2 Introduction This is your guide to volunteering opportunities in London. Whether you want to volunteer at the same place every week, attend an NYU led weekend trip, or meet British students by volunteering with Students Union UCL, you can find the details in here! Community Service Award If you take part in 10 hours or more of community service (including trips, regular volunteering and things you ve found yourself) you will be eligible for our Community Service Award, signed by the Director, in recognition of your hard work and dedication: 10 hours + Bronze Award 15 hours + Silver Award 20 hours + Gold Award 35 hours + Platinum Award You can collect a log book to record your hours at the welcome fair, or in the Student Affairs office at any time. Please submit your completed log book by 5pm on Friday 7th December Most importantly... To have fun! 3

4 Wales Volunteering Weekender October 2018 Come volunteer in one of Britain s most scenic regions! We seek to recruit 46 volunteers to help Britain s National Trust control the growth of gorse bushes on the slopes of Mount Pen-y-Crug above the village of Brecon in the heart of one of Britain s most scenic regions. We aim to travel to Wales on Saturday stopping en-route to visit the Chepstow castle. We will then journey into the slopes of Waun Fach with wondrous views abound. We then stay overnight in the bunkhouse of Baskerville Hall near to Glasbury. This was the place where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle used to vacation. Our volunteering experience will begin early the next morning. We drive to Brecon where we will be met by member of the National Trust Organisation, given instruction into the cutting-back of gorse bushes and supervised during a period of work. If you are interested in the trip, come along to the signup session on Thursday 27th September at 12:15pm, Room LG02. 4

5 Calais trip with Help Refugees UK and NYU Paris October 2018 For the past three semesters, we have had a volunteering trip to Calais, France with Help Refugees UK, who run the aid distribution centre at the heart of the relief effort, providing support to refugees in the refugee camp in Dunkerque, as well as people displaced from the jungle camp in Calais. The trip will run again this semester in collaboration with NYU Paris. We will be staying in Calais overnight, with two full days volunteering at the Calais centre. 5

6 Regular Volunteering Our regular volunteering programme encompasses a number of opportunities to volunteer with partner organisations, who work closely with NYU London to provide a fulfilling experience for volunteers. Some opportunities do have limited spaces, but we will always do our best to give everyone who is interested the chance to take part. These options are open to all students, regardless of course or visa status. Some of them do require background checks, however: the SHINE Project requires a background check from your local US police authority. Action Tutoring require a UK check, but this will be handled by the charity themselves. If you have any questions about background check requirements or anything else regarding your options, please julia.thanh@nyu.edu. You get to have conversations with people you never usually interact with as a student... It s a really meaningful way to give back to a place that has given so much to me. 7 Action Tutoring Action Tutoring partner with elementary and high schools across London to deliver tutoring programmes in English and Maths to disadvantaged pupils preparing for their SATs (10-11yr olds) and GCSEs (15-16yr olds) respectively. Can you volunteer to commit to tutoring for just one hour a week, for roughly 8-10 weeks, at one of our many partner schools across London? All sessions take place in the school and you will be working directly with two pupils, in a wider group of other volunteers and pupils. 8 Student Action for Refugees STAR is the national charity welcoming refugees to the UK. Together they volunteer at local refugee projects, campaign to improve the lives of refugees, educate people about refugees and asylum and fundraise to welcome refugees. This is your chance to join 27,000 students at 46 universities and colleges and say Refugees Welcome Here by joining the new NYU STAR group. The London based STAR team will support you to get started, link you into the national STAR network, keep you updated with information about refugees and asylum, send you campaign actions and help you plan and organise events. Get involved You ll recieve an at the start of term where you will find out more information about joining the NYU London Star Group! STAR will also be at the Welcome Fair to answer any questions you may have. 8

