1 THE GROUP SCOOP The Al-Anon Information Services Newsletter September/October 2016 Upcoming Bridge Walk & Annual AIS Fundraiser! September is Recovery Month. A time for us to consider the state of our own recovery and to remember to make it our focus. However, in October there are opportunities to put your own recovery into practice with fellowship and activities with other Al-Anons! First you can support AIS website development by going on the Bridge Walk on Sunday, October 16th from 12:30 4:00PM. This is a great event for the whole family, you will be led by an experienced bridge guide, learn about and see several bridges, as well as tour the operator s tower and the bascule pit of the Morrison Bridge (see the flyer on page 3). The website has a great team of volunteers working hard to update it and to make it more user friendly. Your participation will give them the opportunity to continue this important and necessary work. Next on Saturday, October 29, from 5:30 9:00PM you can enjoy the annual AIS Fundraiser and speaker meeting. This is one of my favorite events of the year. Many AFG groups provide silent auction baskets, there are two fabulous speakers, an oral auction and plenty of fun and games. This is truly a wonderful way to build relationships with other people in Al-Anon and to have a good meal and tons of fun. See flyer on page 7. This is the annual fundraiser for the AIS offices which provide such amazing service to the greater Portland area. I have to mention that when my aunt was heading to South America and wanted to bring a relative Spanish language Al-Anon books, she asked me to get the books for her because the AIS in New York City was not as well stocked, nor did it have such convenient hours. While most Al -Anon literature is purchased by groups, individuals members are welcomed to visit the office and the selection of books and pamphlets is amazing. ~Beth McQ, Group Scoop Editor Service Concepts of the Month Concept Nine Good personal leadership at all service levels is a necessity. In the field of world service leadership the Board of Trustees assumes primary leadership. Concept Ten Service responsibility is balanced by carefully defined service authority and double-headed management is avoided. In This Issue: District Meetings, 7 Service Opportunities, 2, 8 Focus on Alateen, 6 Meetings & Events, 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 AIS office, 3, 5, 8 Oregon Area Assembly, 2, 7 Al-Anon Information Services Office, serving the Greater Portland Area The Group Scoop 1

6 Focus on Alateen Oregon Alateen Conference The Oregon Alateens held their fifth Oregon Alateen Conference (OAC) the first weekend in August. It is similar to the Oregon State Speakers meeting but for Alateens. It was a fun filled weekend of fellowship, friendships and recovery at the Molalla Retreat Center. About 51 teens and 10 AMIAS Sponsors attended. Some teens attended from as far away as California. OAC is an annual event and was a HUGE success this year. We had such a wonderful Oregon Alateen Conference that I wanted to get you their comments asap... Below are some of the comments from teens and Alateen sponsors: OAC really helped me connect to other victims of alcoholism in a way that I don t think I could in a regular Alateen meeting. I m so grateful that I got to come here and I m looking forward to more years here. Lacey F. I get from OAC what would take me a year in my home group. OAC reminds me of the strength, love and vast length of my family. Wherever I go, I carry these people for life. Francisco, Antioch, CA I appreciate the people who put OAC together, and made the scholarships possible for members who couldn t pay it all. I also want to thanks the people who were able to make this a safe place to talk. Kat Thank-you so much to everyone who made this possible and bringing all of us together like this! Ana <3 I m so happy to be here, I thank all the people who created OAC. I love you! Arri S. Thank-you for paying for members to come so they had the ability to feel all the love this weekend and hopefully they found hope too. Alexa Thank-you for donating money so that these wonderful people could have the opportunity to come to OAC. It is definitely one of the most memorable moments of my life. Amanda We are so lucky to have all the donations from Al-Anon and past fundraisers because 51 teens made it to OAC because of YOU! Fully Rely On God It WORKS!! Love, Cathy One teen from California shared that although he lived in California, that OAC would always have his heart! Friendships were made instantly and many will last a lifetime. Can't say it enough times, we are so grateful that you helped make this possible. Love in OAC Service, The OAC Committee The Group Scoop 6

8 12th Step Call Volunteers Needed The Al-Anon Information Services (AIS) Office is updating its Al-Anon 12 th Step Call list. Occasionally the AIS office receives an urgent call from someone in distress over someone else s drinking and needs to talk to someone right away. The office puts them in touch with an Al-Anon member who has been there, from the 12 th Step Call List. They do this by contacting a member on the list, asking them if they are willing to take a 12 th step call and gives them the newcomer s phone number. The office never gives out your number to the newcomer. The AIS Office has been using the same 12 th Step Call list for many years. Currently there are only 3 or 4 working telephone numbers left on the list. If you are willing to reach out to newcomers and you have at least one year in Al-Anon, we invite you to contact the AIS Office with the days and times you are available at 1750 S.W. Skyline Blvd. Suite 133, Portland, OR or at Thank you.
