INFANTILE SPASMS AWARENESS IS AWARENESS WEEK 2016 AND BEYOND As a convenor of partners in care in the child neurology community, CNF s contribution to Infantile Spasms Awareness began by hosting the inaugural Infantile Spasms Advocacy Forum, where representatives from 5 membership bodies, 7 advocacy organizations, and 3 industry partners met to discuss how a collaborative initiative to raise IS awareness could contribute to improved outcomes for early and accurate diagnosis and treatment of this rare form of epilepsy. As a result: 16 national organizations came together as partners for ISAW 2016 a tiered-needs assessment was conducted to determine the accumulated resources available to advance IS awareness partners reconvened during ISAW at the AES meeting to discuss 2017 shared initiatives 2016 ISAW Partners The American Academy of Neurology The American Academy of Pediatrics The Child Neurology Society The Association of Child Neurology Nurses The American College of Emergency Physicians Additional ISAW Info The American Epilepsy Society CURE Danny Did Foundation Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome Foundation Global Genes Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance Seizure Tracker RARE Science Lundbeck Mallinckrodt Novartis ACHIEVEMENTS

2016 INFANTILE SPASMS HEROES AWARD DR. STEVEN COKER Dr. Coker was nominated by the Williams Family for his outstanding care of their son, Emmett. The fact that Dr. Coker has been in practice and treating IS for forty years is evident, as is his passion for doing so No matter what ends up happening with our Emmett, we know he is in the absolute best hands. Dr. Coker is truly our hero, and we feel that he couldn t be more deserving of this award ACHIEVEMENTS
CNF contributes to the need for Hope within the child neurology community by recognizing exemplary contributions to care. Since 2010, the IS Heroes Award has recognized a healthcare professional and his or her institution for making a positive difference in the life of a child with infantile spasms. Nominations are accepted from parents and caregivers who wish to acknowledge a provider who has embodied the heroic spirit of quality, compassionate, and efficacious care during diagnosis or treatment of IS. Many thanks to the Williams Family for sharing their story and taking the time to honor Dr. Coker and his staff! 11
BRENDAN MICHAEL HARNETT INFANTILE SPASMS MINI-GRANT Each year during ISAW, a $1,000 mini-grant is given to a child with IS to assist his or her caregivers to cover the cost of medical devices, treatments, and therapies not covered by insurance. 16 MEDICAL CANNABIS IN EPILEPSY CME SYMPOSIUM AT THE CHILD NEUROLOGY SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING In order to gain a deeper understanding of the current science, family experience and advocacy efforts, CNF convened thought leaders from clinical science and advocacy groups to discuss medical cannabis as a treatment for intractable epilepsy during its annual symposium at the 2016 CNS convention. The CME was attended by 240 child neurology professionals. Click the button below for more details about the CME Symposium CME Symposium Info Pre-CME Surveys of Providers and Caregivers to Understand the Treatment Chasm Survey to Child Neurology Society members received 167 responses. The survey to parents and caregivers identified through several advocacy groups received 479 responses. CNF asserts the critical value of child neurology professionals and parents working as partners in the delivery of quality care to every child. Unto that end, all of our educational modalities are interdisciplinary and bring these three stakeholder groups together to educate one another. We believe this is a vital contribution to the child neurology community, as it addresses the chasm often existing between these groups in regards to key issues, such as treatment options, services and goals of care ACHIEVEMENTS
After attending the symposium, over 50% of attendees reported they have an improved ability to: Explain the differences between medical cannabis, CBD, marijuana, and hemp to patients and/or colleagues Explain the current state of science, research, and clinical trials related to medical cannabis Communicate with patient families to openly communicate about their decision to treat their child with medical cannabis ATTENDEES HAD THIS TO SAY ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM After attending CNF s symposium, I am certainly more equipped to speak intelligently on the matter of medical cannabis, and can offer better counseling to patients. Very informative, but also motivating. Seamless blend of data and personal testimony. Very engaging. Hot topic; so great to hear from experts and families. 15
