China to help with this effort. In conjunction with the Chinese Orthodontic Society Meeting, there was a special meeting of all former Tweed Course participants and people who were interested in the Tweed Study Course. As one can see from the enclosed photographs, it was an extremely large gathering. The Chinese experience and the Japanese experience were wonderful. They are testimony to the fact that the Tweed-Merrifield philosophy is alive and well in Asia. Drs. Klontz and Vaden are very appreciative to the people in Asia who made it possible for them to represent the Tweed Study Course and the Charles Tweed Foundation in that part of the world in the Fall of Scenes from the Chinese Tweed Meeting 4

5 Activities The Foundation has two activities planned for its membership for A mailing was sent in December about both of these activities. Please, if you have not done so, mark them on your calendars. The activities which are important for Tweed Foundation members are: Tweed Foundation reception at the AAO Meeting The Tweed Foundation will hold its annual reception in conjunction with the AAO Meeting. It will be held in the Lafayette/ Farragut Room at the Grand Hyatt, Washington on Friday evening, April 30, 2010 at 7:00 pm. We have sent a registration form for this reception to all Foundation members. Please complete the registration form and send it to the Secretary/ Treasurer. You will see many educators from around the world at this reception, and you will see many of your friends who are active in the Charles Tweed Foundation. It s a wonderful time that we can all spend together. Your attendance is an absolute must if you plan to attend the AAO Meeting in Washington DC. 28th Biennial Meeting The 28th Biennial Meeting of the Charles Tweed International Foundation will be held October 22 25, 2010 at the Westin La Paloma Hotel in Tucson, AZ. As you know, the Foundation will meet in Tucson at the La Paloma for the next three biennial meetings the 28th, 29th and the 30th. The Board of Directors decided to take this action in order to make it easier and less expensive for members to attend the meeting. There are many, many things to do in Tucson; it is our home. Our Program Chairman, Ken Rowan, is working very hard on the program for this meeting. Jim Ferguson, the President, is arranging a very nice, but very reasonably priced social venue. We will have a heavy hors d oeuvres mixer at the hotel on Friday night, October 22. Saturday night s function will be entitled, Mexican Fiesta Night and it will be held at the Foundation. It will give many who have not recently been to the Memorial Center an opportunity to visit and to enjoy the ambiance of this special place. On Sunday night, we will have the President s dinner at the La Paloma. It will be a grand affair with award presentations, dancing, and the normal, legendary Tweed comrardarie. All Foundation members are encouraged to bring clinical material. This is an important part of each meeting. Afternoons will be free to visit the model room. We want a great display of clinical material from around the world. We also hope that we will have at least 30 members who will present clinical material in order to become Fellows in the Charles Tweed International Foundation. So please, save the dates, October 22-25, 2010 and plan to be with us. We will have an excellent clinical program. It will be headlined by Jim Boley, the LL Merrifield lecturer and many of your friends and colleagues will participate. The model room will be the largest we ve had in many years. We can assure you that the social program will be spectacular. You will receive registration material for this meeting in early Summer We look forward to 2010 and hope that each member takes advantage of the opportunities presented by the Charles Tweed International Foundation Tweed Study Courses As of the writing of this newsletter, 134 students have registered for the April 2010 Tweed Study Course and 138 students have registered for the September 2010 course. This is absolutely amazing! As usual, the student registrations have come from all over the world. Dr. Klontz has assembled a great and large group of instructors for these courses. Just remember that the Tweed Study Course is the life-blood of the Charles Tweed Foundation. Without the course, and without people in each course who are interested in becoming members, our Foundation cannot exist. It is so very important that the Foundation support the Tweed Study Course because the Tweed Study Course certainly supports the Foundation. 5
