Organizational Overview This information will be used during the Awards Ceremony for winning companies. Vision Statement Describe the philanthropic culture of the organization: In promoting a safe and diverse learning atmosphere, we at E.P. Pearce Elementary School strive to stimulate the whole child in a journey of learning. Mission Statement Our mission is to utilize the strengths of staff, families and community to challenge each student to surpass one year s growth while maximizing his/her academic, social and physical potential The E.P. Pearce Elementary community feels strongly in helping others, within and outside of the community. Our students, staff and parents are engaged in multiple giving and service learning projects throughout the year. Many of these opportunities are highlighted in Standard I of this application. Our Vision Statement includes the desire to strive to stimulate the whole child in a journey of learning. We believe that this also includes ensuring our students are learning in an environment that fosters care and concern for others, while building character.. Describe a successful strategy, engagement opportunity, or volunteer activity that ignited campaign success; moving the community to invest, volunteer, or advocate and create lasting impact. Our hallmark event was United Way Family Night on Friday, October 14 th from 5:30-8:00 pm at the school. The event included dinner cooked by staff (grilled hot dogs and hamburgers), family bingo, the school book fair and prize raffle with donated prizes from parents and the community. The event was an outstanding success with hundreds of students, staff and families participating in the exciting evening. The raffle and food sales resulted in nearly $7,500 raised through this one event. In addition, the book fair had a record number of sales and donations for the All for Books donation campaign. Family Bingo, was a free event for all participants and also included prizes for participating students.
Standard 1 Overall volunteer culture of the organization (this includes work with other community stakeholders, if applicable, as well as United Way). Describe how the organization works in collaboration with the community to solve problems. Does the organization have a social responsibility policy or statement? o If so, provide some highlights of the mission. Is the organization seen as a philanthropic leader and why? How does the organization benefit from being involved in serving the community? What % of are engaged in volunteer work? Does the organization have a volunteer policy? Up to 5 points E.P. Pearce Elementary has a tremendous culture of giving, including our annual United Way campaigns which have raised over $55,000 over the past 5 years. Our students and community are aware of the significant economic needs of greater Greensboro and beyond. In addition to the United Way campaign this year, our community has participated in collecting hundreds of toys for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. We also sponsor monthly grade level canned food drives to support the Out of the Garden Food Bank, a winter clothes drive which resulted in a collection and donation of over 100 pairs of gloves and mittens for Urban Ministries. In addition, our after school ACES program students collected, organized and donated 75 bags of personal care items to homeless veterans. During our United Way Family Night, hundreds of dollars were simultaneously collected in our book fair s All for Books campaign which provided free books to our own economically disadvantaged students at Pearce. In February, our school will also participate in the American Heart Association s Jump Rope for Heart campaign which typically raises several thousand dollars. The Pearce community has also been generous with their time. We encourage parents, volunteers and community members to participate in our school in a variety of capacities. Through these efforts to reach out to our community, Pearce has recorded over 2,699 volunteer hours in just the first 5 months of the school year.
Standard 2 Organization s partnership with United Way to raise community awareness of needs and foster a spirit of giving. Document ways in which the organization worked with United Way to generate enthusiasm for community involvement and support. o Specific rallies, events or programs o Unique awareness activities such as meetings, tours, speakers, and fairs. Comment on year-round engagement that exists, if applicable. Up to 5 points During the Kickoff Campaign, staff members presented at a faculty meeting, sharing how United Way has impacted their personal lives and/or work environment. The principal participated in the GCS campaign kickoff at the district level, and presented the district level and school level goals to the staff. Updated totals of campaign giving were shared through announcements. This year, one of our community partners donated a youth motorcycle for the raffle. The motorcycle was displayed in the school lobby, along with a sign indicating the other raffle prizes that participants could win during Family Night. This generated a tremendous response and interest in the event, which was an outstanding success.
Standard 3 - CEO/Senior Leadership and General Leadership Involvement & Giving Describe the role that senior leadership plays in influencing philanthropy, community support, and campaign activities How does the organization s leadership in general promote a culture of giving? List any specific events that are directed by the leadership team. Up to 5 points Guilford County Schools presented an inspiring program to principals at the start of the district campaign. Principals and other school leaders shared how United Way had impacted their lives personally. GCS has been a leader in institutional giving in North Carolina, and that success is a result of principals taking that enthusiasm back to their school communities. In addition, GCS supports principals giving their time and talent during the Summer of Service program, in which principals are encouraged to volunteer at least one day at a non-profit organization of their choice. This provides principals the opportunity to give back and see how their work benefits the community in other ways. Principals have provided service to organizations such as the Out of the Garden food bank, the animal shelter, local recreation centers, libraries among many others. Principals volunteer work is highlighted during district level meetings and events. Complete the chart below. Up to 5 points Any positive % change in leadership givers is awarded 2.5 points. 10% or greater increase in % of leadership givers receives an additional 2.5 points Use local corporate numbers if possible, otherwise indicate as statewide Year Total # of Givers # of Leadership Givers % of Leadership Givers % Change in Leadership Givers Points Awarded % +2.6% % UW % of Leadership Givers # of leadership givers divided by the 2016 total # of givers UW Leadership Givers % Change # of leadership givers minus the 2015 # of leadership givers divided by 2015 # Outline any factors or information that could affect % of leadership givers. School may not have as large of an income as some other professionals, but we are proud that 22 members of our staff donated at least $75 or more each to the employee campaign, including one at the leadership giving level.
