The Delta Kappa Gamma Society Beta Beta Chapter Southern York County, Pennsylvania September, 2018 Volume 51 No. 1 President s Message This poem, author unknown, is such a true picture of what it means to educate a child! This is just what we do. Enjoy this time of the year as schools begin again and the power of Unity takes hold!
For behind the parents stood the school and behind the teacher stood the home! Amen Sisters! Our first meeting will be held at the Susan P. Byrnes Health Education Center at 515 South George Street starting promptly at 4:30 pm on September 18. Carol Hovis will present to us and a donation will be given to the Center. A business meeting will follow the presentation and the reflection will be done by the
Historical Records Committee (R. Schmidt, A.M. Carberry, L. Dick). Refreshments will be provided by two committees, Visual and Performing Arts (S. Chase, E.J. Hess), and Finance (E. Lawyer, N. Bentzel, P. Landis). Hope to see many sisters here! Your presidents, Kitty and Norina, have been busy looking for new ideas to enlighten our meetings a bit! Some changes are in store for you that we hope you will like. For instance, we will be spending some time on the innovative topic of mindfulness and for most of our meetings we will explore some Mindful Musical Messages in place of the reflections portion of our meetings. A few minutes of music will be played in which we can reflect on how the music and the messages in its lyrics speak to us. Also, we would like to spend some time celebrating us! Our members who were initiated in the month of our meeting will be acknowledged! Let s just say that September does have quite a few twenty-two to be exact. We will also play a York County, What s This? trivia game. One of our members will leave the meeting with a prize too! As we come together again in unity as sisters of Delta Kappa Gamma, Kitty and I look forward to seeing you on September 18 th! Basket Bonanza This year, we are going to try a new approach to raising money for our York College students who receive our grant-in-aid. At every meeting, we will be selling raffle tickets. At the end of each meeting, a ticket will be drawn, and one person will win the raffle basket. This will most likely not totally fund our grant-in-aid, but at least it will be a fun way to try fundraising. Tickets will be $1 each, or six tickets for $5. The first basket is called the ME, ME, ME, ME, ME basket. It is filled with items just for you (all perfectly G-rated). Don t forget to bring your dollars for raffle tickets. Maybe YOU will be the lucky winner at the first meeting you won t want to share this with anyone!
Teddy Bear Service Project For the past six years, we have given Beanie Babies to children brought into the emergency room at Memorial Hospital. While they were a huge hit with kids, it is time to move forward onto another service project. With increasingly more first responders having to deal with more incidents involving children, we decided to provide first responders with teddy bears to carry in their vehicles to use when their call involves children. By giving the bears to first responders, we can cover police, ambulance, and fire personnel. At each meeting, we will collect teddy bears. Once we have amassed a sizeable collection of teddies, we will donate them to local police/fire/ambulance stations. All teddies need to be new. We will also put them into individual bags for safekeeping. As much as we would like to reuse teddies we have on hand, for purposes of infection and allergy prevention, the teddies need to be new. Oriental Trading Company has 6 teddy bears for $19.95 a dozen. Perhaps several of you might want to go together to buy a dozen to donate to the cause. Amazon has a grouping of 8 teddy bears that are four for $10. With the holidays coming, there will probably be more stores locally that also have inexpensive child-safe teddy bears that can be donated. We look forward to your participation in this service project. It will bring comfort to local children during a trying situation in their lives. We Need Your Opinion Every year, fewer and fewer sisters participate in our fundraising efforts for the grant-in-aid monies that we give to students at York College and this is one of the most important projects in our chapter. While we still have ample funds in our checking account, we cannot continually draw it down or we will end up in the danger zone financially. Like most of you, selling something isn t on our burning list of things to do every year. So, we would like you to decide how you would like to fund the grant-in-aid program. Here are some suggestions for your consideration: Basket of Change Collection Penny War Between Committees Christmas Donation Tree Annual Giving Envelope at Our Birthday Meeting in May Three Month Donation Calendar
Asking Each Sister to Donate $20 to the Grant-in-Aid Bake-less Bake Sale Yard Sale at Someone s House Collection Banks Hold an Event (such as Bingo) Your Suggestion Please give some serious thought to a way that might entice you to help us fund the grant-in-aid project for this year. Your input is most important for us to discuss at the first meeting, so please come with your suggestions. Thanks so much! State Convention Raffle Basket Last year, our raffle basket for State Convention was filled with paper products for an entire year s worth of holidays. Our contribution helped the state earn $4,000. To help defray the cost of state convention. We will be asked to again contribute a raffle basket for convention this year. This year s basket will be hostess gifts. You know how you always need that little something when you go to someone s house? Well, this year our chapter is going to take care of that! There will be a sign-up sheet at the first two meetings asking several of your to go together to provide some type of hostess gift that can be included in our raffle basket. In this way, it s not so painful to get something for the basket. (Christmas Tree Shop is a treasure trove of inexpensive gift ideas that can be used. They have something for every occasion throughout the year. Five Below also has loads of items that can be used, as does Home Goods, At Home, T J Maxx, and Marshall s.) Please buddy up with a small group for this project and sign up at the September or October meeting. Dues It s time to pay your dues for Dues are $ Please make your check payable to Beta Beta. If you are attending the September 18 th meeting, please plan to pay your dues then.
