1 NEVADA PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSSOCIATION Annual Business Meeting and Awards Presentation 3/27/09 Attending: Laurie Drucker, President; Staci Ross, President Elect; Judy Phoenix, Website chair; Shera Bradley, Treasurer; Leanne Earnest, Secretary; Abraham Amaya, Diversity Chair; Luis Guevara, APA Council, Lisa Linning, Southern President; Erin Oksol, Northern President; Lindsey Ricciardi, Southern Treasurer The meeting was called to order at 12:15 by President, Laurie Drucker who offered welcoming remarks and introduced the attending Board members and our new ED, Jan Porter NPA Accomplishments NPA accomplishments were shared with members. They included expanded membership and more very successful continuing education events which largely drew on local talent. Topics included ethics, disorders of childhood, school refusal, parent training and an MMPI workshop. Our new and improved website was successfully launched after a year of intensive planning and development by our President, Laurie Drucker and former Executive Director, Judy Phoenix. Our new Executive Director, Jan Porter is now on board and brings much needed marketing experience. Upcoming continuing education events are laid out for the coming year and include DBT training, ACT training, Positive Psychology and Forgiveness, Ethics and a workshop on the Personality Assessment Inventory. The Training Consortium Committee led by Past President, Michelle Carro and Marty Gutride developed by-laws and an affiliation agreement. On the legislative front, NPA was largely influential in the retention of eight psychology positions in rural Nevada thanks to the well timed testimony of our president, Laurie Drucker. We had another successful year using our limited resources to strategically support legislators who are invested in high quality mental health services in Nevada. The Business of Practice Network, led by Marty Gutride, selected another national winner, the Nevada Cancer Institute, for the Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards. They were honored last week at the APA Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. Strategic Planning: The annual strategic planning meeting will take place tomorrow at the home of Gary Lenkeit. Conference attendees were encouraged to attend and help shape the direction of NPA in ways that are meaningful and represent the interests of NPA members. 1

2 Financial: Treasurer, Shera Bradley, summarized the past year s financial income and expenses (report attached). Ideas on ways to scale down expenses and boost revenues were discussed and included increasing membership, doing more e-news rather then postal sharing, having attendees print out their own conference materials and using the website to post classified ads. Training Consortium and the Legislative Committees: Past President, Michelle Carro, summarized the efforts of these committees. The Training Consortium was developed because of the shortage of APA approved internships in Nevada and was modeled after a program in Arizona. Tomorrow at strategic planning, a clinical emphasis and training model will be developed. Fifteen bills where introduced to the Legislature over the past several weeks that are of interest to psychologists and are being followed by the committee. They continue to follow the fate of the rural clinics. Also, a bill was introduced that would change psychology licensing laws for psychologists moving to Nevada. Record keeping guidelines are changing and have been proposed to include a provision where seven years after the close of treatment, psychologists would have to send notification to the last known address of former clients before destroying their records. On these measures and more, the committee has been actively soliciting input from members to generate well informed and representative responses. Southern Region: Lisa Linning, Southern President, shared the efforts of the southern board in trying to make NPA accessible in meaningful ways to all members. The board hosts three socials every year. For the past two years they have co-hosted a highly successful holiday party with the Psychiatric Association which has been a fundraiser for local charities. In addition, they have a spring barbecue and host a social in the fall to mingle and welcome new students and psychologists. The Early Career Psychology group meets every month at someone s home, has various presenters and a pot luck dinner. Northern Region: Erin Oksol, Northern President and President Elect, shared that they also have an Early Career Psychology group headed by Melanie Crawford. They have a student social every year and are continuing to develop relationships with the professors at UNR. This has yielded a successful collaboration on many continuing education events. Awards: Dr. Julie Beasley, child neuropsychologist in Las Vegas, was awarded the NPA Award for greatest contribution to the organization. She stepped forward this year to join the Mental Health Commission where she regularly advocates for mental health services. She is also a long time contributor to children with developmental disabilities. Dr. Michelle Carro was awarded the Mikawa Award for most outstanding psychologist in the state of Nevada. Michelle has advocated tirelessly for psychology as the Past President of NPA, the UNLV Assistant Professor in Residence and 2

3 Associate Director of Clinical Training; as well as the chair of the Legislative Committee and Training Consortium Committee. Dr. Judy Phoenix received special recognition for the incredible outpouring of effort and devotion to the Nevada Psychological Association. Not only did she step up to be the Executive Director while serving as President of the organization, she has consistently worked 60 hours per week for the association while only being paid for 20. She is also the beloved mentor of many leaders in the field of psychology in Nevada today. She will be sorely missed as an officer of the Board and appreciated for her continued mentoring and NPA participation. The Board and members also recognized the sad passing of another long term friend and former president of the association, Dr. Robert Whittmore. Dr. Whittmore was another mentor in the field who held an abiding interest in the legislature. One member stated that, Robert knew everyone and was an unsurpassed master at being kind while packing a punch. Diversity: Abraham Amaya officially resigned his position as the Chair of the Diversity Committee. He is leaving for Idaho in a new job as faculty and fellow researcher for the University. There will be a vote on the new person to replace his position and he announced the front runner so far to be Jo Velasquez. DeVon Stokes will remain as the co-chair for the Northern region of the state. He stated that he will miss everyone and appreciated the opportunity to serve the board. Abraham also submitted the diversity statement for consideration to be added to the NPA mission statement.