Standard 4 - Corporate or Foundation Contributions and Non-traditional/In-kind Support State where management places the United Way Campaign within its prioritization of activities. List specific sponsorships, resources, materials, loaned executives, advertisements, videos (YouTube as an example). List specific social media activities/events/activities. Up to 5 points. If your organization is Federal or Nonprofit and cannot legally provide a Corporate Gift, please provide information on in-kind gifts and other efforts below. The Pearce community, including parents, the PTA and local businesses, has been tremendous in their support of the United Way Campaign. As a school, we don t provide a separate corporate gift, however we leverage the support of the community to make the overall campaign a success. Examples of this include: 1. A local food vending company donated 500 hot dogs and hamburgers for UW Family Night. 2. Flowers Bread Company donated the hot dog and hamburger buns. 3. The Pearce PTA donated the drinks and chips, a $250 gift card for raffle and Carolina Panthers tickets. 4. Kevin Powell Motorsports donated a motorcycle for our raffle. 5. Parents donated the prizes for the raffle baskets including gift cards, games, chocolate, etc. 6. Northwest Guilford High School (our feeder school) donated multiple summer athletic camp passes for the raffle. 7. Sedgefield Country Club donated a golf outing for All About Pets donated a raffle basket of pet supplies. 9. Our PTA provided volunteers for the book fair during Family Night and advertised the event through Facebook and other media. Local corporate numbers are reported below unless indicated as statewide Year Corporate Gift Percent Change 2016 $0 0% 2015 $0 Percentage change example: 2016 minus 2015 divided by Use a plus or minus sign to show a positive or negative % change.
Standard 5 Employee campaign coordination, recognition and incentive Describe the work of the campaign coordinator and/or committee, listing successful planning tools, specific activities, and events that propelled the campaign to success Detail how the were recognized within the workforce for their investment of time and resources Share any specific incentives used that proved to be effective in building motivation and resolve to give Up to 5 points Our United Way Campaign committee continues to provide invaluable support in the organization and promotion of the campaign. They met in the Spring of 2016 and continued to meet on a regular basis during the summer and fall. They reached out to donors, sponsors and staff to create an exciting atmosphere of giving for both students, parents and staff. The committee members efforts were recognized during staff meetings and other community communication, including PTA meetings and the weekly school newsletter. The campaign coordinators organized a contest of classrooms where the class with the highest total of raffle ticket sales were provided an ice cream party and recognized during morning announcements. Staff who contributed within the first few weeks of the employee campaign, were also entered into a drawing to win a restaurant gift card. The Family Night event was a tremendous success and would not have been had the committee not been able to garner the support of the faculty through volunteering, as well as encouraging monetary donations.
Standard 6 - Overall Per Capita Gift Describe events or strategic action that positively affected per capita employee giving Was a specific community issue at the center of employee giving? If so, explain. Up to 5 points While the percentage of providing direct donations dropped, the overall staff direct giving total was within $90 of last year s campaign due to increased individual giving percentages. On average, those who donated this year pledged significantly more than in the previous year. In addition, the percentage of participating in indirect giving remained extremely high. Most of the school staff participated extensively in the selling of raffle tickets to their friends and family (although 100 percent of the raffle ticket sales go to the United way, individual staff members don t get credit for their purchases or sales), donating their time to the event through cooking the food on the grill, serving food to our families, running the bingo games, supervising the raffle tables, volunteering throughout the building during the Family Night event, setting up and cleaning up after the event. Our staff provided an incredible community event that was fun, highlighted the contributions of the United Way to our community and had the direct result of raising a large donation for the United Way. Local corporate numbers are reported below unless indicated as statewide Year Total Employee Giving Amount % Change Points Awarded Total No. of Fulltime Employees Employee Per Capita % Change Points Awarded $ $ % 62 $ % 78 $46.78 Percentage change example: 2016 minus 2015 divided by Per Capita Gift: Total Employee giving Amount divided by the Total Number of Employees Use a plus or minus sign to show a positive or negative % change. 2.5 Points are awarded for positive percent change in Total Employee Giving Amount 2.5 Points are awarded for positive percent change in Employee Per Capita Amount Total possible points for Standard 6 = 10
Standard 7 Participation Level How does the organization ensure that all have an opportunity to participate in the United Way campaign? List specific steps taken to reach and educate all. Describe any efforts for outreach with specific groups such as new hires, seasonal, retirees. Up to 5 points All, including cafeteria staff, custodians, ACES (after school program) group leaders, teachers, assistants, office staff and administrators are invited to participate in the United Way Campaign. It was made clear that participating didn t just mean giving a financial donation, but ensuring the success of the Family Night activity on October 14th. All were invited and encouraged to participate in the Family Night activities as volunteers. A Sign Up Genius was used to provide opportunities for staff to volunteer in the area of their choice during the evening. A majority of the school s participated in the event through a combination of volunteerism, fundraising and direct giving. Pearce has been recognized each of the past several years for their support of the United Way and it is well promoted in our community and with our new hires. New have often heard of Pearce s commitment to the United Way, even before being hired.
