2 a message from the chair: improving health and wellbeing Bike To The Future (BTTF) Since BTTF started in February 2017 we have worked with over 90 children and young people. All the children attend 4 sessions and learn basic bike maintenance and then leave with the bike they have been working on & a helmet, lock and lights, This project has helped children get active and cycling in a safer way. It has also improved concentration as we work in small groups. This project was the idea of a local man who wanted all children living in Scholemoor to have access to a bike. In February 2018 we introduced a cycling project for unemployed adults. We worked with a cycling tutor, helping participants get a free bike through the Sustrans project at Lister Park. This project helps get more adults cycling and allows them to consider jobs further away, the number of car owners living locally is lower than the national average. Having the large container on site with bikes and tools provides the perfect infrastructure to further develop cycling activities as a local hub. Pay As You Feel Cafe (PAYF) Welcome! I would like to thank the staff, volunteers, trainees and everyone who uses Scholemoor Beacon for their hard work and contributions during the last year. This report outlines the work we have been doing at Scholemoor Beacon over the last year. We would like to thank staff and volunteers for their dedication, which has increased the range of activities at the centre for children, young people and adults. Involvement of local people is paramount to the continued success of the centre and we seek to increase and strengthen this relationship in the coming year. We saw the final year of the NEST project that made a big impact on local children who struggled to get to school on time, needed a quiet space to do their homework and provided support to families. We were sad to see 4 valuable members of staff leave. We saw the ending of our Enterprise project which over the year gave local people some great hints and tips for taking their business ideas forward. With the ending of one project, a new project begin called Blooming Scholemoor to improve the site and give something back to local people. Alongside our successful Bike to the Future project we got some funding from City Connect to run an adult bike project. We re pleased to see that our profile has increased and that the staff and local residents are involved in initiatives that will impact on local people. These include Community Led Local Development and Greenmoor Big Local. The advice service continues and CHAS@St Vincent s provides this vital service to local people and the demand has been so high that they now come twice a week. The partnership with Big Swing goes from strength to strength and we have been working with parents, schools and other organisations to develop a play forum and continue to develop opportunities for play at Scholemoor. Ingrid Dzerins, Chair Well being Cafe The cafe goes from strength to strength providing a welcome treat for older people. It happens once a month with entertainment, dancing and cream cakes. Memphis Pete is a firm favourite and has got even the most reluctant dancer on to the floor. The cafe is a lifeline to older, isolated local people and helps with keeping older people fit and well. A social event and also an opportunity for people to have a hot meal, the PAYF cafe is reliant on local volunteers to prepare and cook the food. It provides an opportunity to learn new skills and get a food hygiene qualification. Food poverty, holiday hunger and loneliness are problems locally. Exercise Class There are 2 exercise classes a week for adults, one high impact aerobic and a seated exercise session for those who need it, some people come to both sessions. In addition we run a weekly market place where nutritious food can be purchased on a PAYF basis. We are linked into the district wide Feeding Bradford Initiative that is tackling Food Poverty. The classes boost fitness, flexibility and improve muscle tone. These classes have been successful in helping people to lose weight.

3 increasing the wealth of the local area bringing people together and making friends Enterprise Project Celebrations The idea of the enterprise project was to promote entrepreneurship and develop the business ideas of local people encouraging them to take the next step. This project brought the Pop Up Business School (PUBS) to Bradford the first time. It inspired a group 30 would-be entrepreneurs to follow their business passion. We mark many events and celebrations throughout the year. These are great for getting people together, sharing food & having fun. Over the year we ve had an Easter egg hunt, summer events, Eid parties, Xmas and Halloween parties. The celebrations are inclusive and we welcome all contributions; whether its food, tombola prizes, help in the kitchen or with running activities. The centre can be hired for people to hold their own parties and celebrations. Job Club The weekly job club continues with the support of Incommunities. Over the last year the job club coach has worked with 52 individuals and 14 have moved into paid work or volunteering. The people we are supporting can be a long way from paid work, and the approach we take increases self-confidence, identifies other needs and signposts to any other services required. We have been able to provide Talk-English classes for women to help improve their future job prospects. National Citizen Service (NCS) A group of young people came to the centre through NCS. They were developing their media skills and were here to make a promo film for Scholemoor Beacon. We had a planning session with the group where they found out about what we do and the direction to take for the video. Over the following 2 days they interviewed staff, users of the centre and filmed the facilities to create the film. This is our second time working with NCS. Volunteers Without volunteers a lot of what we do at Scholemoor Beacon would not happen. The value that they bring makes a huge difference to what we offer. We have volunteers who help keep the grounds clean and litter free, support the PAYF cafe by cooking and cleaning up, help run the Well being cafe and work in the office. Volunteers are always welcome whether it s a regular slot or one off supporting an event. This year the staff team cooked a 3 course meal for our volunteers to recognise and reward the contributions that they have made. Conversations With With the support of Bradford Council we have been running 2 youth sessions one at Scholemoor Beacon and the other at St John s Church at Great Horton. These sessions have been great at bringing young people together and in particular we have worked with a number of young people from Eastern Europe who have really enjoyed making music and have made good use of the guitars and drums. They also had a great visit to the School of Rock and Media. Benefit Advice Scholemoor Beacon hosts regular welfare benefit advice sessions for local residents provided by CHAS@StVincents. Through this work they have improved the situation for local people by ensuring that they are getting all the benefits they are entitled to. They have also helped people who have had their benefits stopped and have had to appeal decisions. Unfortunately there has been an increase in the number of people getting sanctioned and also the number of people getting into rent arrears. Universal Credit will be rolled out to all new claimants in June 2018, and we expect that more local people will struggle once more people are in receipt of Universal Credit. A Place of Welcome Providing a place of welcome and an opportunity to make friends is an important part of what we do at Scholemoor Beacon. We make sure that everyone who visits the centre is welcomed and that we get to know local people and support them if they want to make changes in their lives. We are always looking for local people to become trustees so they can be more involved in running the charity and ensure that it continues to benefit local people. Offering a listening ear, especially when people are in crisis is one of the most important aspects of the work that we do here.