9 Nurture Academy Nurture Academy is Social Enterprise company based in East London. They provide workshops, accredited courses and events for the local community. They deliver workshops and courses in Hairbraiding, Barbering, Futsal/Football and Jewellery Making all wrapped with a self development and mentoring to enable individuals to reach their full potential. They work with: Youth centres Ex-offenders Prisons Schools (Primary and Secondary) Salons Community Centres Foster Carers Volunteer Opportunities They are looking for Market and Sales Volunteer(s) to help out with creating a marketing campaign in line within Nurture Academy s vision. 10 Rhythms of Life Rhythms of Life is a registered homeless charity in central London which provides sustenance and support for those in need. They feed and provide toiletries, clothing and sleeping bags for up to 50 people everyday, 365 days a year. Nobody should have to sleep rough on the street, it s freezing, dangerous and miserable; but together we can make a difference. Volunteering Opportunities They are looking for volunteers to help them in two areas. The first is in daytime offices roles, including Admin, Fundraising and PR. The second area is distributing food to London s homeless, which is completed in the evening. If you are passionate about helping the homeless, have good communication skills, can work in a team and can commit for a time period of 2-3 months, they d love to hear from you. Not only would you really be making a difference, but it s also a great opportunity to develop valuable skills and be involved in the running of a charity. 11 Church Urban Fund Church Urban Fund is the Church of England s social action charity. It works to change lives and communities across England through three core programmes: Together Network: this network has grown through Church of England dioceses and works to extend the social action work of churches. Near Neighbours: this programme works to bring people together in some of England s most diverse communities to work together on projects to improve their local area. Just Finance Foundation: the Foundation works to make finance fair for all in England through a national network and work with primary schools. Volunteering Opportunities Social Media Volunteer A volunteer is needed to help our team extend our social media reach of CUF and its programmes. Appeals and Events Volunteer Volunteers are needed to help our team run our different appeals and events throughout the year. These include a range of events, which include our Big Pancake Party and The Big Sing. Supporter Care Volunteer Help us thank our supporters each week. 12 SHINE Tutoring Project The SHINE Tutoring Project involves going into a local primary school each week for 1-2 hours and assisting the teachers in giving the pupils the best possible learning experience. Sign up Most of the sign up has already taken place through the Letters from London, but if you want to get involved and have a recent (within 3 months) letter of good standing from your local police authority, you can the project coordinator, Dave Hopper, at david.hopper@live.com, to see if there are any places left. 12

13 Just Like Us JLU is a LGBT+ charity for young people. They are looking for inspirational LGBT+ students who want to transform the quality of life of LGBT+ kids growing up. Once you ve signed up to become a JLU Ambassador, you ll be trained to give talks in schools that champion LGBT+ equality and challenge prejudice. These talks will typically be 20 minute presentations in assemblies to groups of young people. Why get involved? Because growing LGBT+ up is still unacceptably tough: 9 in 10 hear homophobic remarks and 8 in 10 teachers have no training in LGBT+ issues. As a role model, you ll be trained to give talks and workshops that support LGBT+ pupils and empower straight students to champion LGBT+ equality. 14 Dragon s Hall Trust The Covent Garden Dragon Hall Trust was established in 2005 to provide a community facility in the heart of Covent Garden and Holborn to serve the needs of local residents, local communities and the wider public, with a specific focus on children, young people and older residents. They offer a wide range of social, educational and recreational activities and events delivered and developed in partnership with users and other organisations, to accommodate the needs and interests of our communities. Volunteering Opportunities They are looking for volunteers to support in a variety of ways; from chatting to their members and building friendships, help running activities and encourage and support older people to access services in the local area and improving their community connections. 15 One Housing Group One Housing Group are a housing developer who has social housing and they support vulnerable people in their services, they support adults and young people. They support people living with dementia, drug and alcohol abuse, mental health, young mothers, and the homeless. They aid their recovery and support them to access the wider community with self-confidence. Volunteering Opportunities They are looking for befrienders, mentors, people who would lead creative activities and help with their social inclusion ethos.
