The shelter can house up to two families or eight individuals at one time. Staff help residents plan how to create a violence-free home for themselves and their children. Referrals are made to community agencies for help with financial assistance, housing and employment. When the shelter is full, alternate safe housing is sought at a shelter in a neighboring county or in a local motel. No one is turned away without resources and/or referrals being provided. Sheltered: 14 women/15 children 688 person nights/279 family nights Motel: 1 women/2 children 3 person nights/1 family night Shelter Requests Not Filled: 56 domestic violence* 59 homeless * In addition to New Directions being full, other reasons that domestic violence shelter requests are not filled include: the individual does not follow-through on their initial phone call to New Directions - either with a subsequent phone call or at a scheduled in-person appointment; the individual is seeking to relocate from another Ohio county or another state, and a different Ohio or state county shelter is geographically more accessible; and, housing offered by other agencies is better-suited to address their primary needs for example, drug and alcohol recovery.

6 DELTA FOCUS The purpose of the Delta FOCUS grant is to reach beyond programming with individuals to making changes within the community to change community norms (traditions and practices that shape or restrict the decisions, choices and behaviors of groups and communities) that support violence against women and girls. These norms have been shown through years of research to be community risk factors for perpetration of violence against women and girls. Community norms change means that the work of ending domestic violence and stalking, sexual violence, and teen dating violence must include the voices and ideas of community members, and that we all must own the issues, and that working together is necessary for sustainable and meaningful changes to support healthy, equitable, safe, and non-violent relationships and communities. 1. Teen Advisory Council (TAC): TAC is a group comprised of teens (14-18) across Knox County who want to take a stand and have a voice in ending sexual violence and teen dating violence. Youth gather once a month to plan activities within the community setting and at their schools to model and become Ambassadors of healthy relationship expectations. These teens commit to examining their own beliefs and learning new skills. 2. Delta Committee: The Delta Committee is a committed group of community members who want to make change in Knox County. Members commit to attending monthly meetings, exchange ideas, help mentor and cross-pollinate ideas with the Teen Advisory Council; and actively share ideas and knowledge gained from the Delta Committee work via their social, peer, and professional networks about primary prevention (stopping domestic violence and sexual assault before it happens). The Delta Committee supports the work of the Project Coordinator by helping her develop and plan the objectives and activities of the annual continuation grant, including updating activities of the Delta Committee; attending grant-related activities; and acting as liaisons within community power structures. 3. Working with Businesses: The Delta Committee identified that working with businesses, utilizing a bystander intervention model, would help spread the message of community involvement by safely speaking up and intervening to the precursors and signs of domestic violence amongst employees or patrons. The program chosen for this effort is called See The Signs: Speak Out and includes online or in-person training options (both free). To date, Sips Coffee House and Carpenter and Pressler Dentistry have taken the training. The idea is to saturate the county with the message. 4. Working with Young Men: By engaging men & boys as partners in teen dating and sexual violence prevention strategies, we will work with boys & men to increase their knowledge about risk & protective factors for perpetration of violence against women and the social norms that support those risk and protective factors. We continued with the Men of Strength Club (MoST) curriculum. Risk factors addressed include Harmful gender norms and norms supporting aggression. Equipped with this new learning, men & boys will be supported to engage in their circles of influence to challenge the risk factors when they see & hear them being endorsed and speak out in safe & effective ways. 5. Working with Coaches of Male Sports: Coaching Boys into Men (CBiM) is a methodology created by Futures without Violence. The idea is to work with coaches to integrate healthy relationships competencies (risk & protective factors) with youth on their athletic teams. This model builds on the strengths that coaches bring to young men s lives such as mentor, leader, and friend.
